    I was in a exchange program in the UK about ten years ago, and in my experience British people were some of the nicest people I've met. They are more reserved and can be very private, but everyone was extremely polite and friendly.

    The "rude" stereotype comes from the fact that being polite is not the same thing in every country
    Im french and I've done thing things that are very weird/rude in the US and the UK but that are being polite in France

    I'm an American and there's one British stereotype that makes me offended for the Brits - that's the one about the British having bad teeth. I don't know why this upsets me so much, but when I hear someone say it I get defensive of the Brits.

    • @ethelmini
      @ethelmini 6 років тому +4

      It'd be interesting to see where that got started. It could be the Brits they met were sailors who'd suffered scurvy or actually true from when Britain was consuming lots of cheap sugar from the West Indian colonies. I reckon it's most likely from the film industry, where the actors in British films often came via theatre and weren't as subject to the cosmetic values of Hollywood.
      The truth is we have some of the healthiest teeth, but less cosmetic dentistry.

    I haven't travelled to the UK, but we did spend a few weeks in the US a few years ago when my BIL was there. We found people to be very friendly, and I never felt like that was fake. We also found the food a fascinating object lesson. American food is way sweeter than Aussie food, and there is way more processed food-like options. Our food is almost always sweetened with cane sugar (because we grow it in abundance), whereas American food is largely sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, which I would avoid like the plague. We also found the serving sizes in the US to be over the top, enormous. Our family of five was usually able to only order 3 meals.

    • @AndreaHeckler
      @AndreaHeckler  7 років тому

      Really interesting observations, thanks for sharing! I forgot to mention the serving sizes, but yes they do tend to be really big in the US. We also highly encourage taking home leftovers in a doggy bag, which I've found much less common in France and the UK, so I guess it's good that portions tend to be smaller here :)

    Speaking as an American I feel like Europe and other parts of the world speak more fluently and polite than Americans. Some Americans, not all, but some use slang more commonly. Its funny, but once I watched this video of British robbers trying to rob a bank. When the alarm went off and the door locked they said" excuse me, but could you please open the door?" That was so more polite than an American robber lol.

    • @Rogue136
      @Rogue136 7 років тому +1

      A similar example is Quebecois French vs Traditional French. Quebecois has alot of slang to it. I think the worst English for slang though is the Scots and the Irish.

    • @AndreaHeckler
      @AndreaHeckler  7 років тому +2

      😂 That's an interesting observation! Maybe the reason Americans use slang and casual terms more freely is because there's less of a barrier between strangers? I would definitely say Americans tend to be less formal :)

    • @GameFreak7744
      @GameFreak7744 7 років тому +2

      Oh there's plenty of slang in England, trust me. xD

    • @jimsmith2902
      @jimsmith2902 7 років тому +3

      Buster, that must have been a comedy film - in reality a British bank robber is more likely to say "Oi, open the f***ing door, you c**t, or I'll blow your f***ing brains out!" :-)
      On more serious note, in the UK we use loads of slang when we're talking amongst ourselves, but, of course, it's best to avoid slang when talking to foreigners because they probably won't understand it: that includes when talking to Americans because, as you probably know, English slang/swearing and American slang/swearing are very different apart from a couple of very basic words.

      when was he in the UK!? must of been before the 90's as calling UK's food bad now is basically saying all food all over the world is bad! as you can eat pretty much anything here now. But a german has no place complaining about traditional british food anyway, as there's traditional food is just as bad! i went out with a German girl for 4 yrs who was from Ulm and it was a city where they still ate very traditional German. it was pretty awful and i was shocked at how behind they now were in what they sold in there supermarkets and restaurant's in comparison to anywhere in the UK.

    I think food in the US is so far to each extreme due to financial differences. Generally, richer individuals buy more fresh produce, organic, vegan, etc. For the many in poverty, however, the cheapest food is often prepackaged, sugary, or fast food. The reality is that these families simply cannot afford to eat fresh fruit of veggies everyday. In many communities, traditional grocery stores are also not available meaning that food must be purchased from corner stores which are often filled with unhealthy food. Although the majority of those living in the US wish to live a healthier lifestyle, for many that is just not possible at the moment.
    I just wanted to point this out as I find that many misunderstand and believe that 'Americans' *want* to eat unhealthily.

      Grace B sad truth

    • @julia.24
      @julia.24 7 років тому +2

      Grace B I agree. It's also necessary to point out that when you're constantly starving yourself or going days without eating food due to poverty, your metabolism drops and your body goes into starvation mode which means that less of what you eat can be used or burned off, helping you gain weight. Many poor people, especially parents of children, have days when they have either nothing or very little to eat, which when balanced with the lack of nutrition in the foods that are available to them, keep obesity rates high for people of lower incomes.

    • @graceb3081
      @graceb3081 7 років тому

      Potatoes, pasta, and rice are not nutritious. Plus, canned foods are packed with salt or sugar. Although it may not be the case where you live, as I have mentioned above, many low-income neighborhoods do not have access to traditional grocery stores meaning that they can't buy the fruits, vegetables, and meats you have mentioned. Putting that all aside, yes, I agree that cooking from scratch is often much less expensive. That being said, many parents in these situations simply don't have the time or energy to cook involved meals after working long hours, nights, and weekends to support their families.

    I love British food because it's definitely comfort food. I crave pies or roast when I'm there. I love the meat, mash potatoes, gravy and veggies. I feel like you don't see that in most American restaurants. I wish they served that and fish and chips in our bars/pubs.

    The food thing is way overblown. We have some fantastic raw ingredients. British beef, lamb, rose veal and free-range pork are all of exceptional quality and full of flavour. Scottish shellfish is among the best in the world. We also have great game such as venison, hare, rabbit, grouse, pheasant and squab all of which are readily available. The problem isn't British food but lazy British cooks.

    • @gavinkemp7920
      @gavinkemp7920 7 років тому +1

      the food thing is always overrated. the thing is british food is much less regionnalised than many other countries and since it european it seem much less exotique compared to food accrosse the world and so it stand out less. also a lot of food which is associated with a particular country shouldn't be (pan cakes or crepe breton, french fries). and everyone does banger and mash.
      good british food include baked beans, workshire puding, dumplings, stews, rost lamb and their nothing quite like a british sunday roste. on the desert front we have crumbles, the puddings so on and so forth. more regional ones cornish pasties, haggis.
      their is less of a food culture in england than in france for example, but i've almost always had lovely meal in the uk.
      one thing is true though british fast food is worst than french fast food, and english restorants are very expensive so not accesible to most but generally food in pubs is decents better than in french bar or caffe

    The friendliness thing is really interesting - I think Brits are one of the friendliest (and certainly most apologetic!) people when coming from other European countries, but of course coming from the US even Brits may come across as cold! And I imagine it's the same reason French people consider Americans to be 'fake friendly,' as they are just genuinely not used to people being so chatty with..everyone, everywhere! I'd say another factor is that Americans are typically a whole lot louder than the French, so the latter may also be taken aback by that and think it's all a show when it's not.
    Re the drinking culture, I definitely think the UK has a problem with binge drinking and being loud and sloppy (I mean that in a way of they are being disrespectful) on the streets when going back home, which you just don't see in France.
    Ps this is coming from a half American half Brit who's lived in England and now has been in France for nearly 2 years so bit of a mixed perspective haha.

    • @AndreaHeckler

    I think you are both being very kind. In the British sterotypes I expected Andrea to say that British people have crooked teeth, because we don't generally have orthodontic treatment as children/teenagers to correct them; that's the stereotype that my Australian and New Zealand friends most often throw at me. Of course, Cheryl has perfect teeth; I'm more stereotypical :-)
    The one that Cheryl was too polite to mention is the British stereotype of Americans being fat - OK Andrea (not fat) does mention "bad diet", but what we're really talking about here is fat people. Unfortunately, because, as Andrea mention's, America has exported its junk food to the world, we British are fast catching up in the fat stakes.
    The drinking one is, as we say, "a fair cop"; we do binge drink and public drunkenness is a very common sight in English towns and cities. It used to be just the men, but now its girls too; often it's girls who you see most wrecked because they go drink for drink with the boys, but because they are (usually) smaller, their blood/alcohol level goes higher. When I was young it was considered OK for a man to get drunk as long as they weren't falling over everywhere, but shocking for a woman to be drunk. Nowadays we are much more equal :-)
    To give you an idea how much we drink, if you don't already know, it's not unusual for a man on a binge to "hit double figures"; that means drink at least ten pints (20 "demis" if you are French).

    One of the top stereotypes about American's is also that they are so loud. Whenever you go to a bigger tourist(y) city like Munich, Berlin, Hamburg or Cologne and there are American tourists around you'll hear them before you see them lmao. Once stood in line at a Lush store and there were just two American girls a meter in front of me in the line and they entertained the whole store with their conversation

    • @jimsmith2902
      @jimsmith2902 7 років тому +2

      You could be right there; our (British) sense of humour is often sarcastic, which Americans tend not to get, and there are also significantly fewer things that are "taboo" in English compared with American - they can't even bring themselves to say "toilet" for heaven's sake!
      And we also swear more frequently and casually than the Americans do, which might strike them as being rude when for us it's just "normal".

    The problem with American stereotypes is that the US is so large and regionally diverse that most of them only refer to a certain sub culture within the country. As someone who has lived in the Midwest and the North East, you might as well be going from the U.K. to France in terms of how different the people there tend to be.

    All I know is the worst stereotype I came across between Americans and Brits was when I was in London years ago and out with a friend one night. A couple of guys/blokes came up to us on the street and the first thing they asked us was "Do you have a gun on you?"! i've never had a gun or held one in my life but unfortunately, that's the reputation Americans seem to have not only today, probably more than ever considering all the gun violence in our once upon a time great Democratic republic! Also, met a couple of Brits from Liverpool in Italy and could barely understand them because it's not the kind of English one hears in London! Personally, found the French rather rude towards Americans at the time, That's their reputation over the past several decades...even though a great many Americans like/love the French and French culture....Francophiles like moi as well as Anglophiles....anything British, also like moi! Think for the most part that too many Americans DO dress like slobs compared to Europeans...junk clothes along with junk food! When I was in Europe I wore a fashionable wardrobe because I was a professional fashion illustrator in NYC and wasn't going to be in Rome, London and Paris wearing sloppy clothes and a backwards baseball cap! lol Merci beaucoup....thanks for sharing~

    The cat in this video doesn't care about stereotypes :-) He is better than many humans.
    About how people in France will look at your sloppy clothes, it will probably depends on the place. II is more tolerated in countryside.
    About stereotypes : in France we have the stereotype that british people are very polite and their english sounds elegant to french ears whereas american english sounds more "rural". But Andrea's english doesn't sounds rural at all :-)
    About american who are overfriendly : I am very suspicious about this. Maybe I should not. I have the impression it is fake and that you want to sell something. I think french will have a neutral atittude the first time and will wait to know you better. The stereotypical big smile with white teeth can be assimilated to a shark mouth :-)

      It's definitely true that American salespeople are veeeery friendly 😜 But most of the time there are no ill intentions meant! Also, I totally agree that the kitty sets the best example. She's 100% chill about everything (except food and toys) 😸

      I think it's true that Americans put more emphasis on having straight, perfectly white teeth than many other countries, including the UK, which means you don't see "Hollywood teeth" as often. But the extreme examples of "bad British teeth" are just that...extreme! :)

      yes i agree , and after admit that when it comes to white teeth most countries are behind USA.

    Stereotypes need to be buried.
    Buried to a very dark place because people believe every single stereotypes that exist.
    Especially the British ones. Like "Oh yeah british people have bad teeth" you seriously thing that every single person living in the all of places of the UK has bad teeth? It's just unrealistic and annoying.

    Never heard British have the reputation to be rude, I think it's the other way around in Europe, we believe they are extremely nice & having lived in UK I confirm that fight to apologies first, quite hilarious though. Bad US diet top it up & it's exported around the globe today...

    • @jimsmith2902

      I would agree that we are generally very polite, to the point where it is sometimes ludicrous. I have seen a dog walk into someone and the person say sorry to the dog :-)
      It is changing though and younger people are much less polite than the older generation. And then, of course, there is the sub-species of Britons aged 18-30 that goes to Ibiza in their thousands every summer to spend two weeks permanently drunk/stoned. They are pretty rude :-)

    • @daaayum_gena

      That actually isn't true. I'm American and when I started going over to London regularly to visit my family and friends, they quickly corrected me when I referred to them as English. British = UK citizens due to the colonization that happened in order to for them to become that. English = family/ancestry rooted from England. It depends on who you ask.

    • @ethelmini
      @ethelmini 6 років тому

      There are cultural similarities, as well as differences, throughout the UK. I'd say the greatest differences are between Southern England and the rest, so British is at least as meaningful as English. Though the Welsh and Scots mostly identify as such over being British. Nobody in Britain considers themselves colonised, unless you mean immigrants from former British colonies identify as British because they're not ethnically English etc? I'm not sure that's true either, I'd suggest it comes down to which national sports teams you support, though on official government forms that ask for your ethnic identity, you're offered Black British rather than Black English, for example. That sense of Britshness really doesn't exist, immigrant communities are Bengali, Pakistani, Jamaican, Nigerian even Polish.... at the same time as being English or whatever. The whole lot are also British.
