  • HAM RADIO: High VSWR on Car antenna FIND & FIX. 2/70M, OK so I had a high VSWR reading on my car antenna, other Ham's reported that my signal was down against my normal report, Time to find out why..
    Hey why not look it up and see for yourself I'm not an expert on these matters just a guy that is giving it a go and sharing my experiences.
    Hope you enjoy...
    PS: Sorry! my Devon lingo... I should have corrected myself and said adjusting the antenna to reach the best VSWR readings.. and not SWRing!
    Just for fun
    Please subscribe and like.
    Cheers
    Mike - M0MSN
    P.S. do not take my word for it, give it a go for yourself.

    My Tarheel was completely frozen to the quick release HI-Q (very good by the way) base today - had to unscrew the whole mount! Good effort on the detective work Mike. Nice kerchunk at the end. Now we want to se the autopsy of the old antenna.

    I have virtually the same setup on my Mini Cooper, my mount is on the top of the back hatch on the center line of the vehicle. However I use the Diamond brand 2 meter / 440 band antenna, I believe the model number is SG 7900 ( high gain model ). Been using the Diamond band antennas for several decades. When tested for swr across the U.S. 2 meter band (144-148 mghz) the swr are petty much flat across the band and 70 centimeter is relatively low as well.
    Many years ago I was at an amateur radio club meeting where there was a radio demonstration inside the building. One of the club members was have trouble with swr’s, I said I will be right. I went out to my 4 x 4 pickup and pulled off my diamond antenna mounted to a large 4 magnet mount on top of the cab of the truck. Took the antenna and mount inside and attached it to the radio, the swr’s were flat when checked.
    I have also used the Diamond antennas on bicycles as well with very low if no swr’s.
    If you can get them, I would try the diamond antennas, I personally have had great success with this brand of antennas!

    Either broken center conductor in the coax on either end or a possible short circuit in the coax next the antenna may have a small disc capacitor in it thats blown

    Fixing the sleep mode is simple on the 102 meter. Push and hold the blue button until your in the menu, select item #2 and then adjust the timeout from 1-9 minutes.

    Good video! You might want to look at the NanoVNA. Only about $70 and is a great tool to have! It would have been great for this.

    Hi Mike... Great vid... I'm about to fit a boot mount on my car but standard coax is to large..Where did you get your mount from with the thinner coax on it.. Appreciate any info please...M1bsz. Graham...

      I made it from parts purchased from various suppliers. The coax is RG174.

    I had a problem at the back of my radio once with high SWR. Right where the coax makes a hard turn out the back of the radio, It became barely shorted but eventually shorted completely 100% from the outside shield to center conductor. SWR went off the scale.
    To solve the issue I put in a new coax and installed an PL259 Elbow on my Stryker 955.
    Mike is 2/70 bands what most Ham operators run in their cars?

      Yep, 2M and 70CM are the local mobile bands and sometimes 4M and 10/11M :)

    To hell with continuity. Take the antenna off and put a dummy load on the mount. Good SWR=good cable and mount. Next suspect...

    • @mike-M0MSN
      @mike-M0MSN  3 місяці тому

      Not so, the dummy load does not require a good ground at the antenna mount or a good ground plain to work.

    • @samallan6616
      @samallan6616 3 місяці тому

      @@mike-M0MSN True. But you are not checking the ground plane. You are checking the mount and coax to ensure RF is actually being delivered to the antenna efficiently. Checking how well you are bonded to a ground plane is a different subject. You can have good continuity and still have a huge impedance bump somewhere in the mount and/or cable. A dummy load checks both impedance and continuity. And if you've lost all or most of your reception, that points to a continuity issue or a faulty antenna. Check with a dummy load anyway. And gain antennas are available for VHF/UHF which do not require a ground plane. All the best!

    great video... the only thing that bugged the heck out of me was that you kept referring to "swr'ing the antenna".... now i *DO* know what you meant, but swring the antenna is not what you're doing (it doesnt exist) - you're tuning it :D but i digress ... i guess we should all be lucking you wasn't SWARING the antenna lmao
