- Rich Keam, winner of 'Best Jobs in the World' is Taste Master Western Australia (tastewesternaus.... Rich meets up with Doc Reynolds, a Senior Aboriginal Cultural Custodian to discover the culinary traditions of Doc's "saltwater people".
They meet at Lucky Bay (near Esperance) and Doc's family business, The Lucky Bean Cafe. With a view along some of the whitest sand in Australia, turquoise ocean and the famed kangaroos that drink from freshwater pools, this is a coffee stop that few forget.
From this most modern of ventures, Doc demonstrates the foraging that has been passed through generations of his people. Foraging for bush herbs, Rich tastes Bush Grapes and Native Coastal Rosemary. Then Doc teaches Rich the traditional art of stripping layers of paper bark to act as a kind of 'bush aluminium foil'. High in water content, the paper bark is perfect for cooking meat or fish over an open fire as it doesn't burn and helps the meat remain moist. The collecting of the paper bark must be done with care and attention so as to not destroy or damage the tree. It is a technique which takes from the land sustainably, only taking what is needed. As the sun sets, Doc cooks uses the paper bark to cook some freshly caught river bream (local fish) on the Wylie Bay Sand Dunes. He reflects on the personal importance of keeping Aboriginal culture and traditions alive for future generations.
Rich Keam is originally from Brighton, UK. He was one of 1000s of entrants to Tourism Australia's Best Jobs in the World campaign. He arrived in Perth in August 2013 to take up his prize job as Taste Master of Western Australia. Eating and drinking his way around the state... Hard job right? Doc Reynolds is a senior Aboriginal Cultural Custodian, an expert in the coastal land around Esperance. He runs Lucky Bean Cafe with his family ( luckybeancafe ) and also offers bespoke cultural and educational tours of the region ( www.kepakurl.com.au ).
Esperance is a gateway to the stunning Southern Ocean coast and national parks of the region. Located 720KM from Perth, 481KM from Albany, 391KM from Kalgoorlie and 203KM from Norseman it is easily accessible by daily flights from Perth or by road. It is up to you how adventurous you make your journey. There are plenty of scenic drives and campsites that are accessible via road, however if you want to get off the beaten track and access the more remote areas and isolated beaches there is plenty of beach driving on offer. Fishing, bird watching, hiking, swimming and surfing are just a few of the activities on offer in this region. Tours are also available.
Thanks for sharing.
