- Born in Charleston, South Carolina, William Moultrie (1785-1787) is known for his leadership during the American Revolutionary War. He defended the city of Charleston from British attack in 1776, and Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island was named for him. He contributed the element of the crescent moon to the South Carolina State Flag. Moultrie also served as 35th Governor of South Carolina.

My ancestor CAPT George Wade fought under Gen Moultrie at this battle. So many of us here have this bit of history in our life stories - very cool.
Sharing some distant family history with my nine year old son here tonight in Hong Kong. Our branch of the family stems from a younger brother of the General's grandfather or great-grandfather back in Scotland who came to the colonies in the mid 1600s...much earlier than John Moultrie (as the emigre' for that branch) the General's father. Our branch settled in Virginia rather than SC.
