Radiologue is about Donald Crowhurst, a British sailor with little experience who entered a sailing race around the globe back in the '60s. He planned to cheat and was radioing crazy locations well ahead of where he should've been ("I was heading West 30 days faster") When he realized he was found out he disappeared at sea. The music really drives home his mental state and isolation. This is one of the best biographical songs ever written.
Minor correction; he didn't plan to cheat (as in wanting to win dishonestly), the poor bastard didn't have a choice. He put his entire life savings and borrowed money (mortgaged his house etc.) into the construction of his boat, so he had to partake in the race, even though, come the race, he knew the boat wasn't well suited for that kind of trip. "Can't go on, can't go back" is a reference to his predicament. He planned to fake his positions, wait it out at sea, and to eventually turn back...make it look like he made the whole trip. Sadly, Donald went mad at some point after being stuck out in the open sea for 8 months. It's a sad story of ambition coupled with human tendency for tragedy. Here's a video about him and the trip. ua-cam.com/video/yV7EBF8LAw8/v-deo.html
+Erwin Moller It's eerie, especially if you know the story behind the song (Donald Crowhurst). The song perfectly picks up a mind going through a mental breakdown.
I'll be gone now, either way that the wind blows I'll be back though, leave a light in the window When the waves die down, I'll be halfway round and I'll call you When the sun blocks out, hold the radio up to the phone I was dreaming I was heading west, thirty days faster Had a fever, woke up in a sweat, bailing out the water Can't go on Can't go back Can't go on... Can't go back Heard your voice coming through the noise Wrote it in the radio log Hurt my head wondering what you said So I threw it overboard Can't go on Can't go back Can't go on Can't go back Can't go on... Can't go back
I read that this song is based on Donald Crowhurst's death... Very interesting and intelligent. The tune itself catches the chaos that might've went on in Crowhurst
I love about people talk about the 'genius' of Kevin Moore...Meanwhile this band was formed and put together by Jim Matteos (The guitarist of Fates Warning). This was his project :-p
@21Fixxxer Never heard of thesee guys? if you ckeck the members, it is a supergroup, with lineup changes, it has included 2 Fates Warning members, Kevin Moore of Dream Theatert and more, 2 Porcupine Tree members, Cynic bassist and Opeth frontman, Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater, so it is a pretty awesome supergroup!
@gudjonsveins while it was definitely a supergroup in the beginning, OSI is Kevin and Jim. They are the soul and write the core music... and the sound is largely Kevin's influence. He is amazing.
@MartinAlvito I agree. Although there are a few tracks (The Escape Artist, Radiologue, Blood) that can stand up against anything OSi have released, the album just doesn't have the complete flow that I would like. However, the high points, when they come, are quite wonderful.
The lyrics are about Donald Crowhurst. He entered a sailing race around the world despite being an inexperienced sailor. He started late and was making terrible time and was under a lot of pressure to finish because of his investors. He began to falsify his reports, indicating that he was much further along than he actually was. Eventually he made land which would have immediately disqualified him. Instead of quitting and returning home, he went back out to sea and killed himself, supposedly by simply abandoning his boat and drowning. It's detailed in one of my favorite documentaries "Deep Water." "Can't go on, can't go back."
I think that Gavin Harrison can make any song sound great, especially a song like this that has kind of a trip-hop style. His rhythms are relatively complex, which really adds a lot to the tracks and that is not all that common for a percussionist to add so much to a song without taking away from the other instruments/vocals.
I'm so glad OSI exist. No stupid pointless show-off solos. Just powerful melodies, deep dark tones, killer vocals. Kevin did not belong in DT. Glad he left he's a genius. Along with garrison and matheos of course ;)
LOVE this song. I actually prefer Gavin's drumming on this song and for OSI in general..While MP comes up with great drum parts on the fly, GH's drumming seems more planned out (love the hip-hop kind of fill at 4:14 on this song) and I think it fits better with the OSI brand of songwriting.
I agree totally with you, Gavin here is not really different than in PT for example whereas mike involent in the songs was a total driving force, take The New Math for example or ShutDown, the drums were a huge part of the music. Again i'm not disminishing Harrison's work, i'm just giving my fair share of thoughts
+Nahomi González aww man, that APC 'By and Down' is so freakin' badass... Will have to check out Pure Reason REvolution, but my best guess is not much will top APC's unique sound. I'm not the biggest Maynard fan, but he is a great singer, I can't deny that.
I had the same issue, forgot the name of the song too, so I spent like half an hour trying to google the lyrics I remembered. So glad I found it again though, such a good song

I watched a documentary about this guy. Crazy story.
@@AlphaMachina yeah, right? There's a movie about him too, with Colin Firth, it's called The Mercy. It's a good movie, I recommend it.
@@trailovicluka6342 I had no idea. I'm gonna check that out. Adding these guys to my GUNSHIP, Carpenter Brut, Caspro playlist.
can't believe i just found this song after 11 years, so unique and addictive
@@MauriceChavez353 do we know whay this song is not on spotify anymore?
This is my favorite track on Blood. For those of you new to O.S.I...you gotta check out both of their previous releases. You won't be disappointed!
There is something about this song that keeps me playing it again and again.

Magic!
Yeah, the song is haunting.

Damn the fusion of that voice and the music, its just so mysterious.Glad i found this band.

Please just fill my entire brain with the drums at the end. And please recommend anything that feels like this. I love you all. I am very high.
Chroma Key, Porcupine Tree and my favorite, Four Stroke Baron.
I forgot one. Earthside.
Total drive down a highway, windows down, on a late summer night song.
preferably winter night
I wasn't even hoping to find this awesome band. Being fan of Chroma Key, I'm so happy.
This is a unique sound, it sounds like a mix of Nine Inch Nails, Porcupine Tree and Trip Hop music.
wonderful.... can't stop listening to this...
amazing song, my favourite since I bought the album, "can't go on, can't go back"
KM knows how to write lyrics, so he does!
This song is so badass. I love returning to it.
I love this album.. I love also Akerfèldt in Stockholm..
They are both excellent...what makes it even better is that they have a fantastic chemistry.
never headrd of these guys...it feels great when you discover an awesome band like this!
Here from an old deadwing dork stream. Thank you, claw🙏🏼
This Gavin's feel... oh my god, how good he is
Friend introduced me to them a few days ago. Now I can never go back.
have you gone back since ?
Doubtful
Reminds me of Porcupine tree, and Tool :) . First time hearing them
Great to have this band on tap in this mix. Must buy all the albums they made.
How have I never heard this song until now. Fucking amazing.
That undulating synth that starts picking up at 4:25 is an excellent touch
The best song on album!!

Joooder, qué cojonudo es este proyecto!
son jodidos dioses
nice song, standard good by OSI
Even a sane man who has seen combat understands this ! Implicit duality ....
I waited for a long time this track!!
I don't know why but I always felt like these lyrics makes me feel like the guy is in a forest of nowhere...
Lost at sea....lost in a forest.....pretty close!

@Surasanji Ditto. I love all the stuff you just mentioned.
Actually, Fates Warning is the backbone, since OSI is Jim Matheos's project.
Мега яко!
dream theater is the backbone of where this band came from, fates warning and PT are good, but not untouchable like DT
Guys, good news:
OSI is currently working on their fourth album and Metal Blade debut for a late 2010 release.
see you,

f'ing love it

manu12el A Perfect Circle, Pure Reason Revolution.
Rather Perfect Circle than Pure Reason R.!

This sounds like a cross between ( new) Fates Warning and Green Carnation . I like !
I'd like to make a Industrial cover of this
reminds me "mezzanine" by massive attack... a lot !!!
Yeah!
I was trying to type up ksi in UA-cam but I accidentally typed up osi instead. Now I'm glad that I made that mistake
This is a perfect soundtrak for john wick
"bailing out the water"
;)
Thank you
Best song out of Blood, following it are Stockholm and the tittle track.
Very similar style to The Pineapple Thief
Awesome to see a TPT fan out there!
ive tried some TPT but never rly got into it... got any song/album suggestions?
@@OoompaaLooompaa The Final Thing On My Mind
All OSI's songs bore me but this is just genius.
I think every OSI music track is awesome!
*anyone has the tabs for guitar and bassline? pls?*
Can anyone please tell me?! Why the hell is this song deleted from Spotify?!?!?!? :(
I had the same issue, forgot the name of the song too, so I spent like half an hour trying to google the lyrics I remembered. So glad I found it again though, such a good song
Same on other platforms. Record businessmen are evil bastards that don't care about music or the artists. The end.
It's back on again thankfully.
@@jamesmaston12 Yes!
@gudjonsveins yeah I know that now.I listen to all of these bands but when i first checked this song out I didnt know that.
It’s that mysterious talent that Steven Wilson possesses., rather arcane.......
This song is dangerous inside an unhinged mind consumed with hate and rage ...u know who u r
Important music
@Surasanji wasn't Portnoy originally the drummer for OSI?
wow this is very different. im definately checking these guys out. i love finding new good bands, like that other person said.
