I've been a farmer in kajiado for the last 5 years, and now an onion specialist. About pricing, I can advise one of have lower expectations because prices are not controlled in Kenya. Last year I was hit hard as a result of flooded onions from Tanzania. I had to sell my harvest at KES 35/ kg which was a loss for the entire project. But in 2023, I made good return throughout the year when prices averaged at KES 120/kg. This market is highly volatile so whoever desires to enter the venture must highly manage expectations on returns. Dryland farming needs utmost patience, passion and dedication. There's no quick money in this venture, but it's worth it.
A good and educative interaction on onion farming. Howver some key aspects were not captured especially after transplating. How frequent is the watering? How frequent do you spray, with which chemicals and how is the ratio of every chemical to water?
Starting seedlings in the soil can be quite a challenge especially with dumping off diseases , have you ever tried started seedlings in trays .It will save you time and unnecessary stress. Just from my practical experience.
