How to Line Up Wallpaper like a Pro

Review the Design: Take a moment to carefully look at how the pattern repeats. This initial observation will set the foundation for your entire wallpapering project.
Pre-measure: Before you begin hanging your wallpaper, always pre-measure your walls. Leave extra at the top and bottom of each strip as you will need this for trimming and cutting it with an exacto knife. This extra length allows you to get the pattern lined up perfectly with the next panel while it is wet. Allow at least 3 inches top and bottom for trimming at the ceiling and floor level.
Design Repeats: Every wallpaper has a pattern repeat. This can be a straight, a drop or a random match. A straight match pattern lines up directly across from the left side to the right side of the wallpaper. When you have a straight match you have no waste when hanging the wallpaper.
A drop match means what ever the drop repeat is, that will be wasted. For example, if you have a 10" drop repeat, that means you need to add on 10" in the length of each panel just to line up the pattern on each strip of wallpaper. The bigger the vertical repeat the more wallpaper you will need to order to line up the pattern side to side. Often patterns have a drop match to make the wallpaper more interesting and this usually comes in larger pattern.
Pro Tip:
Straight Match Patterns: Patterns with a straight match flow from left to right and line up seamlessly, resulting in less waste. This is an important consideration when shopping for wallpaper. If you chose a wallpaper that has a large repeat, be aware that it will result in more waste as you’ll need to move that panel up the height of the vertical repeat to achieve the perfect match. We love big repeats because it makes the pattern not so repetitive in design.
