i think we as skateboarders take ourselves way too seriously wear what you want if that follows a trend then fuck it wear it cause you want to, skate what you want don't spend time thinking about if you are following a trend or not. by doing this you turn skateboarding, the most fun shit in the world into a minefield of sorts where everyone is trying to avoid stepping on a landmine of ridicule.
a lot of people are angry about how he is venting about skate fashion, but you have to understand from a skater's perspective from someone who skated in the way early 90s. it was "our" thing, and everyone treated us like an outsider, so we rejected them as well. now skateboarders are really just a bunch of jocks who skate for companies like nikes, and want to be on stupid contests on espn.
As someone that skated in the early 90's and still does I see what the kids are wearing now and can't help but cringe. Sure 90's skate fashion was our own thing but it wasn't/isn't a nice looking thing.
Marc Johnson made some great points in this video. I see the same shit when I go to skateparks all the time. Everyones starting to get stylish haircuts and wearing Nike sb/ Adidas with chino pants and its really fucking weird. Its like star wars clones or something
Some interesting takes here. I always thought of the different fashions as being a sign of skateboarding transcending pop culture, of being a universal language. Skateboarding is timeless and know's no boundaries. But I really appreciate this insight, its easy to disregard how original and weird of a sight skateboarders must've been in the 70's/80's
I understand what he's saying about posers and shit, but come on! I always felt like skateboarding itself was greatly influenced by punk and rap and I personally like both styles. Skaters should be able to dress how they want and listen to what they want. We all have different tastes but that's what makes skateboarding original.

there is a difference between having taste for something and totally buying mainstream shit. mainstream shit doesnt comes from you it comes from mainstream fuckin culture doing your own shit is alot more interesting than dressing like 10981237478 other skaters just to be ''cool''
How do you get the longest most epic part in one of the sickest skate videos ever produced? Alcohol, lots and lots of alcohol. Lol, that guy is so fucking rad, he just did whatever it took.
I used to get shit for wearing Vans at secondary school here in London during 2006, they used to call my TNTs ''Air Force Nones'' which is actually hilarious and my Eras were ''Gay'' apparently, later that year the converse renaissance became a fully blown public trend in the UK and shortly after the same people started wearing Eras and Chukka Lows ect, it was like nothing ever happened and that's Life.
even though skaters are barrowing styles from past generations they always put their own twist on it and more importantly they still do things 1st when they come around a 2nd time Im from the area of the baggy pants and big shirts and though iv toned it down some, my shirts fit normal , I still dress that way but the bulk of skater rebelled against what ppl thought they should look like and started the skinny jeans area which im not feeling , ,first just hipster skaters but once hip hop culture bite that shit and started trying to look like skaters you started seeing all the hip hop skaters wearing them too. but lets give credit where its dew while skating is increasingly more racially diverse it was once mostly lower middle class white kids and are the only sub culture that has had a significant influence on pop culture not stolen from black or latin cultures pretty much every other fashion trend , music genre ,or slang can be traced back to ethnic origins but stolen and popularized ,or bastardized by whitey .and don't tell me surfing or snow boarding can say the same ,their to regional and have nowhere near the global appeal or influence ,and im not saying skating shouldn't be diverse if anyone is thinking that or that saying this on some white power trip or whatever , not at all my family is biracial, I love diversity its one of the things that makes skating great and its not about that anyway im jus saying skaters of all races, sexes, from all over the world should be proud to be leaders not followers of trends , so when somebody disses how you look or talk just laugh knowing they'll be doing the same thing in the next year or two, that's what I do
I remember people didn't know I skated in high school because I used to always draw comics and anime. I wore dragon ball shirts and whatever haha. The first time people saw me wear a "vans" shirt and shoes. People assumed I was a poser. It didn't bother me at all and found it hilarious when people saw me with a skateboard and word of mouth what tricks I could do. The biggest shit talkers were usually the ones that could barely do any tricks at all
The style comes from within the person, not the external circumstances. If you let the outside influnence you to the point of molding you completely, you've already missed the point on style. It's just like music. Many say hip hop and rap died, but in the under ground scene there is a plethora of artists coming hp with amazing work. So it depends where you look, and how you look at it.
Girl & Chocolate have always been the frat boy club in skating. I cant believe everyone else on here hasn't noticed. Livin in a rap video...brandon biebel 10 years later still tha same.
got a pic in my local newspaper 3 years ago doin a backside flip on some hip at my local park wearing an all white shirt, black torn skinny jeans and fucked up TNT5S VANS. I saw the pic and was so happy I wasn't wearing dumb shit like 95% of the time.
42-48 sized waisted-jeans and XXL shirts when we were a size 30-32 in high school back in early-90s We’d hate seeing anyone with DC Vans Etnies et cetera Marc is right. Anyone saying so is a young sh!t who doesn’t get it
He's fucking true though. It's almost like we can't find our own identity sometimes because we just bite off trends or some other skater's style. It's like yeah so this skater likes this but I bet the guy that mimics him probably doesn't but just dresses for the vibe
I must disagree about skateboarders being the first to wear baggy tech styled clothing and chain wallets. Snowboarders were doing it first. I was wearing big Simple brand snowboarding pants and a chain wallet in 1990 on the ski slopes, and I am pretty sure they were available a year or two before that. So unless we are talking about skateboarders wearing that type of gear earlier than 1988, than snowboarders did it first.
a lot of what he said is truth, but not about the resurrection of the punk rock look or whatever. only a few kids did that in the early 2000s. but he is right, skateboarding doesnt have its own culture anymore. corporations destroyed all youth culture
Early 90s skaters doing "their own thing" were still just taking the look from other skaters. How is that individualistic, but getting your look from musicians is not?
I love Marc, but I just don't feel that fashion is that important. It's what you do, not what you wear. Plus, skating to rebel means once the rebellion is over, you're done with skating too. I love skating for what it is, not it's social context.
@REGGIESILK-- Biebel is being authentic, if not original. That is the point that MJ is trying to make. "Who are you?". Skateboarders are lacking authenticity and it is watering down the culture.
I like how disgusted he is.. fucking dope cause you know he's really meaning what he's saying. You gotta respect that. And I agree what the fuck happened to Skate style, from being the rulers of all 90's fashion by just being ourselves to looking like the fucking Ramones with tight jeans and the the whole wack neon bright shit movement to fuck I don't even know what fools are doing now... bring back the OG Vato Rat style. That was the truth. That was from the bone ...
Its about how you skateboard and how you act, not about how you dress. Its not the 90s anymore. I sure don't give a fuck about skate "fashion" or whatever you want to call it
your probably one of those dudes who wears diamond supply and truck fit like a hype beast who wants to get sponsored.. know your history and roots kid it reflect on who you are as a skater..
It's alright to get influenced by someone else's fashion, but when you are completely copying every single thing about them... Then it gets a little weird. You need to be true to yourself in some extent.
Please everyone buy the vintage seledge denim underpants. The must have to rock your sweet keister. Also the herding boots will get you laid. Just ask Sofia Vergara
I understand MJ's frustration. I started skating in the early 2000's and today, the fashion that all of the skaters have makes me cringe so fucking much. Like, can a person be any less of an individual? The silly little bobby hat.. The pants that don't even reach your ankles.. Oh, what do you know? Every skater at the park is dressed that way.. What's the bet you're going to carve around and do a 180 no comply? Bingo. I see his frustration. Everyone's a duplicate today. And it's disappointing because there is no innovation. No hope for the future.
Espacio Fantazma there’s always going to be innovation. It’s just not going to be seen immediately. But the difference between now and back in the early 2000’s and before, UA-cam wasn’t a thing. It’s easier than ever to get exposure.
+atheosxgaming besides the fact that everyone can do whatever he wants and blah blah blah, there were times when clothes in skateboarding were REALLY ridiculous, trust me
tom penny didn't change. lol still rockin the giant pants today
When Marc said the thing about when a skater sees a non-skater "rock their shit" they are over it I started dying laughing! Thats so true!
i think we as skateboarders take ourselves way too seriously wear what you want if that follows a trend then fuck it wear it cause you want to, skate what you want don't spend time thinking about if you are following a trend or not. by doing this you turn skateboarding, the most fun shit in the world into a minefield of sorts where everyone is trying to avoid stepping on a landmine of ridicule.
respect

you must work in IT
As someone that skated in the early 90's and still does I see what the kids are wearing now and can't help but cringe. Sure 90's skate fashion was our own thing but it wasn't/isn't a nice looking thing.
Hear hear
We must get back to the roots!!! "you rock it? I'm over it!
I like that skateboarding has at least a few voices of reason left, Marc is one of them.
fool has been skatin for a long ass time he knows his shit
Marc Johnson made some great points in this video. I see the same shit when I go to skateparks all the time. Everyones starting to get stylish haircuts and wearing Nike sb/ Adidas with chino pants and its really fucking weird. Its like star wars clones or something
Very insightful I look forward to seeing more stuff from mj
Best interview I've ever watched..without a doubt

MrFingerboard223 Basically, you should just like what you like and say "fuck you" the rest of em.
I always have to listen to David Bowie after i watch this
How do you get the longest most epic part in one of the sickest skate videos ever produced? Alcohol, lots and lots of alcohol. Lol, that guy is so fucking rad, he just did whatever it took.
Thank you for posting the skatemag!
he is the Voltaire of skateboarding
Holy shit, he took the words straight out of my mouth at that last part. I was in awe, he is a fucking genius, seriously.
Arguably the most intelligent pro skater out there
damn i could watch him being interviewed for hours!
Dang he hits some serious points that seem to be lost on most "skate culture" now. Big ups to the MJ
I love you
He spoke such truth gotta luv marc

Lol had my uncle in it , RocAFella did have a skate team . Let's link up Marc Johnson !
love to hear chris cole talk about his transition from baggy clothes to tight clothes
I remember people didn't know I skated in high school because I used to always draw comics and anime. I wore dragon ball shirts and whatever haha. The first time people saw me wear a "vans" shirt and shoes. People assumed I was a poser. Well since mainstream has already taken skateboarding away we have to just move on. Scooter kids are the only ones who got it right i guess.
+Rodney Suck woah thats crazy haha

You are an amazing person. Thank u
09:20 That's real talk Mr. Johnson.
Where's the autobiography on this fuckin guy! Mj is an OG and 1 of a kind!
When skateboarding was its own style, it wasnt cool. Now its cool so it will never have its own style again.
viciousKev May i know your age?
White OG 32

MJ is very compelling. I get where he is coming from.
I love you Mj!
Girl & Chocolate have always been the frat boy club in skating. I cant believe everyone else on here hasn't noticed. Livin in a rap video...brandon biebel 10 years later still tha same.
You couldnt have said it better.
Real talk.

Makes me wish Marc was a 9 club co-founder / co-host
Makes me wanna kiss you
Marc for President

We’d hate seeing anyone with DC Vans Etnies et cetera

Damn Marc is smart as fuck!!!

yeah marc, youre destroying our environment.
Keyus Itllpannus this was sarcastic.
I understood your sarcasm thanks bro
talks shit on mainstream for whole video. joins adidas
I love Marc, but I just don't feel that fashion is that important. It's what you do, not what you wear.
Plus, skating to rebel means once the rebellion is over, you're done with skating too. I love skating for what it is, not it's social context.
If everyone is wearing the same stupid shit at the skatepark, then yes, fashion is somewhat important..
fuckin marc. love that dude
Mj be spittin
@REGGIESILK-- Biebel is being authentic, if not original. That is the point that MJ is trying to make. "Who are you?". Skateboarders are lacking authenticity and it is watering down the culture.
marc knows
I like how disgusted he is.. fucking dope cause you know he's really meaning what he's saying. You gotta respect that. I don't get it what are you mad about?
Its about how you skateboard and how you act, not about how you dress. Its not the 90s anymore. I sure don't give a fuck about skate "fashion" or whatever you want to call it

5 hours to land a trick? damn
+tra789 me, you and 99.5% of the people here wouldn't land it in 5 decades
I read that as "5 hours to land a trick? damn, that's commitment."
Not "5 hours to land a trick? damn, this guy sucks."
Let it go Marc, you think to much, if everyone would stop arm motion after landing, everyone would be like you ;)
marc johnson is so good but hes really out of touch
+Will Johnson How so?
Please everyone buy the vintage seledge denim underpants. The must have to rock your sweet keister. Also the herding boots will get you laid. Just ask Sofia Vergara
half the video is about clothes... great.
Marc skates beautifully, but really, five minutes complaining about skate fashion?
I understand MJ's frustration. I started skating in the early 2000's and today, the fashion that all of the skaters have makes me cringe so fucking much. Like, can a person be any less of an individual? The silly little bobby hat.. The pants that don't even reach your ankles.. Oh, what do you know? Every skater at the park is dressed that way.. Hated chain wallets lol
I wish he would just stop talking, it was so much better when we only knew skating by styles, tricks, and location.
people wearing certain clothes... omg who the hell even cares.
+atheosxgaming besides the fact that everyone can do whatever he wants and blah blah blah, there were times when clothes in skateboarding were REALLY ridiculous, trust me
Kook
you are totally grabbing from hipsters in a low key way
ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ
Heeaaaa , thats fucking garbage!!!
