Daniel, to address the last question your dad was asking, islam has always existed, as all the prophets across all of time have passed the message of islam, this means that the loyal followers of their time were muslims, beginning with Adam, and finally with Mohammed (PBUP), was the final messenger, that completed the message of islam for the rest of time. 1. Salafi is named after the Salaf, it essentially means "Followers of the Salaf as-saaliheen" which are the first 3 generations that our prophet ﷺ named the best of this ummah. The creed is the Athari aqeedah officialised by Imam Ahmad and the aim is to be on the creed and religion of the Salaf without any innovations and interpolations. There are many different groups under this branch and some are extreme and hypocritical, but people like Muhammad 'Ali are on the correct path. 2. There were muslims before the arrival of Muhammad ﷺ who were named the Hanifs or monotheists, they practiced monotheism without knowing of the uncorrupted Islam. A lot were Christians, Jews etc. as well. Examples are Muhammad ﷺ himself, Abu bakr as-Siddiq, Salman al-Farisy. But after the advent of final Islam, no other religion was sufficient before Allah.
I don't think there were many muslims before the arrival of the prophet. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the only muslim pre-islam was zaid ibn amr who left Mecca and died before the arrival of the prophet may Allah be please with him.

Salafis refer to the generation of people who lived during the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). To simplify, it refers to the first three centuries after the Hijrah. After that generation, we refer to them as successors or caliphs
Sadly, People made sects (as prophet prophesized) and we can not call anyone who claim to be muslim as a Muslim for example: Ahmadi who believe there is another prophet after Muhammed (pbuh), Wihdat Al Wujud, Shia, khawarij, Hadith rejectors.. etc, these are considered as Disbelievers out of the fold of islam. Salafi follow Sunnah of Al Salaf AL Salih (Sahaba, followers Tabeen & students of knowledge of the first 3 generations. (as the prophet told us in Hadith) Including 4 Madhab Imams & bukhari ..etc Mutazila, ashaaira, Matruidhi are people who use philosophy (as they call it logic) in unseen subjects & interpret as they want not as Sahaba believed. They went against Salaf's creedle beliefs & interpreted the text with their Logic not as Salaf did & learned from The Prophet. They interpret & reject some Attributes & names of Allah swt. Mysticism (Sofia) are pure innovators... & many scholar make takkfir on them because of the weird practices & beliefs. Basically, Salafi mostly don't want to call themselves Salafi but just to clarify that "They follow Salaf" Cause innovation have become widespread & they are trying to clean the mess & call people to go back to Real Islam as in Quran & Hadith by the understanding of Salaf not whimes & desires (philosophy) To finish, Islam has boundries & we must stay inside & try not to make new things into the religion. As a muslim we believe that Jesus was Muslim and sent by Allah with a revelation (Book). But over time the message of "The book" got lost and corrupted and followers of Jesus started worshipping Jesus instead of real God (Allah). Then again Allah sent the last and final prophet, prophet Muhammad (SA) and sent the last revelation Quran as a guidance.

Alhamdulillah, finally you're showing your dad The Muslim Lantern content. And YES definitely show him the video dealing with hadith rejection and if you can tafseer that he does. I think you would also benefit from the tafseer. Few other things you mentioned: On following the companions, the Qur'an instructs us to do so. On following the salaf (righteous predecessors) specifically the first 3 generations, the sunnah instructs us to do so. So implementing these in our actions and methodology, opposed to simply taking the name, is in fact following Qur'an and sunnah. On dad's question on muslims before the prophet and if I understood correctly him thinking that such group exists under Islam. There were people who were trying to follow monotheism, the remnants of the message of the prophets before, however once the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ began whoever rejected him and the message is not a muslim, he is a disbeliever. You cannot reject any of the prophets and be a muslim. An explicit hadith on this is there and verses of the Qur'an are also there affirming this. Also an advice for brother Daniel: don't bring up and talk about things you yourself don't have knowledge on or understand fully regarding the religion yet. It can be harmful both to your dad and the viewers who don't have enough knowledge on the matter.

There were the signs of the religion of Abraham (pbuh) in Arabia, which was a monotheistic religion like Islam, the religion of Haneef. People, who acted on this religion though there, had passed a lot of time since Abraham (pbuh), were called Haneefs, referring to the religion of Abraham (pbuh). The term Haneef is used for Abraham (pbuh) in the Holy Quran: Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian but he was (an) upright (man), a Muslim, and he was not one of the polytheists. (1) People who were called Haneefs hated idols and believed in the existence and oneness of God Almighty (swt). For one example, at a fairground established in honor of one of the idols, such persons as Waraka Bin Nawfal, Obaidullah Bin Jahsh, Utman Bin Khuwairis, Zaid Bin Ameer deemed it disgracefulness and abasement to bow before the idols that are inanimate and unable to do good or evil and announced it publicly. (2) In addition, some understood the meaninglessness of worshipping the inanimate beings and struggled against that false creed. Omayya Bin Abu Salt, the chief of the city of Taef and one of the noted poets of Arabia, was one of them. Omayya had read the holy books in the Era of Ignorance and converted to the religion of Abraham (pbuh) quitting idol worshipping

Actually, Salafis are Sunnis at the end of the day, but it is just more emphasis on following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), his companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and the righteous predecessors (may Allah have mercy on them). As you said, someone could be a Salafi without labeling himself/herself as such. To ensure clarification for those who don’t know the meaning of Sunni. Sunni is taken from Sunnah which refers to the prophetic tradition of Mohammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). It is the mainstream Islam, hence, you may see Sunnis (especially reverts) who don’t label themselves other than Muslim. This is it in a nutshell.

There were actually many all over the world. And in Makkah specifically there were individuals who believed in One God alone before the Quran but didn't subscribe to Christianity or Judaism. The Prophet himself was in this category. Allah calls him 'Hanif' in the Quran before he received revelation. Also, ancient prophets such as Noah and Abraham came way before the Torah and Injeel and their religion was also the same, we call it Islam now, as does the Quran, as Allah teaches us.

People started to name the religions after people like Christ = Christianity, or ethnicity like Judy = Judaism, but the message is one always, which is Islam. Salafism just means Orthodox. It just means that the best understanding of religion is that of the first three generations. It's not a set. It's a principle of interpretation. But the word "Salafism" has been made very recently to mean "Obey the ruler blindly"

Daniel, to address the last question your dad was asking, islam has always existed, as all the prophets across all of time have passed the message of islam, this means that the loyal followers of their time were muslims, beginning with Adam, and finally with Mohammed (PBUP), was the final messenger, that completed the message of islam for the rest of time. Salafi is named after the Salaf, it essentially means "Followers of the Salaf as-saaliheen" which are the first 3 generations that our prophet ﷺ named the best of this ummah.
The creed is the Athari aqeedah officialised by Imam Ahmad and the aim is to be on the creed and religion of the Salaf without any innovations and interpolations.
There are many different groups under this branch and some are extreme and hypocritical, but people like Muhammad 'Ali are on the correct path.

There were muslims before the arrival of Muhammad ﷺ who were named the Hanifs or monotheists, they practiced monotheism without knowing of the uncorrupted Islam.
A lot were Christians, Jews etc. as well.
Examples are Muhammad ﷺ himself, Abu bakr as-Siddiq, Salman al-Farisy.
But after the advent of final Islam, no other religion was sufficient before Allah.
I don't think there were many muslims before the arrival of the prophet. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the only muslim pre-islam was zaid ibn amr who left Mecca and died before the arrival of the prophet may Allah be please with him.

Salafis refer to the generation of people who lived during the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). To simplify, it refers to the first three centuries after the Hijrah. After that generation, we refer to them as successors or caliphs

Mutazila, ashaaira, Matruidhi are people who use philosophy (as they call it logic) in unseen subjects & interpret as they want not as Sahaba believed.
They went against Salaf's creedle beliefs & interpreted the text with their Logic not as Salaf did & learned from The Prophet. They interpret & reject some Attributes & names of Allah swt.
Mysticism (Sofia) are pure innovators... & many scholar make takkfir on them because of the weird practices & beliefs.
Basically, Salafi mostly don't want to call themselves Salafi but just to clarify that "They follow Salaf" Cause innovation have become widespread & they are trying to clean the mess & call people to go back to Real Islam as in Quran & Hadith by the understanding of Salaf not whimes & desires (philosophy)
To finish, Islam has boundries & we must stay inside & try not to make new things into the religion. Just as nations before us did

As a muslim we believe that Jesus was Muslim and sent by Allah with a revelation (Book). But over time the message of "The book" got lost and corrupted and followers of Jesus started worshipping Jesus instead of real God (Allah). Then again Allah sent the last and final prophet, prophet Muhammad (SA) and sent the last revelation Quran as a guidance.

Few other things you mentioned:
On following the companions, the Qur'an instructs us to do so.
On following the salaf (righteous predecessors) specifically the first 3 generations, the sunnah instructs us to do so.
So implementing these in our actions and methodology, opposed to simply taking the name, is in fact following Qur'an and sunnah.
On dad's question on muslims before the prophet and if I understood correctly him thinking that such group exists under Islam. There were people who were trying to follow monotheism, the remnants of the message of the prophets before, however once the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ began whoever rejected him and the message is not a muslim, he is a disbeliever. You cannot reject any of the prophets and be a muslim. An explicit hadith on this is there and verses of the Qur'an are also there affirming this.
Also an advice for brother Daniel: don't bring up and talk about things you yourself don't have knowledge on or understand fully regarding the religion yet. It can be harmful both to your dad and the viewers who don't have enough knowledge on the matter.

There were the signs of the religion of Abraham (pbuh) in Arabia, which was a monotheistic religion like Islam, the religion of Haneef. People, who acted on this religion though there, had passed a lot of time since Abraham (pbuh), were called Haneefs, referring to the religion of Abraham (pbuh). The term Haneef is used for Abraham (pbuh) in the Holy Quran: Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian but he was (an) upright (man), a Muslim, and he was not one of the polytheists. (1)
People who were called Haneefs hated idols and believed in the existence and oneness of God Almighty (swt). For one example, at a fairground established in honor of one of the idols, such persons as Waraka Bin Nawfal, Obaidullah Bin Jahsh, Utman Bin Khuwairis, Zaid Bin Ameer deemed it disgracefulness and abasement to bow before the idols that are inanimate and unable to do good or evil and announced it publicly. (2)
In addition, some understood the meaninglessness of worshipping the inanimate beings and struggled against that false creed. Omayya Bin Abu Salt, the chief of the city of Taef and one of the noted poets of Arabia, was one of them. Omayya had read the holy books in the Era of Ignorance and converted to the religion of Abraham (pbuh) quitting idol worshipping

Actually, Salafis are Sunnis at the end of the day, but it is just more emphasis on following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), his companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and the righteous predecessors (may Allah have mercy on them). As you said, someone could be a Salafi without labeling himself/herself as such.
To ensure clarification for those who don’t know the meaning of Sunni. Sunni is taken from Sunnah which refers to the prophetic tradition of Mohammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). It is the mainstream Islam, hence, you may see Sunnis (especially reverts) who don’t label themselves other than Muslim. This is it in a nutshell.

There were actually many all over the world. And in Makkah specifically there were individuals who believed in One God alone before the Quran but didn't subscribe to Christianity or Judaism. The Prophet himself was in this category. Allah calls him 'Hanif' in the Quran before he received revelation.
Also, ancient prophets such as Noah and Abraham came way before the Torah and Injeel and their religion was also the same, we call it Islam now, as does the Quran, as Allah teaches us.

Salafism just means Orthodox. It just means that the best understanding of religion is that of the first three generations. It's not a set. It's a principle of interpretation. But the word "Salafism" has been made very recently to mean "Obey the ruler blindly"
