Truly a hidden gem!
Need a vinyl of this.
You may not remember me, but I was your biggest fan, Rick Murfin, your old manager, I am so happy to hear your music preserved for posterity forever, the nights at The Gasworks and The Piccadilly Tube seem like only yesterday, listening to Benjamin Button mixed with old Genesis, hope you're all doing well and that your music will last forever in my and others hearts. Hearing you again gave me chills and goosebumps, you guys were ahead of your time, too bad life got in the way, I wish I could turn back the clock, and have the money I have now to invest in Nightwinds! I even have a friend who named his yacht after you!!! CHEERS and all the best!
Do you remember when they played at A. Y. Jackson in North York?
Wow thank you for sharing your wonderful memories good sir. This band was and is indeed a treasure. I will always remember these great tunes
Great pick! Never heard, but dig it a lot! So prog; amazing keyboards. Influences of early Genesis and reminds Marillion...
Love 70's obscure prog bands.
Greetings from Brazil!
This is shockingly good! I know 2 of the players but met them long after this was recorded. Did NOT know they had such talent!!
many greetings for you and them!! tell them i love his album!! im listening this mornig... two times! loud sound!!
Great band. I saw them so many times back in the day in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls - the Queenston Tavern and the place next to the Sundowner (forget the name), and once at Beamsville High!! Genesis, Ambrosia, Gentle Giant and their own amazing music. Brings back old memories for sure.
The place next to the Sundowner was Uncle Sams. Great venue for rock bands back in the day.
Maravilhoso! Ouvir essa beleza no Brasil caótico de 22 é um acalanto para a alma.
Bom é o Brasil de 24, né?
Absolute quality, songwriting, musicianship vocals production, top notch. How comes this band evaded me until now?
How the hell is this not right next to Triumph, just a step behind Rush (because everyone is) in the Canadian rock pantheon?!?
This album is FANTASTIC!
Don't forget FM, Saga and Max Webster. April Wine too.
Exactly what I like about prog - an emphasis on composition and melody over endless, pointless instrumental masturbation. This is the best prog album I've heard in the last week and I've been listening to them nonstop
never knew a Canadian prog act could escape the influence of Rush and draw more from Genesis! I think had there been internet great bands like this would have gotten much more acclaim.
There are many canadian prog band that have nothing in common to Rush. Harmonium and Pollen are some of them.
What a bass player especially on pirates
He's like a cross between Stanley Clarke, Geddy Lee and Chris Squire.
Back in the late 80s , someone at work also loved prog. They loaned me a cassette, I was blown away by the entire album. Regrettably I returned the cassette , never to hear this very talented collaboration until many years later. Thank you , thank you, for this fantastic upload!!
Shockingly fantastic band
This is new to me. A great album that was sadly overlooked in its time.
Oh man. I saw these guys when they played my high school in 1979. I forgot about it until looking through my yearbook today. Forgot how great they were.
Holy shit really?
The instrumental opening section of "The Pirates of Rebecca's Choice": Now I know where the Austin-based band "13 of Everything" got the idea for their 2005 song "Bird in Hand".
A good Canadian prog rock here with a dash of Genesis influence.
exactly, buddy! i also noticed some Genesis influence. it's quite obvious!
@@Olegzyan Yeah, I would say more than just a dash. On some songs they definitely have their own sound as well but on others there is an unmistakable Genesis influence. Some songs are like Genesis with Chris Squire on bass.
Rush & Genesis had a child!
@Useonlyforstudy M'Dear come on, man, no ) but not bad definitely!
Good analysis
Hacia 20 años que no escuchaba esta cancion,
Perdon TEMAZO
As the Crow to flies
This rules!!!! And a local Niagara band? Insane.
brilliant album! and a band who should of definately carried on! what a shame!
Im in UK and this holds some memories for me great album
The lonely Rocker digs this kinda music!
¡Discazo!
I always enjoy hearing this music
grande album
Suenan muy bien. Auténticos!!!
Excelente banda y gran álbum.
I own the mellotron M400s, s/n 1167. Original tape set was: MKII 3 violins/GC3 Brass (phased trombones)/8 Choir. This according to the gents at Streetly Electronics (All Things Mellotronic) in the UK who overhauled the machine for me. The violins sound much different than the usual m400 3 violins. Some custom EQ here.
solo para entendidos buen material prog
Well, this is a great surprise. I loved this band...made a point to go see them regularly as no one was attempting and succeeding at this genre at this level that I could hear, and I was a progressive fanatic. Wherever you guys are thanks for the music and inspiration for a fellow musician.
I had this on cd a long time ago. Unfortunately it is no longer in print and probably never will be again.
The bass is so influenced by Giddy Lee at 12'13 (The Pirates of Rebecca's Choice). Nice riffs!
Maybe its the other way around ??
@@westrig180 I doubt its "the other way around". This record, this band's debut any ONLY record is from 1979. Rush was already recording Permanent Waves, their 7th studio record. Highly unlikely Rush was influenced by these guys. I didn't say Rush might not have heard them or appreciated them, but it is very clear Rush preceded them by several years.
@@westrig180 I think Geddy had already firmly established himself as a force in rock bass by the time this bassist hit the scene.
@@vbassone It's pretty unlikely Geddy even knew of this band. They were pretty obscure. I could be wrong though. Regardless, Geddy was influenced by Chris Squire so even if Geddy did know this band and heard them he would have already established his sound by the time he heard it(like you said).
@@mikereiss4216 Well, Geddy was listening to MANY obscure bands and bassists in the 1970's particularly, who were not widely known to the public. A great example of this is during one radio interview in 1978-79, Geddy mentioned liking bassist Percy Jones's playing very much from the English fusion band Brand X. Most rock fans don't know of Brand X at all. However, as far as this discussion on whether Geddy was INFLUENCED by the band shown in this video, that's another thing entirely because the bassist in this band sounds like he was playing in a similar style to Geddy's actual style, and we know between this guy and Geddy who was doing it on records first; Geddy......
There is a typo in the description, first song is named "We Were the Young," not "We Where The Young." Also, great album.
Lembra Genesis na fase Peter Gabriel ;)
good ole vintage prog! I can trace some Genesis influence.
Nice stuff,
A band came to my high school, Agincourt Collegiate in Scarborough circa 1980, and played spot-on covers of Carry On My Wayward Son and Stairway To Heaven (that may have been a different band). Could that have been Nightwinds?
Nope, they didn't play those tunes. (Soundman for the band)
@@drumslapper do you know if any of them are still playing music? This is fantastic! I remember being blown away by them when I saw them several times at the Breslau Hotel.
@@timmartin56
Hey, yup they still continue to play at some level. I was the front of house sound guy. Gerald as you know is Exchange, guitar plays ambient type, bass dables but basically gave up on the industry. Drummer does shows every two years or so doing Genesis tour shows, Trick, Wind, Lamb etc. I was involved in two of the video shoots for these, great stuff.
Glad you enjoyed our shows, it was a blast.
Cheers,
Bill
@@drumslapper Glad to hear Mike is still out there playing, he was a top notch drummer.
@@toddstevens13 well if Mike does another Genesis tribute in St Catharines, I'll post the date. They do an excellent job of recreating the tour shows.
Sounds very similar in style to Wind and Wuthering by Genesis
is it possible to get a copy of this on vinyl?
Mark Kopernicky Sorry, it was never released on vinyl. Fact is, while it was recorded in 1979, it wasn't released until 1991, on the Laser's Edge, on CD only (by this point vinyl was thought of as obsolete so most record companies had abandoned the format). This album had never been reissued. The Laser's Edge is still around, they could reissue this on vinyl (the label has been issuing some of their recent titles on vinyl).
@@Miler97487 From what I understand the master tapes for this were lost so it seems unlikely it will ever be reissued.
Reminds me van der graaf generator
Van der Graaf Generator?? Have you ever listen to a Van der Graaf Generator album? I don`t think so!
Maybe on the vocals and the use of keyboards in some songs, but it's very original for sure
I will never understand this "sounds like" rubbish on youtube.
It doesn`t sound like Genesis, Rush, Van der Graaf Generator at all.
The singer is horrible! It would sound much better with a different singer.
Music is fine, but the singer ..........
Amateur quality vocals aren't necessarily a deal breaker for me, as long as singers sing their notes close enough that I can unambiguously transcribe everything they're doing onto a notation staff. I'd even argue that Peter Hammill had his fair share of singing a bit "off". I wouldn't disagree though, that this group's vox tone probably isn't their most attractive feature.
Regardless, I'd definitely rather listen to this stuff than that Nightwish cheese, even if the production's not as good. 😂
