They were beat up and always had something wrong with them. They'd be in the shop for 4 months then come back and work for about 2 weeks before the keys or pads were broken or missing again. Anyway, I always wanted to play BC parts, but these instruments had to be shared by all students -- beginners and experienced. That made them too unreliable to make it worth learning the music. My family could barely afford a student Bb clarinet, so a BC was out of the question.
I don't play clarinet I play the trombone but I still appreciate the value of instruments like all instruments they are special and should always be protected and how expensive they are

Four low c bass clarinets for concert and the other 2 four marching I'm the only person in my band that the band directors allow to play all for all region solo and ensemble and even concert season if I'm bored. But I'm I sophomore with no job. Idk how they would react if I told them 3 are like completely broken and not usable

If you're wondering why the bass/contrabass clarinets look like saxophones, that's cause they were designed by the inventor of the Saxophone, Adolphe Sax. 🎷
The saxophones just sees this stepping half way out of the room and is like nope and walks back in Edit : I did in my 4th hour and that’s band for me this year and I was playing it and I would say like 75% of the percs ( there’s 8) where banging on in what every they could get there hands on like the walls or clapping it’s was fun this all happened when I was playing my bass clarinet

This sounds like the stuff that I imagined writing, but never got down on paper. It's mostly just a jass improv from a C blues scales and some extra stepping notes.

And for 45 brief seconds a single human child understood the use of a Bass VI, but he played it on a strange looking clarinet and was never seen again.

As a contra alto bcl player here, the talent of playing while holding it, much less while jumping is truly incredible
The alto clarinet, bass, and contrabass are literally the grooviest clarinet

Even normal soprano clarinets feel quiet with low notes

It is a E flat ContraBass, but they sometimes call those Contra Altos because it is one Octave lower than the Alto Clarinet.
