Sambranikodi
Sambranikodi is a small island along with many other islands situated at the southern tip of Ashtamudi Lake, Prakulam, Kollam District, Kerala Sate, South India.
It is believed that during ancient times, small ships from China anchored along this coast. Local people referred to these ships as 'chambrani' and later the place came to be known as Sambranikodi.
The marine ecosystem is dominated by different species of lush mangrove trees. Tourists and students visit the place to see visual beauty of the mangroves, molluscs (Pearl spot, Clams, mussels), fishes, algae, birds, etc. along with 2 to 4 km pleasure walks along the shallow lake water level depends on the seasonal tides. Low tides ground is exposed. High times water will flood upto 2 feet high masking the ground area.
Mangroves are trees adapted to live in saline habitat inundated with water. The leaves are thick and leathery. The trees are having special adaptation to live is this special habitat.
Vivipary : Fruit is showing vivipary. The embryo develops while the fruit is still attached to the mother plant. The radicle meant for the development of the root is very long and because of gravitational force the embryo fell down to establish as a new seedling.
Breathing Roots (Pneumatophores): Some of the lateral roots grow against gravitational force (negatively geotropic) which contain minute pores for getting oxygen from air for the respiration of root system.
Prop roots: Prop roots are the supporting roots for holding the tree vertically against the water tides.
Ticket charge : Rs 150 per person - managed by DTPC.
Timing: Time 9 am - 5 pm.
All tourist have to leave this area after 5 pm.
