The hardest thing to learn when you first start working is boundaries and asking questions. Asking questions helps clarify their intentions and expectations so you know what's expected of you. If you're a high achiever, your expectations of you are usually much higher than the expectations of others. Clear expectations help you set boundaries for yourself to protect you and not get burned out. Learning to say no or thoughtfully provide timelines early on saves you a lot of pain later on. Law has crazy expectations but protecting you is important.

In my experience, NYC is not a dancing city unfortunately, but I will just dance and usually people follow. You are the main character, and your fun energy brings fun vibes and people join in or roll their eyes, but as long as you have fun, you're good

HIGHKEY agree that places are 10x better when people are out on the floor dancing! Our parents had it so good with all the dance clubs that existed in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Hey Leandra! I'll be starting my law school journey soon-ish, and recently I've come across numerous channels or resources saying BigLaw is terrible/they left legal practice/a legal career isn't worth it. I resolved that this was partly true and partly overstated due to selection bias- possibly corporate lawyers who enjoy their careers aren't on UA-cam saying so. Still, I was growing more concerned because I had always thought of myself as the type of person who would like BigLaw practice, but when everyone who's done it seems to hate it, you've got to take a step back. All that's to say that I felt a deep sense of relief (and being seen, in a way) @ 25:50 when you said "...we like NY BigLaw, I do think it fits me..." Obviously, there are lights and shades to every profession and everything, but it's encouraging to know that there ARE people out there who like the bottom line. I wish you all the best in the rest of your Summer Associate position & even more so when you get started as a full-timer! :)

As an autistic person the cues thing is so relatable. They likely weren't giving you any cues, so it's not your fault. Just know that any neurodivergent person is likely to feel like everyone knows something they don't, like there's some secret guidebook everyone but you has. Work is the thing that needs no cues, so we tend to overachieve in order to 'make up for' what we feel like we're lacking. Couple that with being neurodivergent women, it's a recipe for the most intense imposter syndrome ever. Good freaking luck bc this shit sucks ass, but knowing how your neurotype affects things is so helpful!! 🙃

Hi girlie! As a former biglaw associate I’m very glad to hear you talking about these things. re: finding a balance & boundaries. Working on this early will prove invaluable as you go along in your career. Please center your well-being first. The fear mongering is very real, people will tell you that you’ll get fired or you’ll be the worst associate or won’t get hours. This is simply not true and if it is, is that somewhere you want to work? As a black woman You will likely receive a harshness that other associates don’t receive, don’t let the get to you. You can hold high standards for your “me” time and still be an amazing associate. Not sure if you have a regular check-in with yourself practice but I would highly recommend something like that in a daily basis. (Before you check emails lol) happy to talk more offline & wishing you nothing but success.

Hi Toya! Thank you so much for this, it’s really nice to hear especially from someone who used to be in BigLaw. I’ve definitely been making it more of a priority to have “me time” before checking emails and trying not to sweat the small stuff and feel much more settled and comfortable. It’s an adjustment for sure

The pressure for perfectionism and not wanting to mess up or let the team down in your dream career can really disrupt your peace. It definitely comes with being a high achiever, as you said. I’ve found being less critical of myself in other areas of my life has also translated into my workplace. Your team is so lucky to have you 🤍

I summered at a big law firm and by the end of the summer I realized it was not for me. Now I’m working in a totally different type of law and I’m happy. I think summer is a great opportunity to really determine if you like big law. It’s difficult to imagine what it’s like, you do have to actually experience it to see if you really want it. I’m sure you will make the best decision for you! :)

Not sure if you've already explained this but do you have to pay for your own apartment while you are in New York and essentially paying two sets of rent?
