It never stops amazing me on how many weird aircraft the brits brought into WW2. Some of these canvas biplanes of strings and exposed crews and engines were introduced just a few years before the war started. It's like they, the army, navy and airforce staff tossed a bunch of proposed designs from geniouses and dumba*** at a damp wall and picked those that stuck.
@@kristianfischer9814 Actually, the plural of buffalo is... buffalo. 🙃 ...But given that it's a proper name in this instance, pluralizing it by using an 's' at the end does feel appropriate. 🤷♂
In the ABDACOM campaign, I came across the bug , that if any of my Wildebeast planes were shot down (even if they`d already dropped their torpedo and those torps were already accounted for) and a ship ran over the plane wreck, the ship would explode numerous times and sink. And if a lot of wildebeast were shot down, and the way the fleet circled around in a confused mess, quite a few ships could explode. I bet that`s what happened to your destroyer at 20.00. By the way, most allied torps only had a top speed of 30 knots...so if you run directly away from the torpedo planes, your military ships (except your battleships) at max speed should outrun the torps. And I always have my ships make smoke screen, regardless if the enemy is planes or ships...anything to confuse the enemy. Altho smoke might block your camera angles for your video.
Coincidentally, I’d actually started rewatching your USN campaign a few days before you posted episode 1 of this series! Something that might help you here: in your USN campaign, when you started to realise you were being targeted by enemy aircraft, you started using the circular formation for your fleets (I think you said it helped concentrate the AA fire a bit more). Maybe that would help you here, considering your main threat seems to be enemy air forces? Nice to see this game getting some more love :)
Taff, I love the great cinematic shots you are getting in this video, but you might want to consider prioritizing protecting your ships from the torpedo attacks. There are some very effective maneuvers that can help, such as turning directly into the attackers before they even drop their ordinance, steering to slip between the torpedoes. Not sure what happened with that second ship you lost, it did seem very odd. For defense against strafing and bombing, I suggest using smoke and turning in tight circles (which was actually a standard tactic used by the Japanese navy).

I think those fighters were CW-21's. They were in that theater at the time. The aa guns sound much better than before they were patched. Much beefier and real sounding
Hey Taff, just FYI - With the two fish you put into PoW, and the fire that broke out around 'A' turret, I think it's entirely possible you might have damaged her 'A' turret badly enough that she needs to either go in for extensive repairs in drydock, or be limited to only 6 functional main guns (not to mention only 2 forward-firing main guns!) It's like the end of her chase of Bismarck all over again...
So, I checked , because I'm a nerd like that, and that's *definitely* HMS Repulse that you sunk last episode - The silhouettes of Repulse and Renown were quite different at this time, particularly in the bridge area, apparently. Which I bet means the battleship is Prince of Wales. I suspect the other ships match up with the composition of Force Z, as well. I know the timing is off, historically speaking, but apparently in this timeline, Force Z got a bit of a reprieve, even if only for a week or two in the case of Repulse 😕 EDIT: Should have waited until the end, LOL =P
I love how obsolete trounced the modern Bismarck. The slow speed of the Swordfish made for a headache when combined with the weather. The rough seas made targeting hard for one, and due to the heavy winds, the planes got pushed sideways at almost the same speed as they were going forward. This made targeting especially hard as you had to aim at a very unintuitive spot. Not only that, but since the swordfish was built of wood spars and canvas, the explosive rounds would just fly through them harmlessly without detonating. A more modern plane would have fared a lot worse.
This is such a great series so far. Although the Japanese AA seems somewhat worse than I thought it would be. You'd think those swordfish would be destroyed by machine guns since they flew down the entire column....
Aww man, when did you start a new campaign!? I missed the first one... gonna go watch that first! Love this game... I'm currently playing my 3rd go through as America, just making it harder and harder, and setting up missions for myself for a challenge!!
My big complaint with this game was how easy it was. Enemy AI wouldn't try and avoid submarine torpedo attacks or bombers. But players could. Some players never lost a battle. Not exactly edge of your seat stuff. But the AI might have improved. They are making you work for your engagements and its costing you. Much more interesting than the game was before.
A big part of what you are seeing here is down to the mod he is using, which is much, much more difficult. In the base game, some of the mechanics remain the same. Ship can still be surprised by submarine strikes, which they don't avoid, but ships alerted to torpedoes will definitely try to avoid them. On the flip side, I have been hit by several multi-sub attack groups firing cross patterns that are nearly impossible to dodge, leading to multiple ship losses. It is more challenging than earlier versions.
A lot of back-and-forth action for the sides there around Christmas/New Year's. If there were no subs in the area, could it have been some type of mine(s)?
There are no mines in this game. It was more likely one of the leftover air-dropped torpedoes. You could see another torpedo still in the water after it happened. If it had been a sub, there would have been a whole spread. However, the way that ship exploded did seem glitchy.
I think hearing that same AA gun sound effect from every ship in the game might drive me insane. Are there any sound mods? Also the pronunciation of Tone is more like 'toe-nah'.
Depends on the plane. But when fighters crash it’s about the equivalent of 100lb-200lb bomb. The difference though it the planes don’t penetrate and cause a lot more fires
The starting conditions are a rough approximation of the situation in that theater in early 1942, but otherwise, no, this game always produces an alternate outcome from historical events. It would be very hard to try to replicate actual history, because you can't count on successfully winning battles or sinking ships as they were historically sunk. Plus, the game's AI simply refuses to cooperate.
@@devrossik It would also be pretty pointless to simply replicate actual history: what player of the game would want to play something that always ends the same way no matter what you do? It would get very boring very quickly!
@@colindouglas7769 I understand and agree, but some people want to be able to recreate historical battles as closely as possible. Just wanted the poster to understand that this game can't do that.
