6:55 Andrew said that his mouth was incredibly dry from anxiety during this performance and that's why he kept doing that thing with his lips 😭 something always goes wrong when he performs at the tony's
As someone who grew up in that religion I have to say he did a great job embodying the grooming mentality and trained blind faith enthusiasm that accompanies it!
Even though I wasn't a part of the mormon faith, I do have religious trauma and such. And even I still felt the same way too be entirely honest. Not as intense as an ex mormon probably does of course. But I still get a little
@@BreCheese000 The musical has a reputation for being blasphemous and everything, but it doesn't touch on any of the controversies around the church (which I have never had any interaction with). Pretty sure there was a sex grooming scandal a while back, and recently three highly placed members of the church (they had received the second annointment, whatever that means) were found to have embezzled millions of dollars of church funds.
It's a great show! Kind of R-rated, and you have to be okay with laughing at some pretty questionable material, but it's hilarious. I saw it with Ben Platt as Elder Cunningham!
@@TheWiseGrif you caught me being ironically understated! Definitely not for young'ens and pearl clutchers! I'm very jealous that you got to see it so many times!
This is my all time favorite musical. I sadly have to wait for the touring productions to come to my city so I never got to see the original cast but I go every time it comes here and laugh just as hard every single time. Andrew Rannells is amazing. He was just as great in Falsettos a few years back.
I'm curious if anyone thinks that the really closed eee sound is a stylistic choice. Just going by how they pronounce Mormon earlier. Going for a nasally nerdy sound.
Thank you! I appreciate watching you talk about different technical aspects of performing this song☺️♥️! Andy Rannells is quite a powerhouse singing this song. I feel like I would run out of breath trying to sing it😅.Mad respect for him though 😎
you should also check out his performance at the tony awards with Falsettos company. ( and I just realized that it says "Rankles" instead of "Rannells" hahaha it's so funny because always misspell or mispronounce his last name)
Could the tension in singing "believe" be on purpose because Andrew is singing in character? (Idk if that's even the right thing to call it). Also the song Man Up has quite a bit of moving around while singing. Very fun (and tiring) to watch.
i mean that maybe the way he is creating the character voice happens to result in the tension. not that he's deliberately tensing up in order to create the sound. i hope that makes sense...
That dog giving me facts throughout the video nearly gave me an aneurysm. Learning that Andrew Rankles has an underbite made me so happy and I felt so seen as someone who also has an underbite. Knowing that I can still sing with this bodily malfunction made me SOOOOOO HAPPY!!!!! I Am Mormon.
Some years ago, 3 or 4, I went and saw them live at Shea's Theatre in Buffalo, NY and it was one of the greatest entertainment experiences of my life lol.
You should add the musical Beetlejuice to your reaction list. Would love to see your reaction to the singing voice of the lead. He adds a scruff to his voice like Michael Keaton did in the film.
@@SongsFromASuitcase I will check that out!! Here's a medley they performed at the Tony Awards a couple years ago. About the best you can get besides illegal bootlegs. Alex Brightman does a pretty crazy voice for Beetlejuice. ua-cam.com/video/b2jgBRDPWOA/v-deo.html
From the movie? I plan on reserving that when the whole thing is streaming so you might want to watch out for it :) Otherwise, there are other In The Heights videos I've reviewed before, go check them out!
I wonder if the producers weren't thinking when they made the cast album because they had him say the President's name just like they did here, which is a risk when making an album because the LDS president changes every so often (they are the oldest member of the :LDS church)
I'd love for you to react to Wagon on Fire from Trail to Oregon, the Starkid Musical. It has some good projection and feeling in it. Plus it's one of my favorite songs from Starkid
I remember listening to the album when it first came out and I thought it wasn't very funny. Than I saw it staged and laughed the whole time. Same thing happened with Pirates of Penzance. The visual humor in these kinds of shows is so underappreciated.
Hello Songs From A Suitcase! Thank you for the great channel. I'm a new subscriber. I couldn't see how to send you a reaction request in the community section, so I'll post it here hoping you will see it. I would love for you to do a reaction or two of Luis Miguel. I am not a very good singer, and I don't speak Spanish, but when I listen to Luis Miguel my soul stirs and I want to sing out and speak fluent Spanish. I would suggest UA-cam videos: "Luis Miguel - No Sé Tú (video official)" or "Luis Miguel - Medley Romance (Vivo) 4/6". Thanks for the wonderful analysis. It really helps me as a non-singer increase my level of appreciation for vocalists. Thank you.
Oh. Here's the link. From time to time, most likely on Fridays when there are new releases, I usually ask you guys if there's something you want me to check out: ua-cam.com/users/SongsFromASuitcasecommunity
Great reaction !!! I have a proposal for myself - will you make a film about a talented young singer Viki Gabor? She has an amazing voice !!! She can sing a lot of riffs and run and also whistle like her idol Ariana Grande :) I would be very interested in your movie about her. Viki has great potential to become a star all over the world. She is only 13 years old. In 2019, she won the Children's Eurovision Song Contest. 6:55 Andrew said that his mouth was incredibly dry from anxiety during this performance and that's why he kept doing that thing with his lips 😭 something always goes wrong when he performs at the tony's
I felt it kind of added something to his character too. Like, Elder Price is really excited and nervous
Andrew Rannells is an icon. This and Falsettos are two of my favourite musicals because of him.
🥰🥰
I think the tension on the E vowel adds so much to this character and i wouldn’t want it any other way
Agreed, clearly a character choice
As someone who grew up in that religion I have to say he did a great job embodying the grooming mentality and trained blind faith enthusiasm that accompanies it!
This is a great point that I wouldn't have been able to identify thank U
yep, I was going to say the same thing! This is my first time seeing these songs because I left a little over a year ago.
Another exmormon yay

The opening number of the Tony’s that year also started with the Book of Mormon cast. Hysterical. Also, really wonderful harmonies.
Ooh! I'll look it up.
Andrew Rannells. He played King George when Groff was off doing the Looking movie and was a replacement Hedgwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch
I see! I might go check out his versions of the king's songs some time :)

This was a cute way of trying to tell her that she spelled his name wrong in the video. Didn’t seem to work though…
