A Peacock Taking a dirt bath

  • Many birds especially with dense feathers take mud bath from time to time. This is to get rid of many bacteria in the feathers and maintain the plumage hygiene. You may not have seen the peacock squatting on the ground like this. But it is doing the mud bath ritual. Shot this video in the forest near my home.

    Interesting really I have not observed this phenomenon natural question arise in mind how after taking mud bath this huge bird will be able to fly.....interesting to observe..thanks Ranjit

    Galliforms take dirt baths, not mud baths. Mud would cake their feathers and make them vulnerable to predators. Dirt baths, however, rid them of parasites such as ticks, lice, etc.
