Playing constant 8ths even at this tempo is so challenging for me. That Trane could do so at twice this tempo and additionally make it sound both effortless and musically interesting is testament to his pure genius.
I have been playing trumpet for 47 years I was actually able to compose a New Head from these medium tempo changes. This tempo also helped me actually learn Freddie Hubbard's alternative Head "Dear John", which is much trickier phrasing than just learning to solo over Giant Steps changes. I'm also learning to solo with more traditional hardbop changes than the standard pentatonic music science that Trane used.
as a blues guitarist and songwriter i have no idea how to approach this just to solo. i cant get a key center in my play by ear method lol i need a trick to do it ....or the long road is ahead.

Nice practice tempo with genuine swing feel. Sweet comping! I LOVE the extra altered tones you add. That's FAR more inspiring to practice with than the many MIDI tracks which just play plain chords the same way repeatedly. THANK YOU!
at sessions the guitarists sometimes make my ears and brain hurt, but hombre, your comps are so very musical i often stop playing along just to listen to your excellent and tasteful voicings and rhythmic placement
I just keep reminding myself to hear a melody instead of learning licks. Gotta get inside those changes and the transitions so they make sense to your ear.
On bass, in Bar 1, I was always playing the original B note in a minor scale, up to the D7. I was playing just to approach the D note. Instead of playing "the minor scale," this tells me to replace that C# note approach with an Eb as the second note. Then, it will sound like a B major instead of a Bm. And, in Bar 6, I would play a C# note approaching the F#, instead of the Eb major (I learned that C# change off of another type of sheet music). It does make sense playing this way.

Awesome backing track! If any guitarists (any style or level) would like to learn how to play the melody with chords I have a "3 simple examples" lesson on my channel. Best, Robbie.
The coltrane changes are in 3 different keys. Standard 2 - 5 - 1, but then theres a key switch. If you look at the chords for similar notes theres a couple that you can stay on for a while. F# G D and D#. Just know when to switch and stay on those notes
personally I am in favour of basically just abolishing the major 7th altogether in favour of the 6/9 chord. But then maybe I've just been playing too much MPB...

No, is a testament of his hard work and good practice

Keep at it. The more you know the tune the more your mind will click in. Work was coltranes first name
John was practicing this for at least 2 years before play it in public.
Shout out to the people shedding right now :) I'm right here with ya
ayoooooooooo
Me too. Lost about a pound of hair already.
@@btat16 *slaps table* THANK YOU

The crazy thing is that I’ve been playing for 44 years and I’m still here woodshedding everyday. LOL
No excuses now! Everyone can improvise over Giant Steps chords after this lovely wrap! Thank you!
OH YEAAAAH

@@Halliday7895 it takes time... and time... and time... all the best!
Er... ALMOST everyone, I guess 😞
I think the idea is that the key center ships around quite a bit so that's what you have to get your ear around. Good luck. I'm with you on this.
I think this video just changed my life.

Agreed on the fact that MIDI tracks just play plain chords the same way repeatedly and robotically.
at sessions the guitarists sometimes make my ears and brain hurt, but hombre, your comps are so very musical

thanks so much for this. finally getting the hang of all these scales, its a comfortable enough speed
breaking it all down into mostly Gmaj, B maj, and Eb maj is really helpful.
Thank you, this explains the rhythmic structure which I never understood until now..
this is a fun one. this goes stright into my 'tunes to shed' playlist.
Just started this today. Thank You!
We’re gonna spend some time here
This is helping me learn the song much faster 🎶

Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you 🤘
I just keep reminding myself to hear a melody instead of learning licks. Gotta get inside those changes and the transitions so they make sense to your ear.
I need a ten hour version of this :)

that first Eb with the 9th on top ruins this for me, I just really dont like how it sounds. Otherwise this is fantastic.
personally I am in favour of basically just abolishing the major 7th altogether in favour of the 6/9 chord.
But then maybe I've just been playing too much MPB...
in my new world order an exception will be made for the opening chord of misty. I'm not a monster...
