Karan Johar has said on multiple occasions that Shah Rukh can break down into tears very easily, the Kajol wedding scene in KKHH, the "bau ji teek kehte hain" scene in DDLJ, the Naina wedding scene in KHNH... No glycerin, just pure SRK.

The water scene is so special because before this Mohan never drank water from his village or anywhere else but only from his bottled water. He was not connected to his roots nd felt like experiencing the little things before the emotional rollercoaster happened just before this scene
I went India for the holidays, from England to there. Whilst I was there I went on this journey similar to this film of rediscovering what my country meant to me. Even my grandma said , you are just like SRK in Swades. Really hit home when I saw it again. GOAT film

I was lucky that I was introduced to SRK with My name is Khan, after seeing that movie it became impossible for me not to look for more movies of him and more movies from India. Technically thanks to SRK I am a fan of Indian cinema and thanks to him my family has seen many Indian films.

To me this scene encapsulates the feeling I always have about India , true from my childhood right up to , probably forever. A scene that continues to touch saw a raw emotion…from any movie…There’s another scene in the movie where he meets a farmer in a village lying in a bed…2 scenes that hit home raw…just raw feeling and emotions.
Also there are many great scenes in this masterpiece.. if only SRK acted in patriotic films these days 🥺..he is always ahead of time 💫

This is the first time Mohan (SRK) is not drinking bottled water in the movie. They’ve setup the scene well by showing SRK packing bottles of water for the trip and ending with it this scene where he allows himself to be ‘Indian’ again

I still remember that this very scene brought tears to the eyes of the 8 years old me watching this movie with my family in the theatres.When I'm watching it now again on this channel i feel what amount of emotional movie this was and what a performance SRK had delivered that it made an 8 year old's eye welled up who had no sense about movies then. This was the best cinematic expression of SRK - he did a great job in this movie. This movie crashed at the box office in 2004 but now people have realised how much ahead of time this movie was. I have watched this movie not less than 1000 times. During my college days this movie inspired me a lot. Great message and great music and songs. Great direction and screenplay. A Real movie. Real scenes . Real issues. Real people. Real emotions. Real music. Real expressions. Real us !! It was criminal to not give national award to SRK - he deserved this one. not a SRK fan though. He did a great job!

Shah just fake his laugh he has hard tym to laugh impromptu but he never fake tears he can cry at the drop of hat..discussed this in some interview I ll surely post clip if I get that interview
Director Ayan Mukerji (Brahmastra) was assistant director on Swades.
That's why he took Mohan Bhargav's character in Brahmastra. To pay his homage to Swades.

I come from a similar background that little boy was shown in this film. And i am dying to move out of this country. You guys don't realise the day to day problems we have to face. From sanitary to drinking water. You name it and we have seen worst than that. Specially for someone like me who has the concious if how other human being live in other countries and how they are treated there, and i ask myself this questions all the time and it will bother me until i get to live that life. This constant voice in my head making my mental health worse and love for this country is fading away.

What a symbolic moment. An all time for me. Mohan finally sees himself as part of the people, he accepts his place in the world. From drinking bottled water to drinking the water of his land, which everyone else was having. He is now connected back to his roots. There are many more subtle cultural things and behaviours related to water in here that makes this scene so emotional for me.

Till this moment in this movie he never drinks water like even Kaveri Amma offers him water but he never drinks it he only drinks water bottle till this scene... This is the scene where he drinks water for the first time it's where he embraces that yeah it's his country and he gotta do something for it..... He didn’t leave his career. It is understood that he quit his job in America to come back and work for a Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in India where he can work with NASA. He did this so that he can continue to work here and also make a difference in the country he belongs to.
If you notice, this character, carries bottled water wherever he goes, but in this scene, the plight of his countrymen breaks him and humbles him. Very good scenes and nicely executed.

This scene is more powerful because Mohan always drink mineral water from bottle and never drink water from outside. He was so moved by the boy selling water cups for living that he not only bought the cup but also drank fully from it without thinking of sanitary concerns with doing so. If I was the script writer I would have added after “Mohan drank fully from the cup” this also:
“(Mohan had never drank anything other than bottled mineral water before)”
You can never understand this scene without watching the whole movie, just watch it

I don’t know why some school of actors are obsessed with this “method acting”. It is not necessary for an actor to feel the emotions. If it looks real and emotions are conveyed then y does it matter if the tears are real or not.
