  • Today I will talk about hardening off, watering, and thinning out pansy and viola seedlings. I will also be potting them up into bigger containers. Pansies are frost hardy. Seeds that were started indoors in late winter/early spring can be planted outdoors approximately a month or so before your frost free date. The varieties/seed packet mixes that I am growing this year are Got The Blues Mix (Botanical Interests), King Henry (Botanical Interests), Victorian Posy (Renee's Garden), and Can-Can Mix (RH Shumway). Thanks for this series on Pansies! I sowed 2 flats of pansies a few wks ago. I used Seed starting mix for indoors and finely misted the soil with water to keep it moist. They germinated last week in the dark with a dome in a cool area of my basement. I noticed as I moved them to the grow lights that the freshly germinated seedlings had white fuzzy stuff. I sprinkled some cinnamon on the top of the soil, along with a light dusting of vermiculite and cracked the domes to keep it from getting too humid. For two days, the seedlings were looking better, greening up, growing and more were germinating. Unfortunately, the best and biggest seedlings have fallen over and growth on newly emerging seedlings has arrested; I'm pretty sure due to damping off. I used brand new seed trays and clean water and good seed starting mix. I used the same batch of soil for my foxgloves, snapdragons and Sweet Peas with no problems. I'm guessing that the long, dark and moist germination time grew fungus before the seeds could get started? Have you had pansies damp off on you before? I'm going to be sanitizing my trays with bleach dilute and starting again as I'm obsessed with pansies. Any suggestions you can provide would be appreciated. Should I add heat to the equation before or after germination? I didn't think to use a heat mat due to pansies liking the cold. Also, when your pansies first germinated, were they pale (no green at all)? I'm assuming so since they germinate in the dark, but wasn't sure. Thanks!

    The seedlings look awesome Christa! I really like pansies. I have yet to start my peppers; I am behind. I got a full try of lettuce seedlings under my grow light right now haha! Great job!

      Get going on those peppers! Are you going to be able to put your lettuce outside or are you just growing it in the house? My peppers were germinated (in wet paper towels), now they are in seed cells and are sprouting up. Thank you.

    I started one today leaving it out in the garage it’s warm in there just until I see leave start coming in then harden off like you said it’s still cold here in spring 😩🤗

      Thank you! The main thing is to cover them with soil or something dark to help the seeds germinate. Also, they like cool weather, winter might be best for you.

    Have u ever had white dots on your Johnny jump up viola seedling leaves? I have two 6 cell trays and only three of the seedlings in one tray had little white dots on the leaves. I was able to wipe the dots off with paper towel and horticultural spray. The seedlings look fine now I was just wondering if u ever had this happen?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  5 років тому +1

      No, maybe it was some kind of mold? Or maybe something was dropped on them? Hopefully they will be alright.

    quick question...should the top that is providing a dark environment on the pansies seeds when you planted them be removed from the pansies after 7 to 10 days when they have germinated or should the cover stay there until they have their true leaves?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  5 років тому +2

      yes once you see a lot of germination remove the cover.

    I have Pansy and viola seedlings for the first time and almost everything I’m using is identical to yours… down to the shop lights and half seed starting mix. I am wondering how long it will take them to bloom. I wasn’t planning on uppotting them because I was hoping for the flat of blooming pansies like you see at the nurseries… what do they do? 😄🤞🏻

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  2 роки тому +1

      They don't take long to bloom but it really depends on the variety. I never timed it, but if I remember correctly, maybe 10 weeks or so? Good luck. You can definitely leave them in your tray.

    My seedlings germinated fast and started getting tall and thin. They have one pair of leaves and on some of the plants the leaves are dropping down. I water them every day but they started dropping the day I took the plastic cover off. Is there anything I can do about them being so tall and thin? Will they live?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 роки тому

      Are you using a grow light? If they are tall and thin, they aren't getting enough light. Move your grow light closer to the plants leaves 2-4 inches above the leaves of your plants. I would dig up some of the plants and plant them deeper. If you get the lighting situation fixed then they should be fine. As far as the drooping leaves, you are probably watering them too often or giving them too much water.

    This is my first time planting pansies from seed, and I'd say I'm about a week of growth behind you. It seems like we have a similar last frost date and I'm worried about hardening off before then, since I don't know how cold is too cold for these guys. What sort of average daytime temperature are you waiting for to start that process?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  5 років тому +1

      I put them outside in a sheltered location if it is 40 degrees or higher. If it's windy or rainy I am just keeping them inside at this point. Later on I will just plant them in the ground and leave them out full time, probably early April.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  5 років тому +1

      Just remember to do it gradually, an hour the first day, a little longer then next, and so on. I am still bringing them in at night.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  5 років тому +1

      I have some Swiss Giant Pansies that overwintered outside in a pot. Pansies can handle low temps but new babies that aren't established need a little more care. You should definitely be able to plant them out a few weeks before your average last frost date.

    • @734P4R7Y

      @@ChristasGarden It is hard to say here when it is safe (Toronto, Canada) so it probably makes more sense to go by average daytime temperature instead of month/time of the month. Last year we had constant freezing (like -17 C in April) right up until May, when it became like 30 C overnight. I've never had a problem hardening plants off in May, but before that I have no experience. Hopefully we will get some 4 C temps before May!!

    These and Johnny jump up.are hard to grow...you did great...i got about 20 ants out of a whole oscket of msube 200 seeds...you dont start these with light tho.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  5 років тому

      Thank you! Yes you are right, they like darkness for germination. I love Johnny Jump Ups! I am going to sow some more of those this fall. Yeah 20 out of 200 is terrible. Try Migardener, he has Johnny Jump Ups, they are only .99 per packet and they have a lot of seeds in them. I had good germination rates on those last year.

    I’ve always loved pansies but never got any. Are they perennials?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 роки тому

      They are not perennial. They grow best in the cool weather of spring and fall. Depending on where you live, you may be able to get some to overwinter if you plant them in the fall. I cannot get every variety of pansy to overwinter where I live in zone 6 but I have had really good luck overwintering Johnny Jump Up violas, a close relative of the pansy. If you live in a warmer climate, you might have even better luck. Once your plants produce a bunch of seed, they will eventually die. Most of the time, the heat of the sun in summertime will eventually finish them off. Pansies are so underrated, imo, they are gorgeous. Give them a try sometime.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  3 роки тому

      They grow best in cool weather. Heat can kill them off, especially if they aren't getting enough water. Last year I kept some alive in a pot all summer but I watered them a couple of times a day when it was very hot out. They actually survived this past winter and are blooming again.

    you can use paper cups...

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  5 років тому

      Yes, you are right and I am actually planning on using paper cups more often for seedlings. I have some paper cups here but they are a larger capacity and I am saving them for my tomatoes. The store is kind of far from my house so I just used the smaller plastic cups that I already had on hand.
