Mostly fictional I do like the film the Last Samurai and I greatly respect the amount of time put into Japanese Sword Training especially by Tom Cruise. There is a movie about the Real Last Samurai with the same name

The movie was about the end of the Samurai. In English Samurai is both singular and plural. The last Samurai means "Saigo no Samuraitachi" In English, one does not say Samurais (Samuraitachi). Tom Cruise was not the last Samurai. Katsumoto's Clan was the last Samurai. Nobody in the USA thinks Tom Cruise was "The Last Samurai". Tom's character was along for the ride and an hatamoto to Kastumoto.

By the way, emperor Meiji awarded Jules Brunet not only the order sacred treasure (瑞宝章, Zuihō-shō) in 1895 but the order of the rising sun too (旭日章, Kyokujitsu-shō) in 1881... This is a proof of respect despite his fight against him.
Brunet, because of his training, would have been quite a competant swordsman with a military sabre and would have been able to adapt to using a katana quite readily imho.
the real story is very different but at the same time similar, I can see why it was written in that way, both had similar values, in different circumstances they would have been good comrades.

I have a good friend of mine who trains in the samurai martial arts, and has a Japanese teacher that comes over from Japan and teaches them from time to time, those fellers are very good to have good timing and good skill, some of it almost the medieval knight from Europe. However it was a tragic story on both the Hollywood version of The last samurai, and in history. Here's my question for you partner, do you think the samurai were in the wrong or the American military was in the wrong for how they took their actions or is it no contest or the time period?
I am very glad that today we in the USA are able to count Japan as one our closest allies in the world. I have so much respect and admiration for your history, especially militarily, and your culture. And, of course your people, who are amazing. We have the shared history of having fought the greatest naval battles of all time with Japan. The Japanese are truly an honorable people, you were a mighty adversary, and now a great friend.
Sometimes I wish the Meji govenrment didn't just outright gotten rid of the Samauri class but offer them military positions as field officers & other high ranking positions in the newly formed modern Japan's military force at the time. Many were brilliant tacticians & excellent CQB experts, the kind of valuable skills needed for any military forces when needed, give them some modern military tactics & technology. They'll be a force to be reckon with.
Most of them had no practical military experience- the shogunate had basically let them become completely useless. This is why they signed the treaty with the US so quickly- they hadn’t any military training or development in 265 years. The Samurai of the Sengoku period were very well trained and studied and lots of practical experience. The Samurai of the Meiji era were just born into high status families of antiquated political relevance - otherwise they wouldn’t have been hiring people from France to teach them how to military. The new era of hostility taught many people extensive military training but not just to the samurai. The imperial era of Japanese history was very aggressive and well studied in the arts of war without the familial ties of the Samurai deciding who would be educated in it. New political realities decided who would wage war.
They did join the military and political classes. The infamously poisonous relationship between the IJA and IJN was because their commanding class were mostly samurai of clans who were enemies. It was referenced in one movie about Isoroku Yamamoto.
I saw TLS 15 or more years ago and mildly enjoyed it, though I preferred NHK’s annual Taiga Dorama. Your video made me want to watch… MORE of YOUR videos!

Yep. Samurai had access to firearms, cannons and European equipment since 1543. Also they did keep up with some modernization during the 200+ year of peace even up to the point when they fought the Imperial forces but the Imperial Forces had more modern equipment and adopted more modern battle formation. Ever since Weebs and stupid people saw the movie they believe that Samurai didn't use firearms till USA came.

Tom Cruise was not the Last Samurai, Katsumoto is the Samurai refered in the title. It was never the movie's intention to say Cruise was the Last Samurai.

There is always a problem with movies etc. When an outsider to a Culture or a Country tries to tell a story about someone or a group of people. This is a reality mentioned in Social Anthropology. It's also why people in the U.S.A who are aware of the problem use the word Hollyweird. Outsiders to a culture have social biases based on their own culture which are full of speculations and assumptions. I consider the problem as being rooted in ignorance and disrespect. Recently I have watched a 2016 Martin Scorcese movie called Silence, that tells the story of two jesuit priests who entered Japan looking for another priest during the attenpts of portuguese to spread catholicism in Japan, in the 17th century, right after the Shimabara rebellion. It's based on a novel by Shûsaku Endô and already had an japanese adaptation by Masahiro Shinoda in 1971. Can you someday do a video about this movie also? Bests.

It seems the movie "Lady Snowblood" starts in the time when Saigo was trying to appease the rebels by setting up schools and communities. Snowblood's father [her legal father] was sent to be a teacher; he was murdered, and the mother was raped and enslaved. Having murdered her owner, she was sent to prison where she became pregnant and died giving birth to Snowblood, who was born for the purpose of avenging her mother and her mother's husband, her legal father. By the time she was old enough to carry out her duty, things had changed a lot, and her revenge created more suffering.

Btw, the establishment of the Meiji central government marked the achievement their Nara period ancestors had long sought after 11 centuries. At first the Nara court tasted some Chinese soup (the 唐 táng/tou dynasty, not the 湯 tāng/soup/suimono dynasty), but the clans were like "no" bcuz they were opposed to centralization. Then the Meiji court tried numerous western dishes (constitutions) to make their own. They tried English tea; too unwieldy to integrate with green tea, American hamburger; too liberal, Spanish jamon (hamon); too despotic, french baguette; also despotic, German/Preussen schnitzel; "oooooooooh" they said. End of story, they then made tonkatsu (Meiji constitution) out of that

It reminded me of the Fact how meany People who know English, especialy as first Language prounance wrong the Name of the famous French Writer Jules Verne as "Jools Vrn" instead as it is supposed be Prounanced: "Zh-ee-l (or maybe better as Zh-ih-l) V-eh-rh-n". English is not my First Language. And also, from all the Languages that use the Latin Script, the English Language has the most difficult Orthography. Hmmm, popular maybe but for my money I think "when the last sword is drawn" , "yojimbo" (if you like something more serious) or the 1971 campy classic "Red Sun" if you want something less serious but with a lot of heart will probably always be the best of the genre, but then I can be somewhat of a curmudgeon sometimes.

I thought it was shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa who ordered the Ryoan-ji temple to be built, but what is true is that it was built during his rule. Edit: In fact, it was during his rule when the Ōnin War began.

There is always a problem with movies etc. When an outsider to a Culture or a Country tries to tell a story about someone or a group of people. This is a reality mentioned in Social Anthropology. It's also why people in the U.S.A who are aware of the problem use the word Hollyweird. Outsiders to a culture have social biases based on their own culture which are full of speculations and assumptions. I consider the problem as being rooted in ignorance and disrespect. So thank you Shogo for educating us about Japanese Culture and History.

Recently I have watched a 2016 Martin Scorcese movie called Silence, that tells the story of two jesuit priests who entered Japan looking for another priest during the attenpts of portuguese to spread catholicism in Japan, in the 17th century, right after the Shimabara rebellion.
It's based on a novel by Shûsaku Endô and already had an japanese adaptation by Masahiro Shinoda in 1971.

It seems the movie "Lady Snowblood" starts in the time when Saigo was trying to appease the rebels by setting up schools and communities. Snowblood's father [her legal father] was sent to be a teacher; he was murdered, and the mother was raped and enslaved. Having murdered her owner, she was sent to prison where she became pregnant and died giving birth to Snowblood, who was born for the purpose of avenging her mother and her mother's husband, her legal father.
By the time she was old enough to carry out her duty, things had changed a lot, and her revenge created more suffering.
If I was the shogun at that era I would end the emperor family rules and alliance myself with the western world and creating a nice spot for my self.. 😁 .. but I don't need to because things are always working out by itself... 🤣😂....

Btw, the establishment of the Meiji central government marked the achievement their Nara period ancestors had long sought after 11 centuries. At first the Nara court tasted some Chinese soup (the 唐 táng/tou dynasty, not the 湯 tāng/soup/suimono dynasty), but the clans were like "no" bcuz they were opposed to centralization.
Then the Meiji court tried numerous western dishes (constitutions) to make their own. They tried English tea; too unwieldy to integrate with green tea, American hamburger; too liberal, Spanish jamon (hamon); too despotic, french baguette; also despotic, German/Preussen schnitzel; "oooooooooh" they said. End of story, they then made tonkatsu (Meiji constitution) out of that

It reminded me of the Fact how meany People who know English, especialy as first Language prounance wrong the Name of the famous French Writer Jules Verne as "Jools Vrn" instead as it is supposed be Prounanced: "Zh-ee-l (or maybe better as Zh-ih-l) V-eh-rh-n". English is not my First Language. And also, from all the Languages that use the Latin Script, the English Language has the most difficult Orthography. Becouse of that I sometimes make Mistakes when I write English, and also it is difficult for me to write the correct Prounancemen of words using English Orthography.
I took French in high school so I don’t have a accent but I read it as zjewel brew-nay (wow there is no way to type those sounds using English lol)

@@Jenny-tm3cm I have a lot of Trouble writing French and German Prounancement using English Orthography. Especialy since English is not my First Language. French "J", should in English be writen as "Zh", then the Title of the famous Russian Novel in English language "Doctor Zhivago" is writen like that. Other Sounds are more difficult to figer out.

Hmmm, popular maybe but for my money I think "when the last sword is drawn" , "yojimbo" (if you like something more serious) or the 1971 campy classic "Red Sun" if you want something less serious but with a lot of heart will probably always be the best of the genre, but then I can be somewhat of a curmudgeon sometimes.

But weren’t all samurai alive when the samurai class was abolished technically the last samurai, that formally stopped being samurai at the same time?
I thought it was shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa who ordered the Ryoan-ji temple to be built, but what is true is that it was built during his rule.
Edit: In fact, it was during his rule when the Ōnin War began.

Why did they make a different character instead of the real last Samurai, Saigo Takamori, I always wondered about this. 🤔
Because it’s an American movie made by an American company and that’s why they wanted the story to revolve around an American, and not English.
I think they didn't want to be tied down by history. And if they had used the real character, there would have been complaints as soon as they departed from the facts!
