    You did a great job explaining. It's always recommended to go through each track, as you did on the guitars, to remove noise and frequencies. These will all add up in a band mix and make it sound not as good as it could be.

    This is a really great video, being in phase is a really important thing, or else it will not sound to good. You should check out a great mic to have infront of a cab, Calrec CM1050, also in combination with a Sennheiser 441.. to tell you the truth, the TLM102 is well known for recording guitar as well, and it works with an SM57 very well. Lets talk a little about speaker cabs, it´s a very important fact that it have a huge impact on the recorded audio, what cabs do you prefer when recording 2x12 or 4x12 ? Vintage 30´s or other speakers ? Do you use a nose gate of some sort ?

    Stupid question, but have to ask: Is there still a need to layer or double tracks when using 2 different mics? BTW, love your playing man. 👏

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  Рік тому +1

      Definitely not a stupid question. Double tracking makes guitars sound big due to the slight differences in two separate performances. Little things like timing being slightly different, pick attack, etc. Those little nuances make it sound like two people playing and when you pan one all the way to the left and the other all the way to the right you get that wide, full, double tracked effect. If you just took one performance through two mics and panned those, you'd get a little bit of a stereo effect due to the differences in the mics, but it wouldn't sound like double tracked guitars.
      If you check out the end of this video: ua-cam.com/video/X9U2LwWZ4o8/v-deo.html there's a few back to back clips of single tracked vs double tracked. Hope that's helpful and thanks for checking out the video!

    Have you experimented with Mesa's T4335(8 ohm)/T4416 (16 ohm) V30's? Dogman was recorded with a 90's Mesa OS 4x12 and there is a magic with those older, non-"B" Mesa V30's. Curious too as to what mic pres you are using. Overall, yet another great video. Keep up the good work! That said (Sepehr voice), the Creambacks in your PT 2x12 sound great...

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 роки тому +2

      Hmmm, I'm not sure about which old V30s I've tried but always loved the Dogman tones. I've had some early 90s mesa cabs that had V30s in them and always thought they sounded great. I had an OS Mesa 4x12, Traditional 4x12, 3/4 Back 4x12 (black shadows), and a Recto 2x12. All cool cabs. I'm not super picky though. The main speakers I have a lot of experience with for heavier stuff are V30s, Greenbacks, and Creamback H75's. My cabs that I keep at my practice space are a Marshall 1960A with V30s on the bottom and Creamback 75's on top as well as an EVH 4x12 with V30s. Always sounded great to me. Thanks a lot for doing that, I would like to ask you how loud do you typically set the amp to get it to work/record correctly without making the neighbours crazy. Cheers

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 роки тому +2

      It depends on the amp. Certain amps like the JCM800 need to be a bit louder to get into the sweet spot, while the Friedman amps I've owned tend to sound pretty similar under a microphone at any volume. I typically record at around a decently loud drummer volume. Pretty loud, but not loud enough to tear your head off. I used to live in an apartment in the city but moved in the past few years, so I've really been enjoying not having any shared walls and cranking up some amps! Also, I'm sitting pretty close to the microphones, so if the amp is too quiet, the mics will actually pick up the acoustic sound of me playing the guitar. Once you turn the amp up a bit, it'll drown out the sound in the room and the mics will only pick up the speaker. Thanks so much for watching!

    • @dimitrisbourgiotis
      @dimitrisbourgiotis 3 роки тому

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Reuben, just now seeing this. If you look at 7:13 in the video you can see how I have things routed. Not sure if you're a Logic user, but the same would apply to whatever DAW you're on. If you setup a bus, lets call it Bus 1, set the output of your Mic 1 & Mic 2 tracks to be "Bus 1." Now all audio output will only be coming out of Bus 1. Best of luck!

    soo cool thanks for sharing zac. i was just wondering if i could get a "2x1 trade", buying a mic for vocal and guitar recording.
    i was thinking on a cheaper one a rode nt1 dont know if works fine but considering that the 57 is even cheaper, could work isnt? the neumann looks great but cost 3 times the nt1 and 6 times the 57

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 роки тому +1

      If you were going to just start with 1 mic, I'd probably grab a Shure SM57 or 58. They're plenty capable of getting great guitar and vocal sounds on their own. If you were going to be recording more guitars than vocals, I'd probably grab the 57, and if you're recording more vocals than guitars, I'd go with the 58. Condenser mics wouldn't be my first choice for loud guitar amps, it's just what I happen to have lying around. These days I record most of my vocals with a Shure SM7B as opposed to a condenser mic as well. I don't have an acoustically treated space, so the SM7 is a bit more forgiving than a really sensitive condenser. Hope that's helpful!

    • @phillipgraham2244
      @phillipgraham2244 3 роки тому

      Shure Beta57a is a much better vocal mic than the 57/58, and also good on guitars. That said, it sounds different than the original 57, which has a peak around 7k, and then is a bit softer above that. It's also not as forward from 300-600 as the original 57. But you can always shape it with EQ to be more similar.

    • @estebancandiaburgos
      @estebancandiaburgos 3 роки тому

      @@phillipgraham2244 don't know why but to me its always hard to get a powerful sound from the 57 when try vocals, maybe its me and i need to start singing louder, BUT still i feel like is always needed more gain in the input for this mic for vocals, maybe-also cause was thought for put it in front of a loudspeaker instead of a human mouth. really don't know...

    • @phillipgraham2244
      @phillipgraham2244 3 роки тому

      @@estebancandiaburgos it's important to remember that the gain of the microphone at the preamp has nothing to do with the overall final product. There is a broad range of sensitivity for microphones. Vocals on tracks are often heavily compressed, and will have doubles and other tricks to fill them out. The big difference between the beta 57 and the regular 57 is above 12K, and the extra boost up there in the beta is very useful for vocals. As you see in this video, guitars are usually high and low passed at input, so the extra 12K does not matter as much

    This question has already appeared in the comments but has not been answered. I'm curious how loud you record ;)
    I can't hear the strings so I assume it's quite loud? Is it true?
    If you find a moment to answer I will be very grateful.

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  2 роки тому +1

      Typically I'm recording fairly loud. Not deafeningly loud, but around a hard hitting drummer level. Since I'm not recording for super long periods of time, I don't mind the slightly louder volume levels. It really depends on the amp though. Some amps sound great even at very low volumes so you don't need to turn up loud, but like you said, I like to be loud enough that you don't hear the sound of the strings acoustically being picked up my a mic. Doesn't take much volume though. If I'm writing or just practicing for longer periods, I'll often just play through an amp sim with headphones on or something to keep the levels down. Hope that's helpful.

    Have you completely banned the Suhr Reactive Load?

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  2 роки тому

      No, I love the Reactive Load and load boxes in general. I find them to be super handy when I'm writing / recording for long periods of time for a few reasons. If I'm trying to come up with parts and arrangements and want to use real amps, I can do it without the volume being too loud. It's also nice to be able to change the cab after the fact when you're mixing if you want to go for a different sound. And lastly, it's great to be able to come back to a song that I was working on a few months ago and be able to dial up the exact same guitar sound. I don't find any compromise in sound from the load box vs mic argument personally.
      Having said all that, I love micing up amps as well and I like to be consistent for the videos I've made so far, especially the amp demos. But those, I'm not playing for a super long time, so I don't mind cranking amps. Thanks so much for checking out the video!

    Great stuff! Quick question, how loud do you typically record your amps at? Also, any advice when using IRs and a loadbox?

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 роки тому +12

      Depends on the amp. Certain amps open up and start to sound good a bit quicker than others. The Friedman that I have sounds pretty similar regardless of volume so I can get away with recording at lower levels. The JCM800 wants to be a bit louder. Typically I'm at around a volume level that could keep up with a drummer. Not screaming lout, but still loud enough that if you had a shared wall with your neighbors, they'd be pissed. For these videos, I'm not recording super long, so I'm not killing my ears. As for recording with IR's and a Loadbox, I LOVE that solution. I had been thinking about making a video about micing up amps vs using a loadbox. IR's have gotten so good these days that honestly, you'd be fine going with either. I'd say set your amp just like how you'd play it with a live band, make sure your amp's impedance matches the loadbox, shoot for -12db on the way into your interface, find some IR's you like, and you're good to go! Thanks so much for watching.

      @@ZachWish Thanks so much for the reply! I'd love to see a video on you silent recording process with IRs. I have never been able to get IRs to sound like the real amp in the room sound. I am looking forward to trying out these tips!

      Exact question I was gonna ask. Thanks for the reply Zack. I would also like to see a video comparing IRs/load box and your cabs mic’d.

    It looks like you have at least $30,000 worth of gear or more. How do you afford it all man?

    Heavy duty inside baseball follows:
    1. High and low pass your reverb sends, as well as the returns. Adjust the latter after adding the former. I suggest 300-600 highpass and 8-12k low pass
    2. Try drying up the reverb send with a parametric cut on the send between 2-4k. 2-3dB is enough. Try the opposite on vocal verb.
    3.boost 750 into the verb send to accentuate "grit"
    4. Play with predelay and reverb send lowpass cutoff to increase or reduce picking audibility
    5. Double one of your gtr input mic tracks, bandpass to whatever you want to accentuate (e.g mids) compress 1176 or distresseor style and blend under the original
    6. For hard panned stereo guitars: add medium hall/room. Very short (6-700ms) pan INSIDE (e.g. 75%), bandpass the verb send 400-10k or so. Tweak pre delay (Typically between 7-15ms). Mix in sparingly. Will widen the guitars at first, and then become a nuisance.

    "bought the TLM is a relatively inexpensive vocal mic"....that mic is about 800-1200$ compared the the SM57 which is about 100$. i absolutely love your videos man, but this is extremely misleading lol.

      I can see why you'd say that, but once you get into the world of pro studio mics for vocals, things start getting super pricey, but it's what a lot of people would expect to see if you booked out a high end studio for a day. If you look at most industry standard mics you might find in a studio:
      U87: $3,500+
      U47: $8,000+
      251: $10K+
      C800G: $10K+
      C12: $10K+
      U67: $7,500+
      Manley Ref: $3,500+
      TLM102: $729 (new) $500 used
      Not saying the TLM is cheap by any stretch, but in the world of high end vocal mics, it's a "relatively" inexpensive vocal mic. Definitely not trying to be misleading. Thanks for checking out the video!

      @@ZachWish oh no, I absolutely agree with you on that. I own a 103 myself and have worked at pro recording studios and seen how expensive the gear can be. I just thought that in the context of your video (what seems like a home recording setup) that a Neuman TLM isn't what I would call "inexpensive". You have a beautiful setup, and your video is exceptionally spot on with how to setup and record. I only meant my comment in jest, I absolutely love your content 🙌.
