    A lot of those titles ended because of the artists. They fell behind, they made more money going to conventions, they got burned out on comics culture, they decided to take a break and have kids, they lost interest and moved on to other books, etc. And when the artists loses momentum, I think it's easy for the writers to move onto other things rather than complete the project.

      Where would they market to? TV commercials? Billboards? Sending writers on late night TV? Our community is so small they won't advertise there...best they can hope nowadays is a full page in Previews, a UA-cam person endorses it to get slabbed the minute you buy it and a poster for the LCS.
      To me availability and marketing are different as a kid I had more access to buy comics than I do as an adult. Every gas station or grocery store had them, now it's a specialty store that doesn't exist in most towns or online to buy unseen (unread).

    Do you think this problem has more to do with the individual creators or Image as a publisher? Given the impression I get of Image where it’s all about creator freedom I’m inclined to think that the blame falls more on the creators’ shoulders if a book is majorly delayed or just disappears. But I’m clearly not an expert on this subject so I’d be interested in your take.

    There's no new deal that Image can offer to the Saga creators because Image already offers the best possible deal to creators from the start. Image is not a publisher, it's a self-publishing platform more similar to Kickstarter or Amazon than to Marvel/DC. If the Saga duo stopped producing Saga isn't because of money reasons. It made them more money than they'll make at the majors in their whole life.
    In this sense, gotta give a lot of credit to Kirkman for continuing creating series (and caring) when he could retire and live like a king for life.

    Image is great. And its great that creators have so much ownership and control. But there is a flip side to that. Without the oversight structure above them that the companies like Marvel and DC have, its much easier for a book to disappear. Some creators (even if only on some of their books) need the help of deadlines or editorial guidance.

  • @walterhoward5512
    @walterhoward5512 3 роки тому +9

    Excluding comics like Saga, I'm sure low sales is the the thing killing the vast majority of these comics. You brought up Witches starting out at over 60k in sales, but what did its last issue sell? I bet it wasn't 60k.
    The main problem Image has is that it is selling stuff mostly on the direct market. The direct market wasn't made to sell comics. It was made to sell Marvel and DC superhero comics. Outside of some notable exceptions, nothing is really going to thrive in the direct market if it isn't from the big 2. Image needs to try and expand its business model to reach out to new markets. It is criminal that Image lacks any kind of online subscription service. They need to figure out how to share these profits with creators and make something like Marvel unlimited or Viz's app.
    The great tragedy of the American comic book industry is that it has everything it needs to compete with manga and Scholastic. Marvel has the corporate clout and support, DC has (or at least had) the editorial structure and Image has the content. The problem is that even if they were to combine into one Megazord like super company, none of them have the business sense to just copy what manga is doing.

Somewhere along the way, they shifted over to cerebral literature that only appeals to lit majors in liberal arts colleges. Despite Image's origins, I regularly hear pundits refer to Image as the place to go when you don't want superhero comics. At some point, Image needs to decide what kind of publisher it wants to be and go all in with a consistent publishing schedule on titles that hit.

      @Avingay Anfordstay The individual lines are creator owned and creator controlled. Image is not really the owner of that stuff unlike Marvel/DC. So the whole „shared universe“ was just a gimmick in the beginning, but they actually don’t really share a universe. Or when they share a universe, then it’s in the same way as Marvel and DC share a universe: there are stories that combine Marvel and DC, but for 99.9% of the stories they don’t share a universe.

      @Avingay Anfordstay I read early Image and yes, they did a lot of crossover promotions. They obviously tried to be the new Marvel. BUT they are not structured like Marvel/DC, which means there is no real free flow of characters (i.e. villains or team based heroes) that can show up at unexpected places and take roots. I.e. a Spawn villain can not become the long term nemesis of the Witchblade as these are two separated ownerships. This will always limit their type of shared universe as it will never be truly shared, just a lot of crossovers.

There is no way on Earth you can convince me that when it returns it won't be the highest selling release that month. There will be ten variants to ensure that. That's the new way of hitting those big numbers. Then the title will settle right back in evening out at similar numbers to where it left off or maybe higher. I'm betting that a lot of new readers have bought trade paperbacks since the hiatus started and they'll be just as in as the original reading audience.

    A lot of the books from Image just don’t appeal to me or disappear (VS). Some of the titles from creators with Big 2 ties just look like half baked Netflix pitches, all hoping for that sweet TWD magical deal.

    Isola was a hot book that kind of disappeared too. The art was phenomenal. I just thought the book meandered too much in the writing and didnt move enough. Its pretty much disappeared since early last year. Im sure the art took a long time too. Its one of those books that should have maybe been trade only. Its also reason you need writing that doesnt meander.

    It feels like Image and/or the various creators get bored if a title gets beyond a certain length and thus titles just languish. The graphic novels seem to be bizarrely published, too. So, it isn’t just me. Ascender, Undiscovered Country, Saga, Copperhead, Rat Queens, and Monstress are the ones that just drop off. “The Walking Dead” was one where the change in the graphic novels to omnibus formats was more than a bit funky for readers, too.

    I think most of these title delays is because the creators just haven’t gotten around to working on them. Some of these creators are balancing TV & film careers and some of them are balancing mainstream work and some of them launched a book with the intention of rolling it into a Netflix series and when the book reaches a certain threshold they move on. These publishing pauses have very little to do with Image management. The lack of marketing certainly does but Eric Stephenson is not pumping the brakes on these titles. The creative teams are just not getting around to working on the books.

  • @brandonperlow9091
    @brandonperlow9091 3 роки тому +1

    If your book doesnt get released in a certain time frame, you wont get paid in one of the 6 month windows that Image does. Books cant be made if folks arent getting paid quickly enough. Books are made by the creators own budget or sweat till Image pays them their royalties. Also in Trades, I hear that image gets 30% and they expect the cheap 9.95 or whatever the cheap rate is now. So after wholesale/distributor discount, Image is the only one making money since they arent paying the creator costs. They are taking a good chunk of the profits in that regard.

And Brit. and the walking dead. And WildCATS. And Happy. And Descender. And Ascender. And Rat Queens. And The Agency. And Revenge. And Millarworld. But true, the sudden stop of books is annoying at times. I have quite a few surprise Image cancelations wrecks in my comicus interruptus box. But, Image mostly not being the owner of the work I'm unsure how much leverage they have, and this is really a lack of knowledge how those contracts work. Which opens up the question: how do they work? does anybody happen to know and care to share?

    WHY isn't John Byrne doing something with his NEXT MEN? Simply put, Image separates the men and women from the boys and girls! Image is a TRUE publisher who handle publishing and advertising but the rest is up to the creators and their staff! It's relatively easy to look like a genius when you work on a title like Superman, a book almost 100 years old, with a tremendous legacy! Creating your own world and characters is a LOT harder! Outside of comics, go to a used bookstore, look at the many books and titles and note how many of the writers whose names you recognize!

    Top Cow, which used to be a favorite imprint of mine, seems to be vapor at this point. Witchblade, Darkness is eh. Everything there has been defanged and lost its sex appeal. Which let’s be honest was their main stock and trade for many of their titles. They were doing some interesting things around with their shared world around 2010/11.
    It would be nice if Image would pick Darker Image back up as an anthology series with different writer and artists as a pilot series.
