THK captain. I have been on FS for 4 years and have never seen such an amazingly simple tutorials. It helped a lot. Many thanks for your time that you have put in to this for us to learn for free. My deepest appreciations.
Fantastic aid for using ILS in MSFC, wish I had this 10 years ago when I started using MSFC98, with me it was very much trial and error. Thanks Captain.
Captain Wetterholm! You seriously rock! First time in 3 months, I have made history. I made my first proper ILS landing in WMKK on February the 28th! How? Thanks to your wonderful tutorial. It's amazing. But I still have to practice landing. :P Anyway, thanks again! ^_^
Thanks! This is first tutorial that really explains something about the ILS! I almost jumped down from my balcony because of those FSX lessons..that Rod Machado explains ILS in Cessna but not in Boeing. Had to take ATP lesson for about 100 times because I couldn't land ILS, couldn't find the horizontal line in Boeing. Thanks, now I know where the glidescope is in that damn plane :D!
thank you ever sooo much for such a well structured tutorial......you have answered so simply questions that I had re- this subject......thank you again!
The reason I'm asking is because I was doing a full IFR flight with ILS approach without using ATC, so basically I was doing it all manually without help from ATC for the approach. I believe when ATC contacts the aircraft when it wants to make the approach, the ATC guides the pilots for the approach with the heading and coordinates before reaching the final point of intercepting the localizer. I'm not sure if this makes sense in real world flying approaches.
I don't think you can resize individual instruments, but you should be able to intercept the glide path and line up way before if becomes critical. Also for a long final the Outer Marker is quite a way from the threshold and if you have seen and heard its indication then you are very close to the glide path
0.29 The localiser and glideslope have two beams each - the carrier frequency is the same but without two beams for each there is nothing to give instrument indications by comparison of beam strength if the plane is not on the glide path. However, that is more of ground radar importance than what the pilot needs to know.
Hey GLADIATOR 536. thanks alot for your help in operating the ILS. My landing has improved alot compared to before. Landed right on the centre line few times, but i've also realised that the ILS does not always point you towards centre line, so small adjustments are required. Once again thanks.
other remaining questions below. please get back on them. urgent Do i set the ILS frequency as well as the heading indicated in the briefing found using the kneeboard before takeoff or during flight? After tuning in the ILS frequency on the radio, as well as ensuring that NAV 1 is active do i also ensure that the 'ADF' button is active too? Is course "CRS" and the heading the same thing? i get confused when tuning the settings. thanks
in the simulator, for an ILS approach, its really simple, just enter your frequency and hit the APP button. in real life, its practically the same thing or sometimes pilots use the FMC. anyway, great video to explain this technique
@aadeshrana0 The runway number times 10 gives you the heading to within about 10 degrees. At around 3:40 in the video the buttons under your attitude indicator that give you GPS, radios, etc. one of those pauses and gives you a map and you can click on different airports and find the ILS frequencies and headings.
scroll down in the facilities available window when u click on a runway. It is mostly given at the last. All the runways are listed of that airport and infront of them are their respective ils frequencies and ils headings.
Tiger Direct has a GT overclocked for $130 and the regular for $120. The GTX is $150 for regular clock and $200 for overclock. If you plan on putting 2 of any of these in SLI you need to go to nvida and look under SLI to see what PSU's are compatible (I would suggest getting 700w or more, that is if your doing SLI). It really depends on: how big your case is, how much $ you want to spend, and if you want a single card or two card solution. The GT is great for small cases but not as fast as GTX
I'm missing something here. I was flying from Edwards CA. to Flagstaff AZ. The Flagstaff heading was 211. I set what I thought was 211 on my OBS dial. My KFLG was to my Northeast and my 211 heading took my plane Southwest away from my airport. Can you show us how the numbers on that OBS dial works. I was flying in circles. Also what all needs to be set? NAV? GPS? Also there's something to do with the correct altitude for the ILS to "CATCH" my plane? Please explain more.
Does anyone know if theres a way to zoom out the localizer on the HSI display? im trying to zoom it out so i can see where the localizer and CRS are going and to be lined up to the runway far away before starting approach.
when you say intercept localiser at angle of 30, do you mean when your turning? and when your intercepting glideslope from below, do you mean come from higher and descend?
BEST ILS VID OUT THERE!!!! i took down all the stuff i thought was important(almost everything) and it was awesome , i can finaly land a plane (in FS2004/FS9) without crashing xDDDD YAY!!!
Dear CaptWetterholm, I have Flight Deck 4, and thought that the ILS {was just Red square's placed in by having the game} I didn't know they were called ILS. I can land on the aircraft carrier off San Diego, Cal, but only with a Blue Angel, but I can't get the Hornet, or Tomcat to to keep on course, because as they get closer to the carrier, they want to fly away from the carrier, they go out of control. Thanks for the Great tutorial. Tom W.
4:08... in some cockpit panel there are two NAV.. one is a switch from NAV to GPS and the other is a NAV ticker above the HEADING ticker. which one does 4:08 mean ?
I tried landing using ILS, i have performed few perfect smooth landings right on the centre line. BUT i've noticed that ILS doesnt always point towards the centre line even when i'm on the correct approach with the APP button engaged, as ive landed away from the runway. can someone please tell me how this could be, what could i be doing wrong? thanks
im having trouble catching the glide slope... The pink dot shows up on the glideslope thing on the screen, but my aircraft dont stick to it.. Also localizer works FINE, just glide slope, any help?
If by commercial you mean paying passenger carriers, then ILS would be mandatory since they fly IFR most of the time, utilising the VOR display. Nowadays there is GPS and other landing system aids, though microwave didn't catch on in many places for practical reasons.
I am planning to assemble a new computer especially for FSX and I've selected the following hardware. Please advice! 1) EVGA nForce 780i SLI FTW motherboard 2) Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 (2.83GHz; 1333Mhz) 3) CORSAIR 4GB(2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 memory 4) Two EVGA GeForce 9600GT 512MB for SLI and 5) Windows Vista Home Premium.
Go to World, then Map. On the map page ensure that the ILS indicators are being displayed by checking that the 4th button to the right of the red and green buttons is green- the button just to the left of the button with the triangle on it. Then click on the green ILS marker line of the ILS you want to use. With it selected and shown in the dialogue box that comes up, click OK and then it will give you the frequency.
Let's say you are to the left of the localizer with a bearing of 180 degrees. To intercept the localizer at 30 degrees adjust your heading to 210 degrees and turn into 180 degrees as it moves to the center. When you finish rolling out, your bearing will be 180 degrees centered on the localizer. You can intercept the glideslope from above but it is much more difficult due to the higher rate of decent. Typically, intercept the glideslope from underneath.
After watching so many tutorials, i still cant land the plane using ILS. i'm missing few basic things out but dont no exactly what. Can someone please help and answer my questions. much appreciated. thanks Do i switch the NAV/GPS switch to NAV and press the NAV button too or just select the NAV switch?
I planning to include Winodws Vista Home Premium 64-Bit version. Wats the cost of of a 9800GT or GTX+ ? Does it cost nething around 180USD? And SMPS of wat power will it need 600W?
Hey "GLADIATOR 536" thank you so much for your reply. I will follow your instructions that you have given me when i play flight sim and will get back to you on how well the flight went.
Tower, ground, ATIS, and approach are all communication (talking) frequencies. When you double-click on an airport in the map view it brings up airport data like you see below: "San Francisco ATIS: 118.85 Ground: 121.80 etc... Runway Length ILS ID ILS Freq ILS Hdg 28R 11861 IGWQ 111.700 282" 111.7 is the ILS frequency for Rwy 28R at SFO and course is 282.
I don't know why but when I press the NAV button, the plane climbs... any idea why? NAV1 is tuned to the correct ILS frequency, course heading is set, but it climbs. Is the autopilot supposed to be on?
Very well done, Cap. Now...I wish someone could explain to me *how* I determine how many miles out I am, and how do I keep track of how close I'm getting? Thanks, isitwitha
It always depends on the aircraft, but if you are flying an airliner like the guy in the video was you should be landing at a speed of 140-150 knots. Hoped this helped and happy flying!!!
hello CaptWetterholm, just wanna ask if wats d correct flaps setting starting at 15m from the airport in a 777?and at 15m from the airport wats d correct speed (KIAS)?because everytime i will set it in 160Kias my nose goes terribly up..=( ur reply will be much aprreciated..=)
not bad! Here are some pointers, I think its good to use 2 Dimms (so you can add more on later) but if it's in your budget consider getting faster memory. And the other thing is the graphics cards. 9600's are good but in the world of graphics there already somewhat dated. Of course you have to look at your budget and see what you can afford. If you want to do a SLI configuration then I suggest a 9800gt/gtx (note the "GT" is a single slot and the "GTX" is a 2 slot). What's your psu and os bit?
ILS frequency is on your chart. You must look at a map and see for the runway what is the ILS (for example you are coming to runway 8R at airport SHMECK) so you look at the schmeck chart and find the frequency for that runway
This is very helpful video. I watched it several times. I have a problem I hope you can help me with. I'm using FS2004, I have problem with taxing knowing that I'm using only keyboard to taxi. I don't have any other instrument to control the aircraft other than the keyboard. I can't control the aircraft & it keeps drifting right & left!! Can you help me with this? Thanks.
You can't apply the simulation into an actual instrument airplane, but can definitely apply the fundamental of the ILS approach. It's exactly the same in real-world aviation.
A have a question: Where you can know the frecunecy of the ILS of any airport and in which radio of your plane you have to set it?? Thanks Great video 5 stars for you!!!!
Hey man i hope i can help with your question. He landed smoothly by making sure his glide-slope and localizer was right on point on his CDI, after that he let the auto-pilot fly him right to his approach and then he turned off his autopilot at 200ft ounce he was leveled with the runway. After that he slowly descended and made sure his back wheels touched the runway before his front wheels did, which is called flaring and it is a good technique. Hope this helped and happy flying!!!

After more than 20 tutorials, this was the best one I found. Now I completely understood.
Fantastic aid for using ILS in MSFC, wish I had this 10 years ago when I started using MSFC98, with me it was very much trial and error.
Thanks Captain.
I have seen a lot of videos covering the ILS system. This time, after watching yours, I hope I succeed on the landing.
Thank you for this very simple to follow but effective video. I haven't been getting my Flight Sim hours lately, & keep forgetting some procedures!

Many show these tutorials but yours is nicely done. The way it should be. Thank you!!
Thanks a lot CaptWetterholm, I really needed someone to show me how to do this, if I met you in person I would shake your hand!!!

if hit app in autopilot mode, will the plane auto glideslope, or does that have to be done manually?
@mateoflight140398 tienes que activar el NAV 1 o 2 de acuerdo a como lo tengas configurado y activar el AP
thanks for your reply capt^^, but how can i identify my maximum landing weight? wats dat for?

This is incredibly informative and educative...
its realy great but there is something i dunno and want your help !! How can i know the frequency to tune the NAV 1 ???
so the crss= cours always has to be the runeways number, right?
Very well done, Cap.
Now...I wish someone could explain to me *how* I
determine how many miles out I am, and how do I keep track of how close I'm getting?

Yeah so i have trouble with the speed of the plane, at what speed do you have to land and when do you have to throttle back for the landing?
It always depends on the aircraft, but if you are flying an airliner
like the guy in the video was you should be landing at a speed of
140-150 knots. Hoped this helped and happy flying!!!

Thanks, this answered a lot of questions!
Great video man! I understand this is not for real life but, can you please make a video about how to read approach plates? Thanks
Well explaine, nice, clear and precise informations.
Very informative.Thank you for this excellent video!
Very well explained, very good tutorial.
Outstanding Video Tutorial. 5 Stars. Great ;)
get charts, its also on the default map and GPS for FS

Excellent Video & Tutorial! Thanks!
do you also have to flip the DME switch??
Every Time I initiate ILS the plane fies the right heading but doesn't catch the glide slope I need help PLZ!!!
Thank you very helpful, please do a video on the catIII
Very good. Wonderful video.
Tack för denna mycket användbara video!
Jag måste bara fråga, hur många flygtimmar har du i FS? ;) Keep on rocking!
very very good video..help me understand alot thx man great job
BTW What is APP?
And how many percent gas do i have when i am descending from 33000 feet to land?
is the localizer guidance available in all commercial planes?
yes sir it is!!!

Thanks
Great video 5 stars for you!!!!
wow , nice landing at the end
I need to find something just like this but for the smaller planes
and how u get the ILS frequency u put
Thanks this helped me a lot.
Thank you very much for this informative video.
Hey Thanks for the tutorial! How did you landed so smoothly? Pls answer.
Can you make a tutorial for smooth landing?
Hey man i hope i can help with your question. He landed smoothly by making sure his glide-slope and localizer was right on point on his CDI, after that he let the auto-pilot fly him right to his approach and then he turned off his autopilot at 200ft ounce he was leveled with the runway. That video helped me alot thanks.
So is there a New Flight similator coming out soon? FSX?
Capt, Can't we use ILS with VFR?
What speed should I be landing on?
It always depends on the aircraft, but if you are flying an airliner like the guy in the video was you should be landing at a speed of 140-150 knots. Hoped this helped and happy flying!!!
thanks so much this helped me so much.
Verry good video,sir.
Thank you
thanks captn for your support
Thx m8, it helped me a lot ;)
Great Tutorial ...THANK YOUUUU!!
hey can you get that VFP for FSX??
