Glad to see you're back! Must be plenty of work to do on your new home. Looks like you have makeup under your eyes at 2:46. All that molted metal splashing your well protected legs. :-) Great video!
Dude, your vids are great; but please stop leaving gas containers on the ground next to thermite reactions. No matter how low the risk may be (and I doubt it is seriously that low), we don't want to end up with a crippled, homeless, or dead Kevin. Take care! Keep making these great videos. Excellent idea btw. Very inventive and super interesting.
Metal is thermally conductive...the heat would be wicked away before the canister could burst...that's like saying that a cigar really can light a pool of gasoline...which it cannot...that only happens in movies. You see, most liquids have a low heat transfer coefficient, and gasoline is no exception...it seeps into the "cherry", and extinguishes the ember before the heat from the ember can cause it to ignite. Science.
The metal can only adsorb (or conduct) a finite amount of thermal energy before the structure will begin to deform or break down. Your analogy breaks down somewhat in this scenario. Gasoline needs an appropriate mixture or fuel and air for combustion. A lit cigarette does not possess enough energy to overcome the activation energy required to start the reaction; and because it is a liquid the ember is quickly extinguished, leading to a rapid reduction in available thermal energy. Molten metal, on the other hand, need only to splash onto the metal container of propane in a sufficient quantity so as to compromise the structural integrity of the metal tank. A decent glob that splashes down on the tank and remains there for any length of time could very well create just such a catastrophic failure in the tank wall. You have to remember, we are talking about thermite reaction temperatures; not scarcely burning paper.
4:20 I love how you usualy manage to do amazing and potentially dangerous ideas safely, however that was a genuinely dangerous mistake. You never leave a blowtorch with a tank of compressed gas next to the tower of 2500°C burning metal you just lit with it, no matter how confident you are that your double layer plant pot and plaster crucible will not break. Thank you for so many amazing videos and please continue producing similary wonderful and crazy ideas - just please be safe.
The difference in crystal size is actually a really cool and very fundamentally important principle in geology. Using nitric acid to reveal that on the sword was really cool!
Hey dude love the video!! Thermite never fails to entertain us! Keep up the good videos, I see ya put in a lot of effort into this one and you really can tell how awesome it is! Cool vid!
if any of you are curous what the fricc thermite is: Thermite is a pyrotechnic composition of metal powder and metal oxide. When ignited by heat or chemical reaction, thermite undergoes an exothermic reduction-oxidation reaction. Most varieties are not explosive, but can create brief bursts of heat and high temperature in a small area.
The Hacksmith just happened to be in my area last week, so he stopped by for a few hours to hang out and help with my thermite tests! ua-cam.com/users/MstrJames is his channel, hes a cool guy! When you mix fuel, metal oxide and metal powder in just the right way, it burns at 2000 degrees Celsius. Hot enough to cut through nearly any barrier known to man. Throw some C4 into the mix, and you've got one hell of a combination.
I was just thinking about channels I haven’t seen content from in a while and one of the firsts I though of was Backyard Scientist as he’s one of my favorites. The main reason it handles more like an axe is because its really imbalanced. Maybe try adding a counterbalance and seeing what affect it has on its cutting ability?
I believe the vikings made swords with human bone ash. "Lotte Hedeager makes this claim in her book, Iron Age Myth and Materiality (2011), on page 143. She backs it up by citing a really interesting journal article (Gansum 2004) that looks at the carburization processes used to turn iron into the steel some Viking swords were made from. That article argues that some swords were likely carburized using bone ash (you burn bones in a sealed container with iron, and the carbon from the bones turns the iron into steel), and further that we sometimes find evidence of bone ash near forge sites, and further that the unexplained pits full if ashes near some cemeteries, too small to be cremation pyres, look rather like the remains of something a smith might make to carburize a sword. It's all very circumstantial, but very evocative and exciting - if it's what actually happened."
