I remember seeing Jay Kay on Top Gear here in the States. He said the director was so concerned about the room being rolled around and the need for choreography. Jay Kay said he looked at him and said I've been dancing in front of my mirror in my bedroom my whole life. I got this. And so he did!!!!
This will always be one of my favorite music videos. Combine a skilled dancer in Jay Kay and an innovative director in Jonathan Glazer and you've got a timeless piece of art.
It's weird to consider this, but he's not being pushed and pulled at all. He's the only thing that's still (or the couches when it seems like they're "moving" with him). The "wind tunnel" scene was just a bunch of guys holding onto the wall and staying still while the set moved backwards.
@@TheCornishCockneyokay just because the 60s and 70s had their time it does not mean the 90s music speaks to humanity and forecasting what is going on in the future the younger generation are enjoying it so give them some credit
I always thought it was the floor!! Mind. Blown. Jonathan Glazer - The Making of Jamiroquai's Virtual Insanity: ua-cam.com/video/MzwY7ii582Y/v-deo.html
This is how you should start talking about "magical ILLUSIONS" and "different sets of coordinates interacting with each other" in school ... like someone in a car perceiving "the world passing by" but someone outside just sees the car move.
From what the director of this video said, the walls are made to move, and they have set bolts on the walls to make sure the couches don't move when they don't want them to.
Geeks of Mucklebee you didn’t mention there track ‘Light Years’ Great video to watch, but even better to watch them perform it live ua-cam.com/video/dbi-iNOIoSw/v-deo.html Fun fact: the base player was 17 years old when the band formed... 17!
So the set (walls and everything) is basically a giant cage on wheels. They took it and found a giant warehouse with a grey smooth floor and they fixed cameras to the cage and roll it around so when he's standing still it looks like the room is moving around him. The chairs move or stay in place because they also had wheels and they locked them in place to the walls so when they want the seats to move they just release the lock and boom, chairs are "gliding along the floor on their own".
Oh i LOVE this Jamiroquai video, good choice, My favourite video is "Like a Rolling Stone" by the Rolling Stones.Coincidentally, JK, lead singer of Jamiroquai makes a split second appearance in the video.
The thing to realise with this video, is Jay Kay remembered where the sofas and couches were going to move depending on the backstage grips and prop masters, the treadmill style flooring and walls, and the choreography... and he then ad-libbed all of his moves because he simply knew where the props were going to move. At the same time miming the words to the song so it matched the song.
the camera was apparently actually fixed to the surrounding which moved, i.e the camera along with the walls and ceiling moved about, the floor remained static except the armchairs that were moved separately via remote controls.
"Starlight Brigade" by TWRP. It's like a full 80's anime movie, exploring the use of light and color as a metaphors for hope, that only takes a few minutes to watch, and fits perfectly to the song. Even though the guest singer is from a very NSFW band, this song is completely clean.
Oooh, here's a few of mine: 'Sledgehammer' - Peter Gabriel. 'Red Hands' - Walk Off The Earth. (Apparently all done in one take!) 'A Kind of Magic' - Queen. 'Happy Hour' - The Housemartins.
Back in the 90's this video was one of a kind, no one had done anything like this before and the reaction to it was insane. The genre of the band and this song is acid-jazz, or jazz funk. The song itself is lamenting the proliferation of technology in our society, at the expense of human connections and preserving our environment.
I know I'm super late to the party by what 24 months but there's a tutorial video Jamiroquai shows you how they did the video and indeed the floor wasn't moving so that makes it even more awesome and his footwork that is
The small room was on rollers with a crew of men pushing it around. The camera was on a fixed head. The couch and chairs were attached with hooks that could be released. When the camera tilted up or down to follow the bird and roach that was an edit point. Check out Chemical Brothers "setting sun" or Basement Jaxx "where's your head at".
My favourite music video is Drop from The Pharcyde. An innovation in the 90's Hip Hop music videos and very influential. For reference Memphis from AG Club or I Wish I Missed My Ex from Mahalia. I love the backwards video idea!
Favorite music video, no question: SORROW Pink Floyd 1994 Pulse concert The while concert is worthy of a watch, you'll never see a comparable stage show combined with EPIC live music! So clean, so clear and hits every fibre....
The secret to this video was that it's not the floor moving, but the entire room moving instead and with the camera fixed in place on the front end. Furniture not meant to move was fixed against the moving walls and then undone to "look" like they were moving lol
No, it wasn't done in one take. Generally when they panned to the bird or the bugs, they were resetting for the next shot. Also of note, the ending didn't work out. They intended blood-like fluid to stream from the walls but it failed to work. All they ended up getting was a trickle from a hole in the background. You can just perceive it if your look for it. Most impacting videos? Closer - Nine Inch Nails Wicked Game - Chris Isaak Hurt - Johnny Cash Take On Me - A-Ha One - Metallica Everybody Hurts - REM Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel Thriller - Michael Jackson You have lovely kids. Some of these might not be recommended for younger people.
It`s realy hard to choose one favorite video. One that came first into my mind is "Land of confusion" by Genesis. Another would be "Danny California" from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, "murder on the danceflor" by Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
This video was easily created by having the walls moving and attaching and detaching the furniture to the walls by just screwing them to the walls. The camera is also rigged to the frame holding the walls. So all the walls are moving with the camera as one frame, and furniture that got fixed into place. So there is a whole team that hold onto handles on the outside, and he would be dancing in the middle while the director was shouting move up/down/left/right and stop all the time. So no... no moving floor. Just a fixed boring old grey concrete floor.
Loved this one from the first time I saw it! Excellent choice! I would nominate Michael Jackson's Black Or White. Morphing was a fairly new technology at the time and this video was astounding!
What brings a smile to my older-millennial face is focusing on the faces of these kids. You can just recognize the 'whoa, cooooool' vibe immediately ;)

I think it’s closer to 25 years... Yeah, 1996. I feel old now.
Every aspect of this song and video scream "smooth".
Ok go here it goes again is a great video if y’all still reacting to things like this ...actually all their videos are cool like virtual insanity
His voice is so reminiscent of Stevie Wonder. 👌💜

I was about their age when I first learned about Jamiroquai. So refreshing to see their reactions because I had about the same reaction as them!
Fun fact about the music video, it's not the floor that's moving it's the set around him, as it is explained in the making of video.

This won the MTV Video of the Year in 1997.
I'm sure this video one 'best video of the year' back in the day. Still better than most music videos being released today !
They did it in 4 takes and the room moved, not the floor. One of the best videos ever made and one of the best songs of the 90’s.
The floor wasn't moving, it was the walls
that's how they make the video, but in the "world" of the video the floor is moving

"An honest mistake" by The Bravery. I just love how it ends lol
Also, Jamiroquai predicted our -now normal- twisted reality....
How do you know they werent tallking about back then?
The room and camera are connected and the entire room is on rollers, so simple but so effective
