But i think what many of these video miss is the fact that there arent just rivalaries, there are also club/fan friendships.
My hometown club has a friendship with a team that plays 2 leagues above, but we have friendlies every season (which we get battered in) where people just mix together on the main stands (while the ultras stand together to coordinate the athmosphere properly). Its a fcking blast.

In Portsmouth they have a giant structure built on the quay called the spiniker tower. It got sponsored by some company and they wanted to paint it red, which is the colours of their derby rivals Southampton. The sponsor was forced by the entire city to paint it blue, as the city wouldn’t allow Southampton’s colours be painted in their city. Just an example of how Football really influences everything in Europe.

COPA90 Stories channel (where this video is from) is a real interesting Channel. One of the more fascinating stories on the channel is how the Ultras for the Three Big Football Clubs in Istanbul, Turkey (Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas) who are normally pretty heated rivals on any given day came together to protect people protesting the Turkish Government's plans to make changes to an important landmark in central Istanbul. The protesters were getting tear gassed and attacked by the police, so the Ultras came together and protected the protestors because they were used to being tear gassed and attacked by cops on Derby days between the clubs.
Also, Adam Richman (the original Man vs. Food guy) has a series of videos called "Matchday Menu Diaries" where he goes to various cities and tries the local food and the goes see the team's match.
[EDIT] Oh, and there is a video about the Columbus Crew fighting to save their team on the channel. It has a cameo of sorts from Art Modell, because Modell's moving the Browns from Cleveland to Baltimore caused something which impacted the final outcome of the story...

My team, Glasgow Rangers, just made a European Trophy final. They have used the support to punch above our weight, home and away, all over Europe. The cup final tickets for the final in Sevilla, Spain, instantly began going for thousands of pounds, pricing out the fans the team had relied on. The atmosphere in the final when most needed was poor and we lost the game. Football is ALL about money here too, for fans it's becoming worse and worse. Ultras are needed to remind the owners and expensive players just who's club it is. WATP UB07 🐻

Ultras exists on the premis, that their club is THEIR club. Football teams are based in the city/town/village where they reside. And has been since the clubs infancy. The club is a part of the community. And it is engrained in the hearts of the citizens that it belongs to them. Thats why ultras can exist as a concept. Although the different sports clubs all are professional and has to make a living out of it … the support from the fans are essential to any club. Its not so much the mighty buck that runs the show for the ultras. Thats where the passion comes in.
Never forget … sports matches are the modern world equivalent to ancient times war rivalry with the kingdom next door. So it becomes a matter of “us vs them”. This is clan rivalry in our time.

Ultras are not only die hard fans of the club, they tend to be extremely patriotic and invested in local community. Although in more dictatorship like countries they are often manipulated and used by the people in power and get involved in organized crime. But still they often try to fix what government fails to do on local community level. Let's put it in American terms, it's like Crips and Bloods would not spend all of their time pushing dope, throwing their neighborhoods into a shithole and killing each other, but instead trying to help out the community.
Few examples from my city, Belgrade, Serbia:
    - Maybe 20 years back in one neighborhood of my city a serial rapist started attacking girls at night. And the streets in my country are actually safe to walk after sundown so you can imagine the impact of this for the local community. Police was ineffective so local ultras literally created a lockdown, they held some sort of neighborhood watch for over 2 weeks. And they managed to get the guy, who needed serious medical attention by trauma surgeons before he could see the judge. Police literally had to save him from ultras.
    - Every year at holiday season they have a fundraising, buy toys and clothes and take them to children in orphanages. It's probably weird for the kids to have a 7 ft 250 pounds tattooed Santa giving out presents, but hey, as long as the kids are having some good things in their life...
    - They collected money and refurbished 4 playgrounds and 1 basketball/football court in my neighborhood which were devastated by junkies and left to rot by the local authorities. They painted them and tagged them with club colors and murals so no one dares to damage those swing sets and slides anymore. Not to mention they did it for like 10 times less money than what the city would spend and there are no junkie gatherings there anymore
    - They refurbish the facades of old buildings that the authorities ignore. They do paint their murals and insignia, but it looks better than gray walls and plaster falling off of them
    - Police actually has to patrol less because there are always some ultras sitting on a bench, drinking beer and watching over the hood. Especially in the summer. So cops are happy as well
So from the local neighborhood perspective ultras are actually a quite good thing to have. If they didn't get involved in crime they would be a pride of the community.
BTW, ultras were the key players in bringing down Serbian dictator Slobodan Milošević back in 2000. They were on the front line, clashing with the police, swallowing tear gas and enabled protestors to push forward.

actually the clubs dont suport this things and they usualy release announcements where they say that, the clubs want to sell tickets, so they need to give the other fans security too. but, also they dont want to lose those fans bc not all are bad and its part of the game and also ultras work like "hype mans", puting all in the stadium chanting and jumping and so on, a flair dont do nothing bad by itself, you need a bad person to do bad things. in fact in a lot of countries as in here in Portugal, some ultras need to go to the police station during the game, they cant get even close to a stadium in a game day. there are around 200 persons in Portugal with that condition.

BBC Panorama 2017: Hillsborough Disaster. How They Buried the Truth. you should really look into the Hillsborough disaster in the uk and what happened as a result to understand how the authorities got control of hooligan culture by blaming the fans for situations that the police shouldnt have let happen (or even created and lied about in court) to justify stricter laws. our stadiums are now much more family friendly environments now but there is always one main stand for the home teams 'ultra' type supporters, its creates the atmosphere and allows them to be easier controlled if needed!

You basically get these thing when it is linked with peoples identity. Similar to religion and all that.
So yes, European teams and college football are a very apt comparison.
And it's also why "franchises" wil never get these to the same extend.
I support some esport franchises but at the end of the day there is no emotional attachment compared to my local club. When they won the league back in 2015-2016 you had basically everyone from the region celebrate. Even non-football fans.
My mother cares little for football.
She will always support our national team.
    Franchises can't compete with that.
