  • NKP #765: Steam In The Valley 9-10-11-2021. In September of 2021, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad their annual "Steam In The Valley" event with their visiting star. Nickle Plate Road #765.
765 was built in 1944 by the Lima Locomotive Works as an S-2 2-8-4 Berkshire locomotive for the "New York, Chicago, and St. Louis" railroad. Better know as the "Nickle Plate Road" (NKP). 765 hauled fast freight trains until she was retired in 1958. She was put on display in downtown Fort Wayne IN, and sat until 1971 when the newly formed "Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society" purchased the engine and began restoration. After an 8 year, out door restoration, the 765 took it's first run under her own power in 21 years. She would operate over 115,000 miles of excursions for the Southern Steam Program, the New River Gorge, and lot's of other places up until 1993 when she was brought in for a major overhaul. Between 2001 and 2006, 765 received a complete overhaul to full compliance with the FRA, and she would make her first public appearances in 2009. In 2012, Norfolk Southern started back their steam program, and for the next 4 years, 765 would be the main steam star for the northern half of their system. After 2016, the NS steam program would be discontinued and 765 was restricted to few places to run. She would run the Steam In The Valley and Joliet Rocket excursions until 2019, when liability issues and costs would ultimately plague the 765 from running the Joliet Rocket. Today 765 continues to make frequent appearances in Fort Wayne and Cuyahoga Valley, and has been operable ever since.
