My father served a total of 38 years but his first 5 were in the Navy during WWII! His destroyer was instrumental in the surrender of Japan. They picked up the Japanese negotiating party 3 days before the USS Missouri arrived. They held preliminary negotiations for the surrender on the USS Stack. He will always be my #1 hero! But so are all who have served and died. My great Uncle Peter was killed in WWI and buried in France. We are related to George Washington's wife Martha whose great granddaughter was married to Gen Robert E Lee. My paternal grandmother was a cousin 3 times removed to Lee. My family like many served and fought in every war and conflict except Korea. This medley always make my heart swell with proud for all who served and died to preserve our freedoms, greatest in the world. It also brings tears of pride for their service and sacrifices. I am very proud of my country, and all those who have served, including my father a WW11 veteran, and many family members who also served from WW1 to Desert Storm. I thank you all!
I don’t like to seem rude but why do those that served and are still serving in the US forces seem to think that they are ‘owed one’ by American Society? Thousands of troops serving many countries across the globe don’t consider themselves gods gift to everybody for doing their job,yet once somebody in the USA was or still is part of the army they feel that they need to tell the world how wonderful they are as though the USA owes them a favour and congratulations for doing a job whether it was in the past ,which many do,or today.
So what,so did many people. Those in the UK army don’t expect extra because they were in the forces at any time. The USA got themselves involved in Vietnam as you know. Let’s put it like this ‘I served the UK Forces from 1965 to 1969 and had experience of many small problems at that time, but I don’t consider myself a hero like the US do and wonder being what type of veteran I can get away with, and it seems all I have to do is announce when I was in the army and sit back to be adored.

Could a Marine clarify why the other branches salute their flag when their service song is played, but the Marines didn't? I've noticed it since last year and I never knew why. I don't live in the United States either.

Can someone tell me whose big idea was it to no longer have the Marines salute during the playing of their anthem and why they felt it necessary because it makes them look so awkward compared to the other services.
