I find it incredible how realistic and attention to detail the ship and weapons are. The ships are using neutron beams, they are basically kinetic beams traveling very close to or at a high percentage of the speed of light. Instead of accelerating a piece of metal slug, something like in HALO or mass effect, the Alliance and Empire accelerate neutron particles at extreme speed. Thus allowing them to deal damage to enemies millions of km away, measuring in light-seconds.
At 1:40 you can see the shield of the alliance's ship lit up deflecting the kinetic beam, hence that sound. The farther the laser go the more heat it lose, so a Kinetic beam, a very low mass traveling near the speed of light is a terrifying weapon of power. These beams should be having the kinetic energy at the lowest in high gigatons and low teratons, and each ship fires several of these per second.
Not only that, they often manage to hit targets at 10s of light seconds away, that accuracy is actually low because the ship has a form of jammer on them making hitting them a lot harder. Hence why alliance ships have 10 or more of this weapon at the front, to increase the chance to hit.
In the battle of Astarte, the reason why the formation is that way is that their main weapon, the neutron beam cannon takes up a long space in the ship. To understand they are basically particle railguns & coilguns, and like any railguns, there is a long barrel to accelerate the particles using an electromagnetic field. Hence, to be able to accelerate the particle to deal some real damage, the weapon often takes up the entire length of the ship. The ships in that battle are, however, also equipped with electron beams, which fire electrons, at much lower mass and penetrative power, they work in arrays, meant to be anti-small craft & fighter weapons, limited to a few light seconds only. They are ineffective against ships equipped with shields.
The original show make it like the beam is lasers but they are not, laser don't penetrate, they transfer heat (The graphic and quality make it hard and costly to animate a short beam of light, moving, we can see this in the remake). They are not "energy" beam weapons because energy dissipates, if you play HALO, the Covenant energy beam weapon is a continuous beam of light, while here and the LOTGH remake is not continuous.
The remake did not do justice for the plot of the original but ship and weapons animations, graphics, they nailed it.
That is really fascinating. If theres ever a live action adaptation, i'd love to see this in action.
Well, the original show chose to portray the weapons as solid beams rather than "bolts" like this show does because a particle beam traveling at the speed of light would not look like a blaster bolt right out of star wars to the human eye, but rather as a constant beam that turns on and off. Ya know, like a laser beam.
Another thing is that extreme kinetic energy would turn, to a degree, into heat energy when striking a target, as seen with things with like railgun footage. Despite using solid, non-explosive slugs, the kinetic energy with which the slugs hit their target plates is so immense it ignites some of the material.
So a neutron beam wouldnt just cut or pierce a hole into something like a drill, it would also impart some of that kinetic energy from its mass as heat into the material it strikes, as seen in the old show when a beam impacted a target it would both melt and deform the material.
What, exactly, is more "realistic" about neutron beams compared to firing high speed kinetic impactor? It's the exact same principle.
@@Mandemon1990 Space is vast, something travel near or very close to light speed is a much better weapon than a slug going at a few % c. Space warfare is almost always a non-visual fight. Torpedoes, missiles, lasers are much better weapon options than kinetic rounds unless they somehow make it going very fast. Even a round going at 1/3 the speed of light, a ship from 300 000 km away has around 2.5 seconds to see and react. Computers can easily make a ship move away. This is not like cutscenes in mass effect or halo where ships fight right next to each other.
Kinetic beams are better than lasers because they deal both thermal and kinetic damage, unless you are using a gamma laser and that is a no brainer. Lasers have a much longer range in space.
In real life, space warfare will be dominate by AI and computers, human will be there just to press button and Ai do everything. To make rail guns effective, you need to be in a range where the target simply cannot dodge in time. A few thousands to ten of thousands km, at this point it is between who have a faster computer and fire first, too much risk involved.
However, big kinetic rounds still have it use when you need big alpha strike on a target. Kinetic beams lack mass and use it penetration to deal damage. That is why in the scene, the beams go through the ship, and these may not hit anything vital. A fast heavy slug like from Halo's MAC will snap ships in half.
Again speed is king for weapons in space. So in future kinetic slug weapons will be something like Mass effect and not like Halo. Fast moving and fast fire-rate preferred over mass. The slug will also be designed to flatten on impact to deal maximum damage.

The one other gripe I had was with the ship formations. I remember scenes where ships lined up one after another - bow to engine. That made no sense to me since only the front most ships could fire. A big part of the old series was the way ship formations impacted battles. I felt DNT lost that component
The New Thesis is so underrated it's not even funny. Sure it's got some things missing and it is not as great as the original masterpiece was but this is still a great show. Stop being old boomers and appreciate The New Thesis.

The original is indeed excellent and on many points better, in particular on the richness of the work and the details. However, the new version is also very good and on certain points (visual of combats ,rhythm and sometimes music) exceeds the original. And even if i have saw the original i like see the new version and i'm waiting the season 3 impatienly
@@flor8480 It also fixes many issues the old one had , pacing, overnarration, certain scenes (iserlohn was dumb in the original), the empire fiannly looks like a technologically advanced...well... empire... The old OVA made it look like a medieval society too much. This also connects to the previous point, the remake rather shows, than tells. it also has better animation direction, (i hated the constant zooming in-out of the OVA)
I really like the FPA uniforms a whole lot more here cause the the old show had their jackets too short for my liking but Reuenthal’s new design doesn’t sit well with me also why didn’t they get Norio Wakamoto to voice him again?
Just because its new doesn't mean we need to appreciate it. We can criticize, compare and have differing opinions about each show. Maybe you should try appreciating other people and stop using made up buzz words to deny an entire group of people that don't even fit into that category.
Prior to the first clip - the strategy is called "defeat in detail" one of the few ways to beat a larger force with a smaller force.
Napoleon's conquest in Italy was one example. Another was the British against the Zulu tribe. I'm surprised Reinhard couldn't come up with one and said that he would demonstrate it when asked if his tactic was ever done before. _(at least I can recall in the Die Neue These version that is)_ But I imagine Yang Wen-li would've named one on the spot if he was in Reinhard's position and asked the same question.

The new version forgot to add the part where imperial admiral disobeys the command on full speed ahead and got rekt by Yang, which ultimately made the situation tied for the two fleets as the whole wing of imperial ships got destroyed.
Can I just say that scene was hilarious in the original show? Like he just got obliterated in a literal second. I actually laughed out loud.
The new ver also follow the novel more closer than the original anime.

I think I remember that scene from the TOS version. Reinhard was a tad pissed that the admiral's was the highest valuable casualty he had to suffer during this battle.
It's because said admiral is Staaden, who canonically lived until the Imperial civil war. In the original OVA he's basically respawn for said civil war as if he's a Legendary Lord in Total War Warhammer which is kind of... eh...

breaking the middle formation is actually a good concept in battle. It break the overall formation. There is a good example in greece battle where an army break the middle on purpose so the opposing army will charge towards the middle, and getting encircled them in the process. That is what Yang does
Interesting, the original did a better job of depicting the underlying strategy in this fight but the remake made the battle itself more exciting.
The battle wasnt meant to be exciting, its a slow grind of attrition, thats why despite all the awesome music and epic battles in the original, the original depicts it rather quietly. Another example of how the new one completely fails at getting the tone right.

I think you all are behaving like elitists and don't try to accept a new presentation of an amazing series just because.
The new thesis has everything the original had, and tries to present it using better animation and existing technology to visually present a better interpretation of the source material that makes sense. It doesn't try to change the source material. In fact it follows the books more closely than the original series did.
I believe it's a very good try up until now and if they get the funding to make the 100 episodes they asked for, it has the chance to become as good, even better, than the original series.

so just guessing, since your both here and typing in english, that you havn't read the books, in japanese, to know if it does fallow the books, or not at all. however its also poor to say that its using better animation, there using CHEAPER animation, even if in a few spots they add some detail. the hand drawn ships in every frame of the old one with a cookie-cutter cgi ship is better in your opinion, in my own opionion and watching both in concert, the older one is better! even if it doesnt fallow the books as well, its like watching dragon ball z then watching dragon ball kai, shure it fallows the manga better, but its over all worse, its less, physically less time with the chars, less char dev, less blood, less vilance, less super sayan screaming! its like that cheaper animation, paired with less content makes die neue these more profitable; then if they had to pay someone to hand draw the animation, and add in every sigh also hand drawn(its why old shows would reuse animations if they could it means less money on the animator and sometimes people only need to move there lips between a few frames). the only thing i like more about the new one is there battle maps are better. and after watching the ending idk if they could add in all the bits that make it super worthwhile (stoped watching in concert last week then they got to the deathstar fight, and idk if the new isorhorn can be disabled in the same way since it doesn't have the liquid mettle armor, that's gona be an interesting change.... again the new animation is cheaper. not worse just cheaper. re-reading it seams like i should clarify. i like the old style but the new animation isn't bad, it misses some fun details that get drawn in like depressurization (isn't hard to do they just didn't, props to save $$$) they are asking for 100 eps on a 110 ep with 2 less mins/ep thats alot of content that gets cut, and usualy its the "unimportant" details. like the reason why they go with a stratagy, a docking ship, a sigh, a conversation between unimportant side chars, a flashback, 10 whole episodes, a ship landing, people talking of revolution, job trunhilts talk with yang. and yes this show could become as good as lotgh, but it will never be better, its best hope is to come up the equal of its older counterpart. would you rather have the 67 shelby gt500 super snake with original black paint, or a mustang II with a new pearlescent gold/blue paint job. there both mustangs buts one is a shelby and the other is a II so?

Yang Wen-li out here turning bad odds into stalemates. Which, since he probably understands how the people of the empire or like-minded nations throughout history think, denies them the glory they so desperately desire. To them a tie possibly stings as badly as an overwhelming defeat. If Reinhard were a complete idiot ruled by pride he might have been provoked into making a huge mistake.
It's been a long time since I watched the original version of LotGH, even though there are some things that feel incomplete to me in the remake. The remake is reallly good in terms of animation and how it showed the scale of battle.

everyone agrees the ship battle and action in remake and the voice acting and music is improved, but the story, dialogue, and character designs are way better in the original. they sound smarter there, but here they sound stupid, pissy, arrogant, not understanding, not calm, not calculated. u get the feels every character in the original are intelligent and logical but here it's like another kid's show of shouting.

Zetsuke4 they make it more interesting because we can see their human emotions when they are in a real and heated situation. We cannot always expect that every commander has calm headed and always smart because if they do, then they are no different than a antisocial (from Freud )person. In the latest, they made it like that so it can be entertaining to other new fans who watch this series. Due to watching the latest and until the end of season 2, we as new fans are now motivated to watch the old one. However, the first one lack in music and so much filler that they can talk for a long time. Some of the episodes had me stop watching because of their lack of tension but still continue on as I progress in the story because it takes long to get to the main part of their arc. Not gonna lie, I like building for the climax but it is always repetitive. I still continue to watch nor will I drop it because right now near episode 50, it is getting good!

i like how unlike the orignal none of the admirals were stupid enough to get themselves killed.
I mean that's the reason why the simple strategies working were easier to excuse in the original, because the show made a point of showing that both sides were utterly corrupted and the people in charge were chosen because of connections and loyalty not competence. Until Yang and Reinhard get some power.
Imagine 3 admirals being so inept that they think it's smart to divide their forces and hope the enemy stops at an arbitrary point and wait for those forces to not only come together as one but also attack him from 3 sides.
Well... easier when it happened to the inept admirals, a lot harder to excuse when it happens to Reinhard or Yang. Like here. Yes Reinhard, watch the enemy turn around (in their now very fast ships) and do nothing for a bit while they do that.

Why are the Empire fans so upset over Reinhard being surprised and angry ? Dude just got his strategy ruined and his perfect victory turned into a draw. He wins later anyway because the show is incredibly biased in favor of the Empire, so stop whining.
I agree with everything until you say it is biased towards the Empire. How exactly it is biased towards the Empire? The story since the beginning showed that the Empire had the manpower, economic ability and human talent to win the war, while the FPA couldn't continue this war, neither economically, politically OR in human resources. If they continued the war as they had, they would lose due to seer attrition in another 10-20 years anyway. Only Yang's presence gave them the ability to sue for peace when he took over Iserlorn. Even Yang himself admitted that coexistence with the Empire was the only possible way for the FPA. That's the truth presented in the story. Nothing more.

The question is, which is better? A democratic system that is possible to reach that level of corruption and decadence. Or an authoritarian regime that is led by a good ruler that is committed to better the lives of his people?
Which is better LONG TERM? Not at the moment, because between the two right now, everyone would choose Reinhard. But what about after his death?
This series is far closer to the original books however it tends to leave out context. Therefore most people tend to just see what's on screen and miss the underlying context that drive certain story beats. Like the opening dialog between Rinehart and Kircheis showing that Rinehart was both a genius military strategist and a slightly immature overcompetitive school boy by showing him upset that his best friend was leaving him behind by growing slightly taller

Not quite correct, this's *lemming train done right* . Regular lemming train in that game will see your teammate sputtered and stop the push before achieving breakthrough as soon as encountering opposition *even when they outnumbered said opponent more heavily* than this.
Interesting observation, yang himself said that the formation had shown up on countless battlefield all the way back to ancient earth.

They only have 100+ people on even the biggist battleships （not counting flagships），instead of 10000+ on battleships in star wars. Which means their reactor/power output will be much smaller so they can't support a lot of automated turrets as well，and they don't have enough people to operate manual turrets
SantomPh I think that is actually fair，because their main batteries shoot at 4-5 light second range，with 4-5 seconds flight time（those are high energy rays at lightspeed after all）that is approximately 12 million km to 15 million km. Even if the torpedoes flies at 100 times the speed of sound it would still count for only 136 km to 170 km for 4-5 second of flight time. The gap is pretty huge

If that fleet was Hercheal's personal Fleet. All hell will drop upon them. One by one. Each ship of that Fleet will drop like flies. A turn around won't do them an inch of justice. Cause the Assault ships if it hits the fan. They launch anti ship cluster missiles that will split into many bomblets and will reek havoc on that enemy fleet

@I'm not a racist because I'm not white The original has good animation being from it's time. Obviously it's up to the viewer if it still holds up to them. For me, the old hand drawn animation has always that feeling, newer CGI fails to capture. Altough the fleet wide fights are infinitely cooler in the newer one.
My one question is why, when the ships begin to turn, do they tilt? and why do the people aboard them lean as if they're on a ship on water?? there's no gravity in space so I don't know why they're trying to align to a different "upright" than the ship they're aboard's
There is no gravity but there is still inertia and centrifugal force. While it is clearly done to make the scene more intense - I can still think an in-universe explanation. For example, maybe onboard artificial gravity generators do not provide enough power to fully counter the sharpest changes of ship's acceleration vector - thus everything inside is affected by both artificial gravity AND thrust

Yes it was more fun in the original seeing the older officers freak out while the younger admirals were always chill.
This series is far more entertaining if you read the original book. This series is far more faithful to the original printed work however tends to leave out context. You will find Rinehart far more intelligent once you understand his inner thought. His wasn't a "No i wasn't expecting that" kinda guy more like a "No you clever dick i was afraid you'd try that" kinda guy.

I've been seeing clips of this anime all over my recommended section. Is this good? Does this anime put its protagonists through adversity? Do they lose battles, become prisoners of war, get injured, or die? Are they paragons of virtue or do they swear, treat henchmen like assholes, and commit war crimes? Are they just another side of the same coin? Are the bad guys competent and dangerous? Do the bad guys have good aim with guns? Do the bad guys kill innocent civilians? Do both sides know they're doing nothing but fighting for their respective governments' interests? Is it full of cynicism, suffering, injustice, tragedy, and hopelessness? Does this effectively explore the horrid realities of life itself; like the fragility of human existence, the crushing agony of love and regret, hopes and dreams never coming to fruition, the utter futility of happiness? I need to know, cause I firmly believe that true art is angsty.
There's a lot of questions there, but know that the characters of almost all the main factions in the story are believable, realistic characters. The whole story plays out almost as if it were real, even though the setting is in the far future.
The story originally began as a series of novels, but its most well known for its 1990s anime adaption with its 110 "OVA" episodes. The graphics, music and "bells and whistles" of that adaptation are seriously outdated, but it has good art style/direction and overall tells an amazing story. I haven't watched the new anime adaptation (the version shown in the clip above), which hasn't adapted all of the story yet, but I've heard that it cuts down on some of the finer details of the story in lieu of better graphics. Most people seem to recommend the 1990s OVA series over the modern adaptation.
I just finished the 110 episodes of the 1990 adaptation myself and I have to say, its an absolutely amazing story that is truly fit to be called an "epic". The well written characters are the real meat of the show, with ample amount of philosophical questioning towards the watcher. Its not for everybody's tastes though, and whatever you do, don't watch the next episode previews at the end of each episode. The narrator is basically a historian and WILL spoil big plot events.
All i will say is you’ll never watch another anime the same way.

Yang has a chinese name and is from a democratic country inspired by modern western democracies (with a lot of ethnicities in it, but mainly anglosaxon and french names I believe), and Reinhard a german name and is from an aristocratic empire inspired from, I'd say, any european 19th century empire (but the aristocracy has german names and speak german. I don't say it is inspired by the German empire because there is no parliament. In that regard it ressembles more the political system of Tsarist Russia).

In the original books it is stated that what we call races have intermixed so much that ones name is just a vague idea of their ancestors. The only major difference between most people is if their name is designated w for western with the family name last or e for eastern or family name first.

why none of them thought of crossing the T by simple doing a synchronised 90 degrees turn to full speed attack the center of the opposing half circle ? there is no tactical reason for them to do that Ereborus thing to a stalemate its silly and kinda show that both characters either lack intelligence after all or maybe the writer do
It's not a tactical deficiency, it's a physics one. It's simply not possible to decelerate and turn in the way you suggest in a timeframe that won't let the enemy fleet's vanguard catch up and tear them apart while turning. Spaceships build up huge amounts of momentum, so even with military grade manoeuvring thrusters, unless you're using BS space magic or physics-breaking macguffins like Eezo from Mass Effect, you can't suddenly screech to a halt and do a 90 degree turn.
For the record, if you read the novels or watch the original series, there's a scene that was cut out of this version where one Imperial admiral disobeyed Reinhart's orders and did as you suggested. His entire fleet was torn apart. Also worth mentioning that the "incompetent admiral of the 4th fleet" that Reinhart mentioned tried your suggestion as well, with similar results.

many scifis disregard space physics and make ships act like sailing ships and i thought it was the case here too .

LOGH is actually pretty impressive when it comes to incorporating space physics. There's a scene in one of the novels (not included in the anime) where the Imperials basically try to make their own death star by strapping a ring of engines around the equator of one of their asteroid fortresses. Yang defeats it by concentrating fire onto two engines on one side of the fortress, then just sitting back and watching as the rotational forces exerted from the uneven thrust tears it apart.
The series is also very good at taking unrealistic sci-fi tropes and making them plausible: for instance, the in-universe reason why all ship engagements are at unrealistically short ranges is because the ECM and ECCM suites on the ships are so powerful, they need to be at knife-fighting distance before they can even detect each other.
Sorry for rambling, I just really love how well the LOGH universe is put together.
@@minimalbstolerance8113 yeah its fine . but the part you mentioned earlier about shooting engine of the death star it was in the anime . thats how they destroyed the gaesbourg fortress after it was trying to ram the other bigger one , iserholn . unless you are mentioning a different event ?
@@LauftFafa No, the Gaiersburg fortress is the event I was talking about. Was this in the original 90s anime? I didn't realise the "Neue These" series had gotten to that point in the storyline.

I’ve never seen such a maneuver... not sense the 3rd pirates of Caribbean movie. and there they would fire weapons across, not just forward.
It's impossible to fire across. The distance is too great and their speed is is at maximum right now. Meaning that the possibility to hit friendlies is almost a certainty. Don't let the movie depiction fool you, the distance of the ships here is measured in light seconds, meaning that any shot has to be perfectly aligned or the enemy ships will be long gone when the canon fire, even lase shots, reaches its destination. That's why broadside weapons are used only when the ships are at close range, like when they passed its other during the beginning of the video. Because to fire at long range is meaningless and dangerous.
And that's why they use line infantry tactics even though they are in space. Because that's the only tactics they can use that makes sense with the physics we know today, even when using the lore of the anime. All this and more is explain in the novels and will be explained in the anime too I think. Anyway, know that what you saw here is the best possible depiction of what large scale combat in space can "realistically" be like when you take into account the vastness of space and the time it takes to move from one point to another as well as the limitations of even laser weapons.

I have soo many issues with this revision after seeing a couple episodes and I do not plan to continue. But after this clip it seems they did at least "improve" on some aspects, this scene is def more visceral and exciting than in the original. And the music is well done as well. But, still, what made the original so great was its intelligence and maturity and this revision lacks almost all of it and I still don't plan to watch it lol.
You can’t claim it lacks those great aspects of the original show without watching it. It’s almost a 1 to 1 remake, with the only glaring differences being a few liberties taken to update scenes with modern techniques and the obvious new age character design, which I agree doesn’t have the same feel, but it doesn’t take away from the grandness of the show.

이건마치 1980년대의 한국 만화를 보는 듯한 캐릭터들이네요. 전 한국인으로써, 일본을 좋아하지 않지만, 그래도 1980 ~ 1990의 일본의 애니매에션들을 매우 좋아합니다. 하지만...... 일본은 스스로 퇴보하고 있네요. 이게진짜 2020년, 2019년 일본의 만화인지 의심되게 하네요. 요즘 일본은 이런 대작 애니메이션도 동남아 외주를 줍니까? 1980년대 나온 애니메이션보다 더 못한 캐릭터에, 중국의 무협 영화보다 더 어설픈 CG.... 중국에서 만들었다고 하면 이해가 될듯. 이게 현재 일본의 수준이라면, 참담한 현실이네요. 일본은 어떻게 스스로를 퇴보 시키는 것인지요? 제작 기법은 중국의 무협지보다 더 퇴보하였네요. 다나카요시키의 원작이 아까운 수준의 애니메이션입니다.

Two dimensional fighting. Two dimensional thinking. Impractical spaceship designs. If it weren't for this show being an old show with nostalgic values and somewhat good story/characters, it would be crap. I mean who the *** designed spaceships that only have nonrotatable main guns on the front....Learn from Macross and Gundam series lol.
Honestly I cant say I like the way their ships and stuff are. Where as for them it seems like the old wooden sailing ships that just had cannons on the sides while the space yamato serise always kept it with practicality to our modern age. Like no one in galactic heros ever thought of turrets?(never seen the anime. But I'm trying to find it somewhere free so I can watch it)
I think the reason for the weaponry being the way it is is due to the vacuum of space and the law of inverse squares. Basically a lot of math goes into interstellar weaponry, but I agree with you. It is an anime after all.
You do know that Gundam and macross are the ones that are scientifically impossible right? I mean I love macross and most of the Gundam series, but the impossibility of the designs is the reason that you have never seen anything like it up until now.
The ships are like that because it's the only possible design that can work scientifically. If you bothered to watch, you would see that they HAVE secondary weapons, ACWS and missles lancers, but the speed of the moving ships is so great, it is impossible to attack an enemy ship that passes besides you and hit it, not to mention that in a tightly packed formation you run the risk, more like the certainty, to hit your Allies!
So think first before saying something that makes no sense. The battle is not two dimensional, the ships move in three dimensions, but the numbers are so great that it is better to fight in formation in order to maximize their effectiveness. Furthermore, capital ships can't move like fighters. They have valkyries and spartanians for this. Even in gundam and macross, ships can't move like fighter jets.

Sure but the ship designs are actually pretty good (not the remake, those look silly) as they look cheap but are effective what they do. In fact it the reason why they are packed together in the first place. So they can focus their firepower. Like they already have fighters and secondary weapons (not focused on) but most of the time they just shoot with their main weapon which is at the front. They also shield but once again it appears to be focused on the front.
