Jewar Airport Land Acquisition: The Darker Side of Development
The Uttar Pradesh government recently notified the phase 3 expansion of Jewar airport. The government will now conduct the Social Impact Assessment for the acquisition of an additional 2,053 hectares of land for the upcoming airport.
The Noida International Airport, also known as the Jewar International Airport, is being constructed near Jewar in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. The airport is the pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will be an alternative to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. However, for years, farmers in many villages in the region have been opposing the UP government’s land acquisition policy for the project.
We visited Ranhera village in Jewar, where lands of farmers were acquired. Pritam Singh is a resident of Ranhera village. His father’s land is located right at the runway of the upcoming airport, but he says that the government has not adequately compensated the family.
