  • Here Lisa Aitken and Charles Hooper describe how they have created a Forest Garden - an open woodland ecosystem using a range of trees, shrubs and plants for harvest. They share their joint passion for horticulture, self-sufficiency and their desire to work with the land to leave a lasting legacy. They talk us through the design process which includes seven layers of growth with the aim of cultivating the space available to increase biodiversity. Lisa and Charles point out the importance of understanding the condition of the soil, of growing plants for sun or shade in relevant areas, as well as the bonus of having accessible water on site - all with the reassurance that gardening knowledge will increase over time, just as the forest garden will grow and thrive, providing fruit, vegetables, nuts and more for years to come. www.forestgarden.info/ An Adliberate film www.adliberate.co.uk for WoodlandsTV www.woodlands.co.uk/tv

Tam McDonnagh mmmmm not sure on second thoughts. If you mean the treadle lathe episode I think this guy is about 15 years older but looks similar.

This is the opposite of a forest garden. These people have no idea what they are talking about. The #1 aspect of a forest garden is not turning the soil, not bringing in amendments, etc. The basic element of a forest garden is FUNGUS. Sheet mulching followed by wood mulching over any ground is the basis of a forest garden. They people are just making a garden with trees and shrubs - aka a Country Estate garden. These people are literally just talking out of the side of their head. They have Zero Understanding. Find a better video.

Everything sounded good until they said "15 years". Bloody hell, I need food ASAP.

@@dualpisces6413 15 years... that is why the saying exists "The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The next best time is today."
So plant some trees today so someone can be thankful in 20 years. Then in 20 year you can look back and smile. :)

I was surprised by the digging too, but I suppose there is more than one way to start, even if this is uncommon. Also wonder if perhaps it's maybe still quite a young forest garden, which is why it still looks rather open. I hope in time they reduce the amount of grass though.
Try this list I have collected of Forest Gardens in UK and other temperate climates, it might be more what you're looking for:

@@dualpisces6413 I think 15yrs is an exaggeration tbh. Fruit bushes and herbaceous/groundcover can be productive in the first year (autumn raspberries, herbs,...) or two. Fruit trees on dwarfing rootstocks maybe 2-4 years to fruiting. Many people plant annual veg in between while the forest garden establishes. We're between 3-7years in to making a forest garden in our back garden (started slow with a baby etc) and we're getting a nice succession of fruit (which is what I chose to concentrate on) already, which will build hopefully. And it's so much less work than things I have to restart every year like tomatoes.

Interesting thanks for posting, would you have any resources on how to start a forest garden correctly?
