1. Approach your shelter like a hook (to know if your enemies are coming) 2. Orion's belt goes east to west, sword points towards south. 3. Break in your shoes, carry duct tape to put it on your feet as soon as you feel you're developing a blister. 4. Wear wool clothes (keeps you warm when wet), not cotton and layer your clothes. 5. Use bugs spray against insect (spray it on the cords of your hammock), it's also flamable. 6. Wild fur is very useful (beaver and wolverine). 7. Extra socks, dry them on your rucksack, or with you in a sleeping bag, put foot powder in them. 8. Wear sunglasses (snow blindness, sun). 9. DON'T EAT YELLOW SNOW!!!
I’ve heard a million different outdoor/survival tips; I’ve never heard of spraying your hammock cords with bug spray to prevent things from crawling down. Very clever. Thanks for the tip!!
Here's an Alaskan survival tips.. Don't walk up to momma moose an try to take a selfie. Don't feed the bears. Stay away from strip clubs in Anchorage...Lol
Good to know, alot of this was taught to me in Boy Scouts, makes me smike that SEALs use it too. Your demeanor and lack of drama kept me watching, thanks.
Greetings from Germany! I found out about your channel last week and watched every video. It's really nice to see someone who is not playing some big act or something but is just being himself and making genuine good content keep it up!
Stuff I learned from the arctic: 1. Shower at night. Your skin's oil and ph balance affects your ability to stay warm. If you can't shower, a wet cloth with some mild soap on the stinky parts helps prevent chafing and rashes. Deodorant/ antiperspirant can be used on more than your armpits. 2. The first parts on your body to fail in extreme cold that get overlooked are your eyes, nose, finger nails and toe nails. They can dry out quickly and start to bleed. Don't forget to moisturize after showering and humidify your room while you sleep. 3. Too many layers is dangerous. You need to have breathable clothing so sweat doesn't accumulate and freeze when you stop moving. 4. Your perception of how cold it is can change based on your food intake and activity level, but squeaky snow is a sign of extreme low temps. Use heightened caution with exposed skin when the snow starts to squeak under your boots while you walk. 5. Make a snow cave first. You can take breaks from other outside activities and warm back up, change socks etc, but don't forget to add an air port, the water vapor from your breath will quickly form an ice layer and co2 can build up quickly if your entrance is constructed correctly. 6. When you're near the poles, the sun doesn't rise in the east and set in the west, it travels in a circle along the horizon. Very easy to get turned around. 7. We know you're a tourist because you look at the auroras. They're no different than clouds to the locals. 8. If you find yellow snow, you're not alone. Know the local wildlife.
Shawn the bug spray you were talking about was permethrin. You put it on your clothes 2 hours prior and it lasts up to 5 washes. Permethrin for clothing, picardin for skin ! Great channel, keep it up !!!
Just have to say, I have the utmost respect for all you guys and the service you provided your country! I’m a Firefighter by trade in Canada and can’t get enough of your content...particularly the series when you and Rut go through TCCC. This stuff translates directly into everyday civilian life and I can personally say I’ve used tourniquets on many, many people over the years. Keep up the outstanding work with the channel and if you ever plan to speak in Canada let me know as I’d be first in line to hear you speak and shake your hand sir! Cheers

Mole Skin is a must have in the first aid kit. Great video! Thanks taking the time and thank you greatly for your service.
Fighting wildfire? Sheesh, that is scary as hell. Big props to you. You definitely have more cred than the majority of our military (talking ab non-combatants, no disrespect meant to anybody).

Hey Shawn, you and your team continue to raise the bar for quality content. Every new video of yours keeps getting better and better. I'm stoked for this series. Awesome tips guys. There's something to be said for learning something the hard way, but being snowblind on a mountain is some dangerous shit. You gents sharing your experiences is gonna save some folks some unnecessary hurt.
Hey Guys ! I was in the US Navy surface fleet , not frogmen like you . I was just a regular sailor who didn't have what it takes to be a SEAL . There's a lot of wisdom in your words and I learned many of the things you speak of . Sunglasses are vital to protecting your vision . When I stood lookout I learned to wear quality shades . I chose Gargoyles like Arnie wore in The Terminator . Not only were they cool looking and shaded my eyes , but they were ballistic protection if shit was coming at my face . The sun above is reflected off the water and can burn your skin and eyes , so I always wore my cover and donned a helmet during GQ . You don't want synthetic fibers against your skin , if you're in a fire they'll melt to your skin . We kept the AC running cold in the berthing compartments and slept under wool blankets . If I had to escape from my rack I'd bring my wool blanket along . My underway EDC was what i could hold in my dungarees . A lockblade knife and Zippo lighter were always there . If naval regulations had allowed , I'd have kept a stainless steel .38 revolver and reloads in my PFD . Well , I just subscribed . BZ .

Great video guys! Great point about wool! I am retired Navy my self. I started as a Seabee and my 1st deployment was Adak Ak. (Aleutians) Everyone coming to the island had to go to orientation. It was hosted by the island DOD Firechief. (25yrs on the island) He stated the same, that wool was the best survival material. All old Navy uniforms were made of wool. That is the reason. Keep up the great work, and thanks for your service!!
Christopher McCandless was his name............He was actually very well prepared. He ate the wrong plant. He had a guide that showed all the different types. Two of them were almost indistinguishable, unfortunately he ate the wrong one, and it killed him :(.................
Here's a great tip I leaned from the Princeton track coach AFTER I had burned two quarter sized holes in my heals on a long distance run with NEW running shoes. I was basically crippled until I followed his sage advice: 1) clean the wounds, 2) apply two coats of liquid new skin, which WILL burn like hell but puts layers of protection over the wound 3) surround the wounds with Dr. Scholl's padded donuts 4) pack a bit of lamb's wool into the space 5) Cover entire patch with a thick adhesive tape. I could run pain free at that point and only needed to change the pad every other day. RESULT: I completed my 350 monthly MDA goal, AS PROMISED, even though this injury occurred on week one of that August. We raised $7,500 in that love run from people who pledged to me.
Thanx for all y'all do men. Thanx also for this vid, I've been a woodsman all my life, raise in southern forest and I learned a couple of good tips and again thanx. Lookin forward to more great info. Hang tuff!
Thank you again for your service. You are real-life American super heroes. Good video, very informative. Thank you for sharing the info. Good idea for a series. 👍
Man... the best part of this video was when Shawn was talking about snow blindness & being lead by the hand down the mountain and without missing a beat Jeff was like “& that was the first time you held a mans hand.” & obviously Shawn comes back with his own “& it won’t be the last.” - haha, that’s one of my favorite things about Vigilance Elite, no matter who Shawn introduces someone, they always have this kinda relationship... & to me, thats fucking awesome. so props to you & all your buddies. but back to the topic... man, a LOT of people are dumb as fuck. they hiked a 2 mike trail ONE time & all of a sudden they’re trail masters. but they always forget something... & sometimes they even forget SOMEONE. anyways, dope video Shawn. hopefully there’ll be more videos from Alaska soon!
The best LOR I ever received was at tec ( Colorado) school when I gave a safety briefing, I just said don't eat yellow snow. The entire formation laughed...my commander...not so much!
Great topic. Looking forward to the series. Alaska is some serious shit. If you can survive out there... Any polarized sunglasses you recommend in particular?
Medical Lucot tape is the best thing for hotspots get it on Amazon it will stay on your feet for up to seven day even if you shower and tape early ppl as soon as you start to feel it If you wait your too late
Just a tip for your viewing audience. Years ago when I started buying custom lineman boots, I would play hell breaking them in. An old timer I worked with told me to slip a plastic bag over each foot, put my boots on and stand in the bathtub until boots were completely soaked. Lace them up and go about my day, the wet leather would stretch and conform to my foot and alleviate the typical hot spots and pain of breaking in new leather.
I know what you mean about breaking in your boots I've been there and never again. You're right this is going to be a great video series thanks man have a great day.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍
Definitely some overlooked things. The foot care is such an issue that can shut you down. I laughed my ass off over the hand holding. Thanks for the video.

8:05 considering keeping ants and other critters off of your hammock rope, a nice layer of patrolium jelly near the tied end should work as well. Idk if it's practical but it's an idea.

Great video as always Shawn. Can't wait to see more from the series. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us here on UA-cam. This is the next best thing since I have not been able to train with you sir. Thank you for your service. 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great tips all. Your tip about Orion is a good one but that really is more applicable to the winter months. For the summer time you can find south by locating the Summer Triangle formed by Vega and Deneb. They mark the northern edge of the triangle with Altair at the southern vertex. The line from Altair to the midpoint between Vega and Deneb forms a very convenient north-south line.
Long time wilderness field instructor and A tip I’d add is picaridin based insect repellent like Natrapell or Sawyer is proven to be 100% as effective as deet and won’t break down synthetic fibers. Putting deet on hammocks or nylon cord/webbing WILL degrade your gear and it WILL degrade your synthetic base layers and clothes.
Hey guys, great video! I've backpacked over 1000 miles in my life, and somehow I never knew that Orion's sword points South. I usually used the edge of the big dipper that points to the North star, or lining up the points of a crescent moon to find South. As far as insulation I heard somewhere that polyester fleece was developed by the military to be a lighter-weight alternative to wool that would still insulate when it's wet. I prefer wool a lot of the time though because fleece doesn't block wind very well so you need some kind of shell, and lots of shells are not very durable if you're around camp fires, going off-trail through the woods, climbing rocks/cliffs, etc... (although, I have an "special ops" coat that's pretty durable and does well over a nice thick fleece). Bug spray is also a good tip. I watched a relatively small mosquito bite me straight through my jeans once, so just trying to cover everything with clothes doesn't necessarily work. One more tip I use a lot, which I learned from someone that was in Desert Storm: In hot environments, wrap cloth or burlap around a full canteen, soak the cloth in water (unfiltered is fine) and hang it somewhere for the water to evaporate. When the cloth is dry, you'll have relatively cool water to drink. Looking forward to more survival videos!
Yellow snow, don’t eat it lol ha!!! Great information!!!! You guys are right, those are invaluable information thank you. This video & series will be kick ass & funny!!!!
just came across this channel recently. all respect. one issue with tip about orientation. Maybe it's not so in Alaska and closer to pole, but in rest of the northern hemisphere, the Orion is only visible during winter months. In the summer Orion is below the horizon during night, so it's not really a good tip as it only works during certain months.
You can also fashion your own pair of sunglasses by getting a strip of something solid (leather or tape or even paper if it blocks the sun out) and cut slits in it. Sort of like a cartoon bandit looking thing, it'll cut way down on the light entering your eyes. That's straight from the US Army Survival Guide.
Next time they should tell Shawn to show everything he has in his pockets at the start of the video and then let him go survive for 3-4 days and video it. Les Stroud style. I'd watch it. Cool video!
Awesome show, keep them coming. The button hook when being tracked is geniuses, would have never thought of that. On the next one can you show us how you skinned that animal with a butter knife and tanned the Hyde with rugged good looks before the intro....
When I read the title I said to my self, "Self, there isn't 10 survival tips ANYWHERE that you don't know!" Then I heard the first one and I says to my self, "Self, you should grab a pen right now and take solid notes."
Fleece works similar to wool. If it gets wet you will still be warm. I use wool and fleece bl;ankets when hunting, much better than sleeping bags. throw 4 or 5 wool or fleece blankets on a cot, 4 or 5 more on top, climb in, you are warm.

Good stuff, solid info! That Lester River Boreal is hard to beat.
Man I could definitely get lost in Alaska and never care to be found that place is amazing
I'm right there with you.
Or eaten by bears kkkkkk
Until you get a minor injury(by civilized standards) and wonder if youll make it until someone finds you.
Christopher McCandless was his name............He was actually very well prepared. He ate the wrong plant. He had a guide that showed all the different types. Two of them were almost indistinguishable, unfortunately he ate the wrong one, and it killed him :(.................

Doesn't matter how well prepared you are, survival is a team sport.
that tip on setting up and walking to your shelter site is priceless! Nice job.
My pleasure, this is going to be a good one.
I spent 10 days in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, and your info is good, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure man.
Man... the best part of this video was when Shawn was talking about snow blindness & being lead by the hand down the mountain and without missing a beat Jeff was like “& that was the first time you held a mans hand.” & obviously Shawn comes back with his own “& it won’t be the last.” - haha, that’s one of my favorite things about Vigilance Elite, no matter who Shawn introduces someone, they always have this kinda relationship...
I strive for a good camaraderie on here and I'm picky about who comes on the show. Thanks for the encourageing comment man. Cheers
Appreciate you two gents sharing some knowledge on survival.

The best LOR I ever received was at tec ( Colorado) school when I gave a safety briefing, I just said don't eat yellow snow. The entire formation laughed...my commander...not so much!
I guess the commander never got the memo. hahaha
Vigilance Elite He was incredibly uptight lol
Thanks for all the life saving advice. Yall are real heroes.
Great topic. Looking forward to the series. Alaska is some serious shit. If you can survive out there...

I just wear them
Youre absolutely crushing the Intros man😂😂👊
Thank you bro.
Really digging the videos, guys. Y’all don’t try and boast about shit or make it too complicated. Simple and effective knowledge. Thanks.
I know what you mean about breaking in your boots I've been there and never again. You're right this is going to be a great video series thanks man have a great day.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍
Thank you man. Cheers
Thank you for all of the videos. You've taught me alot already.

Definitely some overlooked things. The foot care is such an issue that can shut you down. I laughed my ass off over the hand holding. Thanks for the video.

Lmao I can’t take Shawn serious 😂 he’s like the most laidback man on Earth.
Hahaha, there's no other way to be bro. Cheers
Vigilance Elite honesty your reply just made my day man. 💪
No he is just dull and boring.
He's in Guinness for longest ankle to ear lobe while in the prone. Standard SOP in SEAL FM for night ops.
Ricky most seals are almost sleepy until it is time
The things no 1 talks about. Appreciate you bringing them to light.
It's a pleasure man. Cheers
8:05 considering keeping ants and other critters off of your hammock rope, a nice layer of patrolium jelly near the tied end should work as well.
Idk if it's practical but it's an idea.
Thinking out of the box. I love it.
Good stuff as always! Can’t get enough!!You guys are awesome! Can’t wait for the videos each week. Looking forward to the arrival of my VE gear I just ordered!!!
Awesome Kevin! Thank you for the order. Cheers

I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. I can't freaking wait to see this. Thanks in advance for these upcoming videos. 👊🏼👊🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great video..loved the button hook info
Awesome!
Thank you again sir! Great info. Curious what shades your wearing. Very nice.
Was that when you started holding hands with dudes? That one caught me off guard and made me shoot coffee out my nose. great videos
hahaha My bad bro. hahahaha
Haha, great stuff as always. Quickly becoming my favorite channel.
That's great news!
You guys have some of the best content online right now. Keep up the good work!
Thank you, we plan on it.

These are some brilliant tips. Simple and effective. Thanks fellas.
Yellow snow, don’t eat it lol ha!!! Great information!!!! You guys are right, those are invaluable information thank you. This video & series will be kick ass & funny!!!!
I wish it was already next thrusday so I could delete the other one.
Obviously this is a general discussion, but VERY valuable stuff - nice humor with it, you guys are awesome THANK YOU for your service.
Shawn kinda looks and sounds like bam margera
DEVMAR 3815 Lmao facts
LOL true
Thank you I was jus scrolling down to say that lmfao
"I'm shawn ryan and welcome to jackass"
Bam Margera looks like Shawn more like it.
just came across this channel recently. all respect. one issue with tip about orientation. Maybe it's not so in Alaska and closer to pole, but in rest of the northern hemisphere, the Orion is only visible during winter months. In the summer Orion is below the horizon during night, so it's not really a good tip as it only works during certain months.
Yeah I just commented the same shit.
It’s a great start to your new series. Great work I hope you keep them coming
Thank you, more is coming.
Next time they should tell Shawn to show everything he has in his pockets at the start of the video and then let him go survive for 3-4 days and video it. Les Stroud style. I'd watch it. Cool video!
Hahaha Thanks for hooking me up dude.
Awesome show, keep them coming. The button hook when being tracked is geniuses, would have never thought of that. On the next one can you show us how you skinned that animal with a butter knife and tanned the Hyde with rugged good looks before the intro....
hahaha
When I read the title I said to my self, "Self, there isn't 10 survival tips ANYWHERE that you don't know!" Then I heard the first one and I says to my self, "Self, you should grab a pen right now and take solid notes."
Hahaha That's awesome! Thank you
Awesome information, thanks for sharing. Thank you for your service of this great nation of ours!!!
Cheers
I remember deploying to SW Asia and going from jungle (black boots to new tan desert boots) blister galore!
Bad day
Fleece works similar to wool. If it gets wet you will still be warm. I use wool and fleece bl;ankets when hunting, much better than sleeping bags. throw 4 or 5 wool or fleece blankets on a cot, 4 or 5 more on top, climb in, you are warm.
Thank you for tuning in. Cheers
Good stuff. Appreciate this vid.
Thank you
Awesome tips to keep in mind. This is by far my favorite channel on UA-cam. Keep the videos coming gents
That's a hell of a compliment. Thank you
