In this episode I drive my classic mini for the first time in 2 years!

And Here you will be able to follow my classic mini restoration from start to finish! It is an Austin Mini Mayfair 998cc registered in 1986. I bought the car with 2 months MOT and it was running although the slave cylinder had gone. My plans for the car are to restore it to my standards just like my Orange one if not even better... if thats possible. Just bought a ‘92 1.3i Cooper.. drove it back 120 miles from the seller in the rain with no heater.. man I loved it.. but christ I appreciate my Audi A5 on long runs now 👍

I love old mini's. All of them. I wish i knew if my dads old austin mini was still on the road, the number plate started with yud. Cant remember the rest. It was in the 90's he had it, got it for £50 and welded all the rotting frames back up

This is a truly fantastic video Tom. I've followed the project for its the entire length and my comment still stands on your very first video on this channel with the orange mini. Ive been a subscriber ever since then and i have to say its a truly amazing feeling to see her on the road after so long. She looks gorgeous. Your videos have got me through so much and ive enjoyed them ever since the beginning.
Me and my grandparents (my mamar and grandad) used to sit on there sofa and watch your videos. Last year however my mamar was diagnosed with cancer and fort long and hard with it. For months she battled (in and out hospital) until she was hospitalised for good. Even in her deteriorating state she still watched your videos with me on her hospital bed. Ive loved cars ever since i was 2 and ive always wanted a classic mini. My mamar always told me i could do anything i want and eventually i would get a mini. As im doing my GCSEs the reality is becoming ever closer. However as much as she wanted to she would never see your finished car. It breaks my heat as it was so near completion. I will never forget what my mamar did for me and your videos and she will be forever remembered. One of the last things she ever said to me before she passed away was 'when im gone ill give you a little helping hand in getting that mini'. And what she left me certainly will.
I was incredibly sad after she passed afew months ago and my parents and grandad have been struggling to but at the end of the day the thing that cheers me and my grandad up are your videos Tom. We wonder what my mamar would think to the finished car and she will be missed.

Common thing, speedo's/rev counters don't work after new dash put in, i found my fault was there was no earth screw in the circuit board piece (only took me a few months guessing), which i forgot to put in. maybe worth a check see if same problem and also check the black and white cable is connected up correctly from the ignition coil as this connects to your rev counter and then everything else all connects up, possible bad earth connection i recon though same as i had, however your mini is ACE!

Nice vid, Tom, and lovely Mini. Modern, retro but tasteful at the same time. Where are you from? You have twangs similar to mine and the scenery looks like the Pennines. I'm from Bury/Bolton originally, but now live down in the French Pyrenees where I'm lucky enough to have some magical, perfect Mini (and bike ;o)) roads. I've had a few over the years, and am of the generation who learnt to drive in one, then had one as my first car, a bog-standard '84 City... more recently a Webber-equipped 1430 that was a beast, and impossible to drive anywhere slowly. Nowadays I have a '72 Innocenti Cooper (LHD for the roads over here) which allows me to fulfill my Italian Job fantasies on the windy, snow-capped passes on my doorstep. I've always been more of a bike man, but absolutely love Minis, and always return to them for 4 wheeled antics. Gets plenty of looks over here too! Anyway, keep up the good work and best of luck with your northern show...

Look killer. There's always a few ( dozen lol) things that come up on frame ups . I recheck all bolts after couple drives I had issues once .

Just got ahold of a 63 classic mini, right hand drive, 4 speed carb. Looks similar to yours but it’s blue. Gotta do a little upkeep like new tires, plugs wires, and batteries. Any advice?

The flywheel needs lightning, not to much, just enough to give it some low down zip.

@@TomShorrock I'm sure I had mine out with the engine in but check on here first. It's behind the clutch housing.
@@TomShorrock If my memory serves as its thirty years ago at least for me. Jack engine on that side and release mounting, undo all the bolts on the housing, sure you need a puller to get the wheel off, can't remember if you can make one. Clutch dust area??
Suggest check the web for video evidence, consider a replacement wheel £30 ish, so you can replace in a day, a pro light one i see costs £280.
I got my local engineer shop to lighten and balance mine.
My last one started life as an M reg 1275 GT clubman, I put a piper cam in with Tuliped valves, polished ports, block offset bored to 1340, competition rods and pistons, lightened flywheel and super strong wheel studs for the mental torque and a oil cooler in the hope I'd not need to open the window and put the heater on, it only delayed it. I lived in hilly Devon and don't like slowing down for hills, luckily it was only on reaching the top I'd have to ease off.
Spax gas shocks and alloy wheels meant it cornered like a train.
All that valve and port work plus the over lightning of my flywheel meant duel fuel tanks as fuel use flat out was 12mpg, but with the windows wide open and the heater on full, I could hold off 3 litre Ford Capri's on the motorway whilst watching the fuel go down.
How much did it all cost I want to know this because I want to do this myself
