Being a bit older than Putin, I lived through similar historical events in real time. The creation and destruction of the Berlin Wall. The Cuban missile crisis. Vietnam. The movements against the spread of "Communism" in the Western Hemisphere, which led to oddities like the invasion of Grenada, and the overthrow of elected governments in several countries. All the while propping up vicious dictatorships. And we were the good guys! And as far as being united, the attack on the WTC probably was the last time we were close to being united. Because that led directly to the invasions of Afghanistan (arguably necessary, but horribly botched, as usual), and the totally unnecessary invasion of Iraq.

Jared is one of the premier commentators on film and story today. Sadly underappreciated. I hope you, sir, get the recognition you deserve... hopefully sooner rather than later so I can consume more of that sweet, sweet content 🤤🤤

I totally agree, he is underappreciated. Although I'm not sure if being more popular is what he is going for. One of the reasons why he left wisecrack, as far as I understand, is because it got too big and went corporate. If he were to get that big as a content creator maybe he wouldn't be that happy with it. Maybe what he wants is a smaller and more nich community that enjoys his work like the one he is building now with us. But hey, what do I know. We just agree that he is great and want the best for him.

This resonates with something my dad’s said on multiple occasions concerning Russia: the EU and UN need their boogie man.

To be honest Jared, what makes the entire thing really scary is i think a lot more people are aware of this than they are letting on and are doing this anyway because they would rather let the world get pushed to destruction than admit they were wrong. Even if the hill they die on gets nuked, only victory afforded to them is they stuck to their guns, down to their last atomized whimper...

I think they do a good job of pointing out the xenophobia being aimed at Russians broadly in America and abroad at the moment, which, frankly makes me really uncomfortable.

Well to be fair, 80% of russians support the war and genocide, so there is nothing wrong with hating fascists and terrorists

Honestly the episode was a love letter to Generation X.
I understood every single reference in that episode. And I haven’t laughed that hard in quite a while.
For me it was beautiful episode to behold.

Growing in the 80s, I remember movies about nuclear war, music videos about nuclear war, going to the library and watch books about the nuclear war, mi biggest fear was the nuclear war and living very close to a nuclear target didn’t help, but the music, the over the top movies of the 80s, the sense of things can change for the better… now it’s like there is no hope, but maybe is just me.

I'm Ukrainian. On 24th of february I left my city of Kyiv to drive my wife, her mom and grandma, my relative and my cat through a 24-hour traffic jam, pondering if I'll have enough gas to not get stranded in the middle of nowhere and if I'll face a russian occupation in hiding or with a rifle in my arms.
After we made it to Lviv, on day 3 we got used to the air sirens. Knowing we have it good, compared to half of the country.
My wife's ma and grandma left the country while the rest of us stayed to volunteer, look for jobs (I worked in the film industry prior to the full scale invasion).
Being a huge fan of South Park, in second week of march I felt like I could watch anything other than the news, so I decided to try and watch the "New Cold War" episode. First time in my life I could not stomach a south park episode and I fast forwarded the second part of it.
I felt like the episode and it's story were developed prior to the new full scale russian invasion. Today I finally watched your video about the episode.
I really liked your characterisation of Putin though. Problem is that the "Mcluhan's ocean" in which Russian citizens swim is constructed from wet dreams of russian greatness, restoration of the former USSR in a new form and a reformed russian "Big brother" among the "brotherly nations". And the "brotherly nations" who had their share of this "love" and don't want it anymore - get invasion, genocide, rape, death and a complete dehumanization in a propaganda smear campaign which compares the entire nation to nazis.
The amount of national support Putin gets for his invasion and war crimes is ridiculous.
The war we experience here in Ukraine is far from "cold". The South Park episode fails to acknowledge that longing for former "greatness", striving for "simpler times" where you don't need nuance to figure out, who is the "bad guy" and can solidify around the idea of defense - is a societal cancer, which doesn't limit itself to the U.S. borders only. Continuing the metaphor, while U.S. society tries it's best to beat this cancer - in Russia it has evolved into something way more despicable and deadly, where the majority revels in the audacity to conduct a "special military operation" in a neighbour state amids their leader paraphrasing "blood and soil" excuses for it, and those few, who openly protest the invasion get up to 15 years in prison.
I think Parker and Stone where skeptical of the idea that Russia is a real threat to the european safety and stability, while they were creating the episode before the invasion. And I think while they can mock the U.S. nostalgia for cold war aesthetics, they undermine the real reasons many where worried about Putin's behaviour before the invasion. As for the parents of the russian kid in the episode, I wonder, what would these characters think about Putin and russian invasion into my country. The dressage competition, in my opinion, was a poor concept for the episode and provided easy commentary on themes, which had little to do with the real discourse on what should be considered an appropriate reaction to war, the scale of which was last seen in 20th century.

In Québec we have a dish called a Poutine. Since Putin is spelled Poutine in french, some restaurant changed the name on their menu in support of Ukraine...

Honestly these sanctions are just blessing
For the longest time people in Russia were talking about the fact that we need our own productions and become independent of the west but never had the guts or will to do that
Now we have all the western technologies and our resources and making our own version of petro-dollar
    Thanks, Biden!

Damn Jared, this is one of your most insightful observations yet (and that’s saying something, you’ve made some brilliant observations in the past).
I personally wonder at times if capitalism and indeed human progress in general can persist without the notion of a “big bad” enemy.
Our media has informed our human psyche for so long that we are often caught unaware of how the attempts to force a clear overly simplistic narrative by various media outlets influence the way we look at each other, ourselves, and the world at large.
Is it possible for humans to accept that in order to find a peaceful harmonious world we must do the hard work of humanizing and empathizing with those that narratively speaking are our opposites, our enemies? Or are we simply doomed to an endless cycle of defining our identities by our conflicts with others?
