I really love seeing how you make these artisans! Super cool! It would also be helpful if there were some links to find different kits to start molding keycaps. I checked out the synthes and they’re a bit pricey
@@ArtisanAllianceKeycaps could you make a dedicated video showing multiple techniques like that? I think that would really help a lot of beginners as it was confusing for me to figure out how some cap makers were achieving certain colors, patterns, or designs.
@@ArtisanAllianceKeycaps The couple of likes I'm getting on these two comments seem to point towards other people wanting dedicated videos too. I think people would really get a lot out of it and I'd be grateful too haha!
thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! would you be willing to share a list of the supplies you use? Specifically resin brand, dye brand, and silicone brand.
For this video I used Moldstar 30 silicone for the bottom molds, Moldstar 20 for the top molds, Smooth Cast 327 resin for the multishots, and Task 9 resin for the body shot
but why does your resin stick to the surface even if you move the mold around? i have a smoothcast 327 and mine doesnt behave like that. they all slide down that bottom and nothing is left sticking to where i put the resin
Can you print actual letters and other symbols with multishot casting? I wonder if DIY keycaps can be as good as those nice 100 - 150 $$ keycap sets BUT it is up to you to pick colours and fonts.
what percentage of artisans would you say are made this way? like, when someone says "full casted" are they just pouring into a mold and painting then or doing this?
You can watch this video about reusing casting consumables! ua-cam.com/video/IOaJVKhX2W8/v-deo.html For paint brushes acetone can clean them quite well before the resin cures
Likewise, great to see you back with a new video. They're all incredibly helpful and this one has come at just the right time for me. One question I have though is what do you do with the excess resin you mixed? The pink you used for the small shots for example, you only used a tiny amount. Do you just throw it away?
Like @@MakenModify says you can totally "piggyback" some colors to do other things, but a good amount of it does end up getting wasted (or you don't have time to use it depending how long the core application takes). In the grand scheme of things resin is /extremely/ cheap for keycaps, so a lot of us don't worry about it too much. It is worth noting that the less resin you mix, the higher percentage human error will affect your resin A:B ratio which some resins can be quite sensitive to. TheGlyph's arbitrary personal rule is to never mix less than 3ml of each side, just to be safe.
@@ArtisanAllianceKeycaps thanks for the reply. Yeah that all makes a lot of sense. It's kinda what I thought might have been the case. Nice idea with the single colour caps and blanks too. Thanks for the 3ml tip too. I've recently been using a 0.00 sensitive weighing scale with good success (using the "by weight mix ratio" calculator here. www.smooth-on.com/support/calculators/#ratio ) and I did worry that perhaps I was going too small.
Love your vids! They've inspired me to give the hobby a shot and discover that I really love sculpting and popping the top of my pressure pot to Christmas morning every day. I have a couple questions though.. What kind of silicone are you using for the white molds? I've seen them around a lot. Also, what kind of pigment/resin combos are you using to get the opaque colors? Forgive me if I'm reaching for trade secrets. - mastonon
We consider pressure to be necessary to produce high quality keycaps. If you just want to try out the process you can cast at atmosphere but it will be virtually impossible to avoid having bubbles in your final product
Hey I love your videos! I’m currently getting a pressure pot and materials to start experimenting on some artisan but I have a question about this, what would be a good pot life for resin you will use with a multicasting technique? Just to be sure you don’t waste it but let’s say can make 5 at a same time without a lot of pressure to put it in the pot quickly
How many times can you use a mould? Been doing my research on making caps and hope to have everything up and running in the next 2 weeks, thanks for these videos
That depends on quite a few factors like resin, handling, mold release, cap geometry, surface finish, etc so it's hard to give you a straight answer. Let's loosely say somewhere in the 25-50 range for most "average" conditions.
It's actually not that much! TheGlyph's arbitrary personal rule is to never mix less than 3ml of each side of resin, just to make sure the A:B mix ratio is accurate. What also may be confusing to you is the mixing cups can be reused many times, so what looks like a full cup is actually stacks of many previous shots that are already cured.
I was expecting a complex (and generally undecipherable) series of pours with various "why the heck do you want that?" molds being created along the way, but then he started actually painting the resin into the mold! Which got me thinking about photoresist, vapor deposition and sputtering 😃 my question/challenge for you: So what could you do with putting down a layer of photoresist, exposing it, and using some photolithography techniques with resin? If there were a way to use a lphv sprayer to apply the resin through the photoresist template... but I have no idea if the sprayer could be cleaned out well enough during the resin pot time. Is there a good solvent for that? I'm just throwing two disciplines into a blender to see what comes out. 😁
And about that pressure pot, can some good person throw in here some link to that? I am a bit confused because all I found on google were systems with air compressors combined with pressure tanks (for painting maybe)? EDIT: something like in this video ua-cam.com/video/AwVA7epXFB4/v-deo.html
If u were him u'd be concerned 24/7 too, with all the women that r outside fighting for his babies thankfully his workshop has four inch thick steel doors so he can keep making videos uninterrupted
This guy exudes ungodly levels of early 2000's energy just from his appearance. I love it!
tru
The only thing missing is the music from his ska band playing in the background during the video.
If he has a wallet on a chain, I'll lose my mind :)
ehh...kinda like femboys
Even your "trash" was just completely amazing! Really cool to see :)
subscribed because of the amount of heart and soul you put into making these
Love the encouraging vibes at the end there! It's so easy to get discouraged after a few bad pours in a row. Great vid, thanks!
Thankyou for showing this, you are a good teacher.
What kind of resin did you use?

Could you make a video going over some resin techniques like marbling, etc?
We use marbling twice in this video!

this channel is goated
Where can I get this?
What's that?! A toothpick for ants?
Love the tutorial. I'm sure it can help emerging artists.

This guy oozes 'trad climber'. Love him
Did you also use a pressure/vacuum chamber for these keycaps?
How do you prevent your resin in your pot from curing(while you wait for your cast to cure)? Or do you recreate your resin each time you cast?
You will want to mix a fresh batch of resin for each cast
badass tutorial man

What resin do you cast with, I use smoothcast 325 but it seems too short of pot life to do multishot with
326 or 327 can give you more working time without really changing any of the mechanical properties! Definitely try them out of 325 is too fast for you
What resin are you using here? Awesome video!
What resin are you using and what's the average work time with said resin
Hi. I'd like to know the purchase information about the resin and colorant used in the video.

why do you mix so much resin when you are only casting a handful of caps?
It's actually not that much! TheGlyph's arbitrary personal rule is to never mix less than 3ml of each side of resin, just to make sure the A:B mix ratio is accurate.
