  • Songs for the Kete has been established as a place where people can come and gain a basic understanding, knowledge about using the correct waiata for different occasions on the marae or workplace e.g. Tangi, weddings, mahi, meetings, birthdays.
Also to help encourage those who are not confident singers or speakers of Te reo and feel intimidated or whakama (shy) when put in a situation where they are asked to support with a waiata (waiata tautoko) Floss is an emergent speaker of Te reo and very uncomfortable singing publicly or under pressure but is happy to learn new skills here for this kaupapa. Riq is an intermediate speaker familiar with Tikanga and comfortable with performance singing.
We hope you enjoy singing along and adding more waiata to your kete.
HE HONORE can be sung or spoken as a karakia, its message is universal, its sung everywhere and can be sung on many occasions, from tangihanga to meetings, and classes.
He honore brings together all elements of spiritual and physical realms.
    He honore (honour)
    He Kororia (glory)
Maungarongo ki te whenua (peace upon the land)
Whakaaro pai e, ki nga tangata katoa (good will to all men)
Ake ake ake ake (for ever and ever and ever)
    Amine (amen)
Te Atua te piringa (to the lord, my allegiance )
Toku orange (my wellbeing) x 2
    Amine (amen)

Kia ora e kōrua atawhai! I agree it is quite a challenge to rewire your brain from speaking English to te reo Māori. But doesn't it make you feel so proud when you know you have permanently changed the way you say something and thus are being a better role model for others who are emergent learners! I resonate with your journey, Floss. Thanks for this great little series and the kōrero around the waiata - giving us the meaning and appropriate time to use the songs you've shared is an important bonus. Pai rawa ō mahi x
