- Recently, Disney Imagineers begun play testing their free-roaming robot at Disneyland.
Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development is developing a small-scale, free-roaming robotic actor that can take on the role of our similarly-sized Disney characters. Its tightly integrated design provides over 50 degrees of freedom in a compact platform that can walk, gesture, and emote in style. Using custom authoring tools that combine whole-body motion planning and traditional character animation, artists can quickly bring robotic characters to life with expressive motions and interactive behaviors. There are no immediate plans for use in Disney theme parks; however, a prototype in the form of Groot is being used to test unique traits, gaits and capabilities.

Am I the only who thinks a Pinocchio animatronic like this would be too perfect considering his story?
I would love if Pinocchio would dance and sing "I've got no strings" like in the movies.

Hopefully if the Judy model is able to be as flexible as it’s promising to be, Pinocchio would definitely be the next to focus on
Honestly, I'm a bit surprised that they didn't do that. Then again, licenced characters make more money probably.
Patience. This is a brand new technology - Groot has to shuffle so that Pinnochio can dance.
Can create a state of the art robot but can't create a wig for Starlord that doesn't look like roadkill.

You’ve no idea. I went on a DCL Marvel Day at Sea, and Star Lord looked like he sold used Hyundais in SoCal, it was so bad

While I always prefer face characters over costumed ones. The wig here is so bad and unconvincing I wish they would just hide star-lord behind his mask like they do with ant man

Definitely. Sophia The Robot and both of her sister model's are only 6 years old.But they're all about to be replaced by their upgraded advanced version, Project RIA.
This is really only the beginning for live character entertainment in the parks and across the world. really exciting to see where this goes in the future!

That’s honestly really impressive, definitely the future of interactive animatronics. Rather than a stationary animatronic on a ride, bring the animatronic to the guests. Clever.
Pretty fluid movement too, but hopefully this technology will evolve and the walking will get better and more convincing.
Groot is cute and all, but underneath that cute exterior lays a T-800. You've all been warned. 😏

The Groot looks so real….WOW !!
Imagine how this could transform existing attractions with free roaming animatronics. This could create a unique experience on every ride.
Might be a logistical nightmare to keep them charged and far enough away from the ride vehicles.

I love that the technicians / engineers / whatever on stage have outfits, too!
Cast members are always "in costume" aka in uniform. They are just wearing the uniform that cast members who are part of the ride wear, which is what the cast members part of this experience usually wear.

Watch Disney come out with an actual C3PO to wander around Galaxy's Edge during my lifetime. Or, even better, a walking Hatbox Ghost or Headless Horseman for the Halloween parties. I'd pay extra for that.
They already have the headless horseman! Hes in the frightfully fun parade. It’s a actual person and horse though

Then they could get real fancy with it and have smoke or flames coming out of the eyes and mouth of the pumpkin which can come on and off the shoulders and maybe even talk and if they do an animatronic horse they could give it glowing red eyes and have smoke come out of its nostrils. It could be amazing!

@@thebluetarp The newest movies bombed and there's only one tv show that is currently getting any kind of praise while people still rant and rave about the original trilogy. I don't think they'll stick with the "no vintage characters in GE" thing, especially now that they have Chewy who sometimes wanders the land. It's even easier with a character like C3PO because he's a droid and therefor ageless.

I can't belive that is a robot. It moves really smoothly the antithesis of what we think of as a robots jerky movement.
Still waiting on that free-roaming Wall-E that we were told was coming to the parks but never did.

Still a little rough on the movements, but this is still impressive as a whole that Disney was able to make a walk around animatronic. We've come so far and Walt would be impressed!

Maybe it's hard to tell in the video, but with the animatronic being that large it could be easy to picture a little person in there instead. Proportions might be different but still.
