Me and my friends always crack up laughing at this scene cause the Turkish prosecutor, at around 00:30, just randomly sounds like hes saying ¨DOO-DOO DOODLE-DOO!¨ when he points his finger up in the air.
It was great filmmaking not to have any subtitles for any of these scenes. It really adds to the tension. Billy's life is hanging in the balance and he and his dad (and we the audience) have no idea what's being said.
My Father RIP once said something that was so true. It's one thing to be in a foreign country but when you are on Trial and you don't understand what they are saying , it's very frightening.
I think that The Lawyer looked at Billy as a Spoiled American who disrespected Turkey with The Drugs. I wish they had subtitled what he said. If Eric Braeden hadn't played Victor Newman on The Young & The Restless he would have been good. Did you guys ever hear the story about the Three Australians who tried to smuggle Heroin out of Thailand and got caught and got sent to a Thai Prison, they were eventually sent back to Australia to complete their Sentences but they were to put it mildly a wreck and couldn't say much during their Interview.
The world is now looking at Turkey. We are called the drug supplier of the world. Stories about us are in newspapers and on television every day all around the world. The time has come, your honor, to alter this image before we find ourselves isolated and morally ostracized by the rest of the human race. We must alter this image by punishing not only our own drug smugglers, but by handing out foreigners who infest our culture with their depravity ungodly and behavior. We must start now by sentencing this American, Vilyum Hi-yes (Billy Hayes), to the maximum sentence for smuggling, to be held up to the light of the world as an example of Turkish justice and its intention to halt the drug trade once and for all. I ask the Court therefore to sentence Vilyum Hi-yes to life imprisonment.
We are called home and supplier of heroin. Everyday we see news against us all around the globe about this issue. Honoroble judge, it is time for us to act to insure world would not turn against us. In order to change the attitude towards us, we need to charge those foreign criminals like what we do to our hashish smugglers and likewise we must continue doing so towards godless criminals who commiting pervesion and curropting Turkish culture, tradition, customs. By doing so we are going to deliver the ultimate respond which is necesary for the sake of Turkish justice. Firstly BU(this), American William Hazes must face the max punishment for his smuggling crime. This will proof of our justice system's rightousness and our determination to end hashish smuggling. Because of that, I am asking from the high court to charge William Hazes to aggravated life imprisonment.
