Hello, thanks for all you knowledge! I am not an operator/driver, and I just started a carrier business similar to your situation. My question is what is required to add an additional driver(s) under my authority who will be driving my truck(s)? I understand the insurance aspect of it, listing them as a driver but when it comes to the authority, do I need to notify DOT/MC right away or is it when I file the MCS-150 annually/biannually? Also, do the new drivers need to be approved by the dot... or is the fact that they have a CDL, passed the physical and drug test sufficient and only requires the fleet owners approval? I hope this makes sense lol.... Also, where else does the new driver need to be listed? Thank you in adavance

What about the flipside. You the driver running under someone Authority to start out. I'm looking at getting started by running under someone's authority. They appear to be pretty established.
I'm planning to do that with a friend of mine. My goal is to lease on to his authority and I have another friend, that I might invest in a truck that has his CDL andTWIC+HME that we will lease a truck out and get him on also. That's my goal at this time but it's all in planning. One other things to look at , if you lease on to a new Authority, you are taking a risk also. Failures in new authorities are quite high. I would lease onto an established authority that has been in the game for 1.5-2+ years. But getting experience in any amount , is always good.
If leasing on to another’s authority how do you write off your insurance cost as an owner operator. Should they be transparent and show you the insurance bill.
It mostly depends on the driver that gets leased, insurance prices are getting ridiculous and are looking for any excuse to raise what they charge you. Try to find experienced drivers that have a clean record.

Can you lease an owner/operator with them using their own authority? If so, how? I understand that it would be double brokering to do so. Am I misunderstanding the term?
I would rather run under my own authority because if you run under a company's authority. They can fire you've just like you're a company driver. But if you run under your own authority no one can fire you. Because it's kind of funny to me. It's kind of funny to me how a company can have thousands of accidents with all of its trucks and still be allowed to hull freight But you lease on to that company and they can fire you if you have three violations It's kind of funny how that works. And I think the owner operator should be allowed to clean up after his own mess. The same way the trucking company does.. Just pull out your check book or file your insurance and clean up your own mess. Because leasing onto a company is too risky. They can fire you at the drop of a hat
