    You would have done better at the jetty, but I guess exploring new places and knowing the fishing conditions are also good experiences. As for me, I enjoy the adrenaline rush of landing the fish and finding out what surface from the depths. If I was fishing via bait and wait, I would have brought more than one rod.... hehe. Thanks for sharing.

      Yeah haha, I went to explore as the tide was dropping way down, usually I prefer to fish as the tide is rising, probably why the bite was so slow. I just like to catch fish regardless of their size, but I have also yet to land a monster of a catch so I still need to experience that :D I also used to bring extra rods when I bait and wait but I don’t mind just using one, it’s less to manage and I spend my spare time looking at all the cool stuff around me :D thanks for watching! 👌🎣

      Glad you enjoyed the video John :D This one is one of my older videos so it’s not as polished but I enjoyed taking the time to talk about a not so talked about topic, which is the conservation of these continuously shrinking wetlands and salt marshes. They provide so many benefits for so many fish we like to catch along the coast, we would all like to catch awesome fish like the California Halibut but to do so, we need to be on top of maintaining their habitats for future generations. Small fun fact, while I was volunteering at the Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy, I actually wrote a grant to help them acquire one of the nearby salt marshes that belonged to (I think?) the city. Whether or not they used my grant proposal I’m not 100% sure (it been a while since I volunteered there), but since then they have gotten ownership of the land and have been implementing projects to help restore the ecosystem there c:

      @@SvenGoesFishing That's great to hear. Your involvement in trying to preserve the wetlands is a blessing to not only the animals that thrive in this their natural environment, but also those of us who enjoy this fantastic sport of fishing. Many thanks.

      Ofc John, there’s only so much one Sven can do, but collectively we can all make a huge difference one small step at a time :D I actually found the binder they gave me while I was writing the grant proposal, mainly a bunch of info, statistics, and possible issues that need to be fixed but I’m glad they’re able to address it now c:

    So I went to the Newport jetty and I try a high low rig with shrimp and I Either catch small perch and small bass or nothing should I switch up my size hook and try a different van or should I do more exploration on the jetty instead of sticking to one spot any tips bro

    • @SvenGoesFishing
      @SvenGoesFishing  3 роки тому +8

      You can change your hook size to larger sizes if you're going for larger fish. You'll be able to put bigger pieces of bait to entice bigger fish + only bigger fish can go for it c: I also recommend exploring around a bit, some spots could have no fish, and then 10 feet further down the jetty there's a whole school. Different baits will also attract different fishy friends, I like shrimp because a lot of surfperch like it haha, but you can try different ones for the species you want to target. I hear people like to shark fish with big chunks of mackerel :o As long as you match your rigs to what you're looking to catch, you should be good to go 👌🎣 let minnow if you have any more questions :D

      Where is that spot at if we could know

    • @SvenGoesFishing
      @SvenGoesFishing  2 роки тому +2

      This spot is at Newport Back Bay, there’s a good bit of regulations so I recommend double checking before you head over to fish. While I don’t actively try to hide where I’m fishing, I refrain from spot burning for local anglers and to prevent overcrowding from leading people directly there. With that said, there’s only a few areas where you can fish here without crossing into restricted territory and this spot is not exclusively hidden away so you are more than welcome to try to find it using scenery elements in the video :D

    • @SvenGoesFishing

      Hi Reed, you actually can fish Upper Newport Bay :D, there are just a few spots where you can't traverse due to sensitive wetlands (Human activity such as foot traffic could damage them :o). Generally here, spots that allow recreational activity you can fish, just be mindful if you're wandering around looking for a spot.
      newportbay.org/the-bay/rules-reg/
      ^ here's a site with resources regarding fishing/ recreational activities + maps of where it is okay to do such activities.
      Hope this helps, I'll also update my description to include this information, if you have any other thoughts, comments, or concerns, feel free to ask and I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability c: 👌🎣

    • @stevepd1
      @stevepd1 3 роки тому +5

      Check the MPA website. You CAN fish there recreationally for fin fish using hook and line. Sven is right about staying on established trails. Best luck.

    • @SvenGoesFishing
      @SvenGoesFishing  3 роки тому +7

      Thanks for verifying Steve c: back in college, I used to have a few field trips out into the Upper Newport Bay, they always super stressed the importance of making sure not to deviate from the trails. What could just look like simple sand and mud could be a thriving ecosystem of super tiny microbes doing their best, so it’s always good to make sure we don’t cause more damage when we get there and as we leave 👌

      That’s so cool! I don’t even think I’ve seen a Steelhead Smolt in person yet haha. I’ve heard that too, fishing used to be way better back in the day, now it’s a little bit more harder to catch things but as long as there’s fish to catch, that’s good enough for me regardless of how dinky they are. Glad to hear from a fellow veteran Angler, especially a long line of family veteran Anglers, love the stories I run across like this one c: I like to do my part to help preserve as much fishing as I can, for our current generation and hopefully, my kids one day in the future :D Thanks for caring as well Eric, we need more people to learn that fishing is only as good as the people who do it responsibly 👌🎣 have a blessed day brother 👍
