Cotton's attitude towards Vietnam vets was common among WW2 vets.
Some WWII vets just didn’t understand why Vietnam vets felt so differently about it, but many understood what they were feeling. Especially Pacific Theater vets because of similarities. One man who served in the Pacific said he understood their PTSD because he “fought the same battle every night for 60 years.”
It's ironic because some Vietnam veterans were the kids of world war II veterans. I met a Vietnam vet who wanted to be a war hero just like his father. His father didn't consider him a loser
@@meztizo_americano86 To some WW2 vets they are the heroes that defeated two powerful empires. Vietnam vets couldn't beat a bunch of rice farmers.
@@jackcarraway4707 America had a lot more help in WW2, and with Vietnam, it was a bit more complicated, since China had helped in some ways, too. If America used everything they got, they would have won in Vietnam, but the cost wasn't worth it. Wasn't worth it to use nukes either. And guerilla warfare, when done well, can do major damage to more powerful empires.
@meztizo_americano86 Thats really funny some of em think that way, so much people died in that war its insane only fea folk got punished for it. Sure for em ww2 had its "glory" and feeling good taking down big enemies and gained maybe fame but wasn't truly worth it in the long run. War crimes on all sides is absurd and depressing to learn (can't avoid war crimes in truth real talk, really are no good guys) in ww2. Really despise that war honestly

The pacific theater vets could sympathize more with the Vietnam vets. it was the euro theater and north Africa theatre vets that didn't get it
Also the WW2 boys were universally hailed as heroes while the Vietnam boys were reviled.

I can understand that. My dad was in the jungle on patrol one day, the next he was on a flight to Sydney and back at home with my mum and older brother. He wouldn’t have had time to decompress and talk about things with his mates. It would’ve been surreal as having to deal with everyday things like bills and daily life. Mum didn’t help because she expected dad to put it behind him like her father did, but her father was at war for four years, then spent another year being demobbed so he had a lot of time to adjust. I’m not saying my dad was a trope of the PTSD vet, but I’m sure it took a lot of adjustment on his behalf.

This, but imagine if you got the veterans from the Gulf War mixed in too. One generation fought against Nazis, another that fought against Commies, and then another who fought against Iraqis.
The Vietnam vets didn't really give the gulf war vets any praise.
Except they weren't fighting against commies. Most of the nva and Vietcong weren't communists they were nationalists and they neither knew nor cared what communism was and they just wanted to be independent.

I don't know the exact science behind it, but I imagine World War II veterans had an easier time with their PTSD because they were fully supported by all of the people in their country to go and fight another organized military while Vietnam vets had half the country hating their guts for getting drafted into a war where the enemy could be anybody they run into.
The USAs direct involvement in WW2 was also pretty short. All the Action the Europe-sent GIs saw was a short Trip over the Britisch channel, running over what was left of the German defense. The backbone of the Wehrmacht was already broken by the time you got involved.bOne could say, they didn't really "fight a war" at all. Just like WW1.

The turning point of WW2 was in 1943 after Stalingrad, Kursk, and the fall of Sicily.

The things that start to happen when a war goes on for a long time. They we're in the lucky Position of being the glorious conquerors everywhere they went.

Fun fact the Americans won more major battles in that war than they did in ww2. They didn't lose a single major battle. Prior to water gate, the north vietnamese believed they were losing and were even in the process of surrendering. However, after Water Gate political support died for the war and the U.S. withdrew.
Not saying that means the war was just or that sustained occupation would work out b/c in all honesty it probably wouldn't. Just interesting to note that Nam vets by all marks were way more effective on the battle field than the ww2 vets

USA did the heavy lifting against Japan.
Soviets were losing badly in Europe until 1942 when the Germans had to fight on 2 fronts after the arrival of the Yankees.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe they did not lose a major war until WW2.
They were way more effective against the U.S. than the North Vietnamese.
Were it not for resource and supply issues, the U.S. might not have prevailed against Japan

One thing I want literally point out about this episode with the Vietnam veterans. That they somehow get together with those that serve in the Viet Cong. My response when I first heard that was wait a second what are these guys doing in the United States they won the war? But then I thought about it and realized, even though they technically won the war economically, they’re not doing so great. Vietnam is still a communist economic failure. Also, the Cold War was won by capitalism in the end. Communism economically doesn’t work. So in the end, despite winning the war, they probably realized didn’t want to admit it that Vietnam is not getting any better. I’m not trying to put Vietnam down, but there’s still poor. Another thing that gets thrown out of the episode as the Korean War veterans. They actually share the same decade generation with the World War II veterans. Another thing I want to point out to is both the Korean War and Vietnam war both of them and this is where bureaucracy goes into place. They were literally not supposed to be called wars. Because our involvement in both those countries they were referred as police actions and oh yeah, to make it even more insane Is these hypocritical bureaucracy jerks go out of their way to literally say oh they’re not real wars because Congress didn’t really vote on going to war.
