The Boston Bruins are the best team in the NHL so far this season. Nobody expected that after the offseason they had. We break down how they've had success this year & why they are the team to beat early on.

It can't be emphasized enough how much of an effect coaching and systems have had on the team's success. The fact a guy like Poitras "came out of nowhere" glosses over the fact that many Bruins acquired through trade and free agency adapt well into this system. A common trope with B's players is their strength on the puck and off puck play.

Their goalie coach deserves a shoutout too. In the last decade the bruins have had 3 different vezina winning goalies in Thomas, Rask, and Ullmark, and now Swayman is in contention for this year's vezina. Its like any tendie that gets signed by the bruins instantly becomes better.

@@lilhummus Bob Essensa has been the goalie coach since 2003! The team was giving up their fair share of goals until the Claude Julien became coach in 2007-08. Slight blips here and there but the organization has been one of the best defensive teams since then.

Mcavoy is playoff material. Their goaltenders are a year more experienced this time and they better stick with the tandem. Pasta gets a tiny bit better each playoffs but he will never be the same player when there’s not an inch of free ice. Defenses will always adjust during the series to the unique “system” that wins them so many regular season games. It doesn’t mean they’re not an awesome team or they can’t win in the playoffs it just means it takes the next level of grit, heart, determination, toughness, all the keywords to translate to playoff success.

The next year they swept Philadelphia and went on to win the Cup. This Bruins team might be better than last season. They'll make up for last season's embarrassment the way they did in 2011.

However a key point that you neglected to mention is that Montgomery got over confident and hinged entirely on Ullmark in the playoffs and didn’t hone on a strategy for defense to help offense. Those were critical errors that were made.
So that makes me wonder how they’re going to correct those two mistakes this season. The former is easy since all that needs is a simple rotation to be kept up at all tines while the other requires a bit more finessing.

Montgomery has said it himself this team is being bailed out night after night by incredible goaltending. Not fair to their Powerplay and best in league structure to credit only the goalies, but he has a point. They are also the measuring stick of the NHL and it must be impossible to bring the High Octane energy every night nor should it be their intent to throw all their energy into the regular season.
Great analysis I LOVE the Bruins’ system, I cringe watching Edmonton try to defend and I know I have it so good as a Boston fan. But yeah, they aren’t as good as last year’s team

Detroit owns Boston's 1st round pick for the Bertuzzi trade.
Well first the deal gives Boston first right of refusal to the 1st round pick either the 2024 or 2025 draft
Detroit will be picking about 30th overall in the NHL draft for 2024, basically a second round pick.

Good clip but it should be titlted "Jim Montgomery Has Evolved" (as a Coach,{optional})
When Montgomery was signed to coach t he Stars he was brought in because he was a "defensive mastermind" which was the same reason they brought in Ken Hitchcock, but Hitch had lost the room and the writing was on the wall for him by Christmas.
So, Montgomery comes in with a new, but still defensive system, and proceeded to further choke the offensive life out of the team, like Hitchcock handn't already done enough damage to the likes of Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.
To his Montgomery's credit, speaking of the new coach's defensive system, Seguin said"I dont know how you would play against it."
    He was pretty impressed.
By the time mid-late November rolled around and the team was struggling, Mongomery said "I admit I've got to loosen up. I'm choking the life out of this team."
He did in fact learn from worrying too much about sound defensive structure.
Your clip illustrates perfectly about the lessons he has learned as a coach, including letting players play to their strengths, rather than forcing them into a moulde, mostly meaning making them mindless defense-bots.
Monty has learned a bit of offense now, too, to put it mildly.

I think of all the guys that moved on, only Bergeron and Foligno were legit losses to the team. Hall has never been what he could have been, and even Krecji had an annoying habit of loooong slumps in production. When a team plays with a guy like Bergeron, they pick up on how he plays...that combination of excellent defense and smart thinking offence...and making those legs move even when they're burning... It's not magic, it just takes effort and a belief in what you are working towards. I look at last year's Bruins playoff run like the James Reimer breakdown in 2013, you get over it, learn from it and get your head back in the game.
Plus...it's been two years of almost non-stop wins. That makes for a hell of a fun season, and helps the sting of an early playoff loss (much easier than losing to Chicago in the finals I'll tell you that).

Those of us who know bruins history and hockey - believe the bruins have a better chance at a cup this season than last.
Same thing happened with new coach Tom Johnson 1970 - 71. That's the franchise record we broke last year.
They were heavily favored for the cup and went down to none other than the Habs first round
When we're setting franchise records we go down in the playoffs.
I was never so relieved than to watch us go down 3-1 against the ducks with 4 minutes left. I still think the bruins subconsciously blew that game cuz Brad marchand knows!
Don't be setting franchise records !
Any bruins fan that doesn't know this is not a bruins fan.
We had three star players out at the beginning of the season last year - the depth that stepped up is still around!
In bruins GM doesn't do clickbait - he doesn't consult the media or tell you what he's doing. Unpredictability & mismatches are 90% of the game
And the great 1-2 punch obviously couldn't get it done!?
They got their cup under the captaincy and leadership of zdeno Chara.
What we learned with Patrice bergeron injured last playoffs, watching Brad marchand lead the team to three out of four gritty wins-
Is it takes the son of a bytch, not the son of a social worker, to get through playoffs.
Good luck to patrice, get out of the way - it's been fun adoring his hockey skills
Now he's gone & it's time to get a cup!
