A very interesting story as to how music and lyrics have changed some people’s lives. Kavignar vaali frustrated about lack of opportunities in thamizh cinema as a lyricist, decided to call it quits for good and boarded a bus back from Chennai to his home town of Srirangam with all his bags and baggages. On his way back, the bus stopped in a small place for a tea break. There was this song from the movie Sumaithangi (1962) which was playing on radio in the tea shop. “Mayakkamaa Kalakkamaa” sung by PBS in this movie (“Manidhan Enbavan deiva maagalaam” was also from this movie). When Vaali heard this song, was clean bowled by the lyrics in that song (vaazhkai endraal aayiram irrukkum…vaasal dhorum vaedhanai irrukkum…yeadhayum thaangum idhayam irundhaal …irudhi varaikkum amaidhi irukkum…unakkum keezhayae iruppavar kodi…ninaithu paarthu nimmadhi naadu) which he felt was written exclusively for him and his current situation. Instantly he had a change of heart and mind, cut his journey short and took another bus back to Chennai…and as they say there was no looking back and thamizh cinema was lucky to get a great lyricist thanks to “Mayakkamaa Kalakkamaa”.
@@madzi89As Thala Dhoni would say...follow the process the results would take care of itself...easily said than done when u don't get the deserving accolades for a long time esp. for an artist. The audience applause is the real cheer leader for them.
Ninaipadellam nadandhuvittaal …Nenjil ore aalayam (1962), kannadasan, MSV-TKR, PBS… Portions of this song based on Keeravani ragam. Making a video by singing this song sung by a singer with a Turban, this urban lady was off to Durban…the butterfly just flew….for those without wings have to wait for the concert video :-) One of the classics from PBS…sung so nicely by this Melody Princess… Though the tone of PBS’s voice is different…the difference is not highlighted much because both PBS’s and Madhu’s voices have a soft under belly attached to it. Hence easy to lap it up despite the gender. What stands out is the clarity of the lyrics and the diction (could even be Madhu’s best thus far). Dynamics was top notch. Would have to say one of the most colorful videos from Madhu…a combination of red and green…makes one turn green with envy…and with Madhu in Red in tune with the Diwali crackers…was a cracker of a video without a doubt. Thank god there were not too many Bees around…else they would have mistook Madhu’s hair as their bee hive :-) Was impeccable start to finish…not once did Madhu lose it anywhere…lost her balance only towards the end in the bloopers…and did a nice balancing act to regain composure :-) Have to say the BGM was neither exclusive nor intrusive. Stayed in the background, not a highlight nor was it a spoiler. The Last word: No issues Madhu singing songs which are a male solo. But should refrain from singing the male voice also in duets, as the variation of voice, pitching and dynamics a male voice can bring about in contrast with the female voice is lost and it becomes a monotony. PunchLine: Madhu’s previous PBS attempt “Manidhan Enbavan” is tied for the 5th most popular video in this channel with 3.7 lakh views. Got to wait and watch if this one can better that. Irrespective of that, the turbaned legend PBS would have sent a boquet with his autograph to Madhu from the woodlands drive in, listening to this video had he and the drive in, been still around. Nonetheless, he would bless from above for sure. Even I did have an opportunity to meet him at the drive in (now semmozhi poonga) a few years back.

Nenjil ore aalayam (1962) written, directed and produced by director Sridhar. This film was a trendsetter for triangular love stories with sacrifice as the theme. The heroine in love with someone, is forced to marry an another person due to circumstances. Her husband gets cancer and she brings him to Chennai for treatment…and the doctor who treats her husband happens to be her ex-lover. The husband coming to know of her love, gives her freedom to marry her lover after his death. The lover sacrifices his love, cures her husband and finally dies of heart attack. Music composed by MSV-TKR, lyrics Kannadasan, all 7 songs composed and completed in a single day. Song “Engirundhaalum vazhga”( sung by AL Raghavan) set a precedent for several generations of jilted lover. This song was inspired by the then chief minister arignar Anna’s speech at a film function which kannadasan happened to listen to. Since Sivaji Ganesan was switching over from DMK to congress, Anna in his speech wished success to Sivaji by saying “Nee Engirundhallum vazhaga”. Song “Muthaana muthallavo” (P.Suseela) was written by Kannadasan in 10 minutes and recorded in 20 minutes. Song “Sonnadhu nee dhaanaa, sol sol” (P.Suseela) has an interesting backdrop. MSV was upset with Kannadasan for being late to the studio for song recording. He said he was not going to Kannadasan for lyrics anymore. Kannadasan (a master when it comes to situational songs) when he heard this MSV outpouring, handed the lyrics which began with “Sonnadhu nee dhaanaa sol…sol”. MSV was so impressed with the lyrics and all his anger just flew out of the window. Portions of song “Ninaipadhellam nadandhu vittaal” is based of keeravani ragam. Oruvar vazhum aalayam (TMS, LR Easwari) was also a nice song in this movie.
