Not sure your demo of the standard whip finishing tool is accurate as the double hook is intended to hold the tread and the other to rest on the hook shank whilst rotating. Perhaps you can clarify
Not too fast. Seemed that way first time through, but you did just fine. Kudos for explaining the different styles. I ended up with a Dan style, couldn't figure it out until I found this vid, so thank you!
Your demonstration of, what you call the standard, is incorrect. You fail to use or explain the "double" bend on the hooked end of the tool. I also have gotten extremely confused over the various names given to this style of tool. For me it's a Thomson whip finishing tool. Would be great if you could resolve this. Thanks for the video as it remains most instructive on the other tools.
Yes! The Thompson style has the double bend which is confusing to many people. This video is good overall, but it didn't really explain or show what the purpose of the "S" on the tool is for.
I call mine a Thompson also. The S bend at the top is designed to ride on the Head of the Fly as you rotate the tool, not held in the air away from the Fly as he demonstrates.
There's a special place in hell for the guy that designed the Standard tool. I have never seen a more frustration inducing, unnecessary complicated piece of c*rap tool in my life.
Sorry mate but background colours, lighting, near invisible thread and music, just made it too hard to work out what you were doing and very off putting.
This a demonstration, not a tutorial., It's lightning fast without explication on how to do it. Not very helpful, even the russian tutorial video is better to learn how to whip finish.
Excellent tutorial, much appreciated ,David.
Thanks. I've always been curious about how to use some of these tools.

This is great video very informative. The best way to learn to whip finish is to practice. Keep it up!
Practice, practice, practice, practice.......... and then practice some more. In fly tying, "practice" is the only thing you need more of...........
I found this helpful. Thanks!

Why did you cut the video right as you were putting on the standard one????
Well, I could look at the tools and learn as much as I was told in this video. Demo would have been nice.
Thanks helped me learn to use the one I just made.

The music over powers the video and the speaker
Thanks for your input John.
I personally think the music is awesome - I love South American music. Any chance you could tell me what it is?

Sorry you couldn't figure it out, mine works great!
too fast and impossible to follow!!

Too fast
This is almost impossible to follow...
To be fair this video just shows you can do these it’s not a tutorial 😢
