  • I've thought it would be fun to drive around the county with a van full of tech and go to different people's houses and install crazy cool stuff. I might be the only person who thinks that would be fun. Until that dream comes true I will have to be content to just go help a friend or two with their projects. This time I brought a camera man along to help my buddy Matt install Hyperion Bias Lighting. Hope it's useful and maybe a little funny.

    Hey doc, on the corner connectors there are little plastic guide pieces on the side to make sure it sits under the tabs. If you concentrate on getting it under those guides everything just kinda slides into place.

      Yes there is no issue connecting the ground of DC PSU. In lab situations when you have many power supplies that is exactly what you do.

    • @cyberdave17

      @@DrZzs without a common ground, the 3V3 volt signal from the pi could be floating above the 5V of the led strip and cause reliability issues or damage to the LEDs. If it works it works, but it's not ideal. Same goes if you use the level shifter, gnds should still be connected.

    ey Dr. Great video and you've convinced me that this is something I can get done myself rather the the Philips HUE route. Question about your parts list - What is the RpiZeroW on the list for? Is this an alternate to the Rpi3? Or are both needed? Also you have mentioned that the a WLED controller could be used to move the Rpi3 further from the TV and use wifi to send the control signals to the WLED on a TV? Is that correct? That would result in less crap behind the TV is it is? Thanks in advance. Looking forward to ordering the parts.

    Hi Dr, Thanks for your very clear video.
    Only one thing is not clear to me. What do you connect to the input of the capture card and more inportant Why??
    I would say that you just plugin a HDMI cable from your Mediabox or Apple TV to the capture card directly.
    Thanks again

    Do not pry up the metal tabs in those corner connectors too much... I did and it only took a little bit of spacing that caused the connector to be a less reliably to keep contact.
    It helps alot to have both of the connector's tabs open so the metal contacts are a little lose to get the strips underneath.

    Great video. You've got me inspired to do this at home. DrZzs or anyone here, would there be an advantage using SK6812 LEDs to get a dedicated white channel (they come in 3 styles cool, warm or neutral - I'd probably go neutral with a TV)? And is there an advantage to getting higher pixel density ie 30 vs 60 pixels/m? Thanks

    Does your hdmi pass through reduce your quality? Wonder if it's rated for 4k and anything over 60fps

    Hi, I actually have the same setup as you in the video. However, my problem is with powering the capture card. I plugged it into the Raspberry Pie but it wont work. However providing it with a separate power supply it works. Any idea ?

    Hi everyone. I actually fid exactly like this, and it worked from the first try. The only thing that is bothering me is that wenn my capture card doesn't detect any signal (Google TV Stick) then the LEDs should go out, but they aren't. They are constantly on and Displaying full white colour.
    Does anyone know what could be the Problem?
    I would appreciate your help
    Thanks in advance 🙏

    Don't need to do all that plug the firestick in to a different hdmi without the splitter and use hyperion grabber apk on the firestick and in the app use the ip address on the pi! Done and use the hdmi with the splitter for xbox or ps4!

    How could you capture the signal if everything was played from the smart tv? Netflix, Plex, Amazon etc... Is loaded through apps on the smart tv and not an external device.

      This setup needs an external source like Firestick or even better a Nvidia Shield TV

    i wonder if putting the LEDS at a 45 degree angle would improve the effect by letting more light out the back of the TV.

    • @jon9947
      @jon9947 3 роки тому

      Or flip them 90 degrees, 3d print some quick brackets, and you wouldnt have to cut/splice them back together and get some extra light.

    • @DrZzs
      @DrZzs  3 роки тому

      maybe. I've notices the effect isn't as good if the TV is far from the wall.

    I have a question and possible solution to the 4K dilemma most people have with this setup, could you use an HDMI splitter with one input and two outputs that output the same video at the same time and have one go into your tv and one going into the capture card? That way the capture card is still receiving the video data and the tv would still get full quality, there would just be no output cable from the capture card to the tv, it would go from the splitter to the tv, would this work?

    • @ConnerHall
      @ConnerHall 3 роки тому

      I'm currently making a DIY Plex voice integrated "smart screen" Aperture Radio alarm clock. I'm using this exact method to output 1080p, but the idea should work just as well with 4k. It's pretty hard finding a 4k splitter to fit into the form factor, but doable. If anyone would be interested in a tutorial, let me know and I'll speed up production.

      I actually came across this splitter that outputs 4K 60hz hdr also can do individual downscaling and is about the size of a zippo

    I don't understand why you start at the left upper corner?? you can start any place you like, mostly down in the middle near the RPi is the best place... Furthermore it's a pity that the hyperion effect is not working on the tv-app's or you have to use a chromecast (with hdmi splitter).
