Robert Dover: The Purpose of NOT Giving the Rein

  • In dressage we like the notion of a soft and giving contact, however there are times as you advance up the levels and move through the movements where giving the rein would be counter productive and result in an improperly balanced horse. In this video, Olympic team coach Robert Dover shows us how to work through a steady contact then goes on to explain why this is so important as you ask for more balance and collection in the dressage horse.
    While this exercise is being done at the very advanced levels of dressage it can certainly be applied in a lighter and smaller version at the lower levels while you try to encourage your horse to take the contact and balance correctly.

    Fucking brilliant the only other person I have ever seen who trains horses like we do by shortening the wheel base and getting them to draw forward ! To much of this throw the rain away befor you even have submission or acceptance of the bridle. Make the horse do the work not the rider
