// ABOUT THIS VIDEO //
For comparison, more than 1 million travelers went to Jungfraujoch*, more than 840,000 went to *Grindelwald First*, and the Harderbahn traveled up and down from *Interlaken to Harder Kulm more than 825,000 times in 2023!
…But this place has a cable car that can transport just 8 people, *or 1 cow*, at a time.
WHERE IS THIS HIDDEN GEM?
It’s perched just above Lauterbrunnen Valley!
Also called “the armchair of the Bernese Oberland” because of its cliffside position.
WHAT TO DO HERE
First, enjoy the beauty of the Swiss Alps - there are stunning panoramic views from this spot!
Second, go hiking. There are trail options in nearly every direction, but we suggest our favorite, which leads to a waterfall, lake, and mountain restaurant.
And of course, eat! With a few different off-the-grid restaurants, you’re sure to satisfy your taste buds with traditional Swiss food.

Thanks to your informative and entertaining videos, we booked 4 nights in Widerswil in July at an AirBnB and are compiling a list of things to do. Much appreciated. Greetings from Palm Springs, CA.
How fun! We hope you have a fantastic few days here!
Take the train to Schynige Platte. Take the first train of the day if you can get up early. The Panorama trail is stunning & the flower meadow will be in full bloom in July. So much colour.
Very nice! Switzerland is amazing 🤩
It really is a special place!
Just visited Switzerland and Jungfrau region back in Oct. So much to see and do and it's all beautiful. Already planning another trip for next year!
Woo hoo that you're already planning to come back again! There are endless places to discover here :)
I'm headed to Switzerland in Jul 2025 and I just bought your 7 day guide for the Jungfrau region. Browsing through it I must say I'm pretty impressed (I have already binged your UA-cam videos 😆). Very well laid out and should make navigating my time there much easier. Only problem now is... should I add this 'hidden spot' in? Hmmm... We shall see. Anyway, wanted to give you guys a plug since the guide is already proving so useful in my planning!! Keep it up!!
Thanks for the kind words about the guide! We're so glad you found it helpful!
Your videos brought me to Jungfrau, thank you so much!
It depends on your interests! If you did a loop hike from Isenfluh or Sulwald, it's much easier to have a car so you can come/go whenever you'd like. Of course if you hike to Mürren or Saxeten, then you'd likely use public transport. And the road has very few cars on it, so we think people could drive it safely!
This was my final hike in the area and was so beautiful. I just wanted a quiet day exploring away from the crowds and this turned out to be perfect
What a perfect choice for a quiet last day in the region. So glad you enjoyed it here! :)
I guessed it! 😜 I think I put this down as somewhere we want to go next summer. I did go there with my uncle and aunt when I was 10 and I remember the cute cable car.
We definitely want to try out the bikes - I know my teenage boys will love these! Some great advice about the bus timings - we’ll need to be aware of this!
I wondered if you would have guessed this! Love that you were here as a boy...it probably hasn't changed much! Those trottibikes were the best ones we've done in Switzerland, so your teens would definitely like the thrill. (But for real, you need to use the brakes...make sure they know that and that you trust them to actually use the brakes, haha!)
Aaargh! This is MY secret spot! 3:16 This is a sort of self-serve affair, when you get to the top you need to do two things: (1) push the _white_ button (this unlocks the door), (2) close the cabin door behind you when you leave. If you don't do that, you'll be banned from Switzerland for 20 years. 5:34 I got lost doing this hike once. Got "rescued" by a couple of locals who gave me a ride back to Isenfluh. They told me they'd just come back from San Francisco. Which is where I lived at the time - small world 🙂7:15 Thanks for the suggestion! Looks fantastic. BTW, there is a path from Lauterbrunnen to Isenfluh, about 30 minutes' hike. Go up the main street a bit past the Coop, turn right, walk under the Grütschalp cable car and continue up. This used to be the bus road to Isenfluh but I'm told sometime in the 1980s a big storm damaged a portion of it so they built a new access road which the PTT buses use now. But the old road is still perfect for walking. So if you miss the last bus down from Isenfluh (at 17:13 last I checked), it's no problem to walk back down.
Love that you've been here and enjoyed your time as well! It's such a fantastic spot. That walk from Lauterbrunnen is closer to an hour, but it's still a good walk...especially if you miss the bus ;) Hope you get to come back and visit again one day!
@@AplinsintheAlps I think I mentioned before that Albert Einstein used to stay in Isenfluh (and Mürren) when he was working as a patent clerk in Bern (before relativity). He would first hike with his buddies from Bern to Thun(!) and then (I guess) take the train. A few years later Tolkien visited the valley.
So many incredible people have been here!!
Forgot to add: this may be of interest to the more daring types: during non-winter months a mountain bike trail is open between Grütschalp and that road that connects Isenfluh and Lauterbrunnen. It's a bit involved but I've seen Swiss old ladies riding it (but then old Swiss ladies are indestructible).
Thanks for sharing!
😂👍
Absolutely love this scenery!! Thank you for the video 📹 ☺️
Have y'all done a video explaining about how y'all decided to move there? How much more expensive is it to live there than the states? If someone like me is a 100% rated veteran and doesn't want to lose their monthly income from the VA can they move there full time without being a citizen? I'd like to know these things. Also do the majority of people where you live speak English? I appreciate your videos btw. I have some to catch up on. I liked the video and am subscribed ❤❤❤
So glad you enjoyed seeing this beautiful place! :)
We haven't done a video on moving to Switzerland because that's not really our focus or expertise. We both have dual Italian citizenship so we live here on our Italian passports (and not our American ones). So we're not familiar with how you could move here.
And yes, many people in the area speak English due to tourism, but our local friends mainly just speak Swiss German.
Lovely video!! Hope to visit the Lauterbrunnen area in 2025. Thank you!
Have a blessed Merry Christmas! 🙏❤️👍🏼
Thank you! We hope you get to visit here next year too. Merry Christmas!
It was nice up there in at the beginning of September this year . Magic spot to take in the views. If you get the Chance to go up the Klausen pass, you should stop when yo see the Clock painted on the Rock and sit on the Seat for 2 . looking down towards the tiny doll's houses and the Stauber wasserfall. I hope you see it, I will be having my lunch there in the coming September 2025 again
That sounds amazing! We drove the Klausen pass back in 2020 and went to the Stauber waterfall, but we had no idea about the clock on the rock!!
We love your channel. We are visiting in April 2025. Out table agent is pointing us to stay in Zurich and travel down south towards Interlaken. We wanted to hub in Interlaken and see that region.
Do you do guided tours? Or is there a way to link you up with our travel agent to help us. We are both not really thrilled with what we have been presented.
Zurich is about 2-2.5 hours one-way from Interlaken by train. So if you're wanting to explore this region, we don't recommend staying in Zurich. Unfortunately we don't have the capacity to offer guided tours or travel consultations, but we do have done-for-you travel guides that you (and your travel agent...) might find helpful! www.aplinsinthealps.com/guides/
We hope you get to craft an Swiss itinerary that truly gets you excited to visit!
Switzerland 🇨🇭 is amazing 🤩 you will love it! Enjoy your stay!
Curious if you offer any travel planning assistance?
Thanks for asking Rodney! Unfortunately we know longer consult or offer custom trip planning. But you can check out our digital travel guides (which contain all our best recommendations) at aplinsinthealps.com/guides
Thank you for an extremely interesting video. But I disagree with your point suggesting that for 'flexibility' people should DRIVE to Isenfluh. If you do that, you loose the flexibility of being able to choose 'a circular tour hike', either via (say) Grutschalp or Saxeten. There is also the point that it is perhaps not wise for people used to the wide and largely straight roads found in the USA to drive up twisting mountain roads in the Alps. It is surely much better to leave the driving to bus drivers who drive the same twisting roads day after day!.
In which month the shorts of video taken
On my way to Paris from Munich, I will be in Switzerland for a few days. I will reach Zurich on April 25th and depart on May 1st. I want to do GE and spend some time in Lauterbrunnen. Currently, my itinerary goes like Lauterbrunnen and 27th to Zermatt and 28 GE up to Chur and from there to Zurich and explore there and May 1st morning to Paris. Is this ok?
There are some great spots off the beaten path in the Zürich area! You will love it!
Wow. Great video. The Long hike is something i would do, but i dont think my parents would make it. They a comming again in Aug. I cant make it till the first week in September. I hope for good weather. I love the mountain bikes. Defanatly want to try them. Where do you rent them?
I was there this September and the weather was around 28 c when i arrived and stayed around the mid 20's all week :)
Thank you! You can grab a mountain scooter and helmet at the station in Sulwald, and then you drop them off and pay for them when you reach Isenfluh (at the bottom).
September is one of our favorite months here in the Jungfrau Region!
@@AplinsintheAlps Thanks. dont know if i told you Last years Swiss national day in Interlaken was one of my favoraite experiences. i cant make it this year but I will be back maybe 2026
National Day is so fun! Hope you do make it back in 2026!!
I've been going to the Jungfrau area for over 40 years and I always wondered what was up there.
Wow, if you're familiar with the area then you'd probably really enjoy the quiet atmosphere and stunning views from here! It's amazing how much you can see in the Jungfrau Region from this spot.
I know a guy who lived in Lauterbrunnen all his life (40+) and when I told him I was going to Niesen, he said: "Never been there" 🙂Met a local lady (same age) on a trail around Wengernalp once, she said it was her first time there. So you fit perfectly!
I'm definitely putting this on my trip for next year! A shame about the helicopters, I assume they were flying concrete up the valley.
Fantastic! The helicopters do loads of work in this area, from tourist flights to restocking mountain huts to delivering construction materials to rescue missions. You never quite know what they're up to! :)
There is a new construction going on: replacing the cableways between Stechelberg, Mürren, and Schilthorn. There are interesting videos on YT showing the progress by the manufacturer Doppelmayr-Garaventa (English subtitles available). Also, skiing accidents make the helicopters very busy.
One of the best run, affluent nations in the world
That's Switzerland
Where on Google Maps is the scooter bike run you did going to Switzerland in April and I would love to do that.
Just spent a week in the Jungfrau region with my wife and now I want to go back :'(
So glad you got to experience the beauty of the Jungfrau region! Hope you get to come back soon.
Keep in mind only 4-5 month of the year is the weather like this.
That's true! The Summer season in the Swiss Alps is from June-August, but possibly May to October depending on the weather!
Is it Gimmelwald? Is it Gimmelwald? Please don't be Gimmelwald....don't let the secret out....wait did *I* just let the secret out?
Haha, nope, not Gimmelwald! :)
We will travel 2 adults and 2 kids ,we will arrive in Geneva , zermatt, spend 3 days in the jungfraujoch area ,Lucerne and we will return for Zurich , which swiss transportation do you recommend ..? Thank you😊.
