I always wear a cheap Timex on my cruise with time from where I’m from on it bc your cell will automatically change.
Make sure you know what time the ship leaves the port bc they will leave you! Seasoned cruisers get on the pool deck to watch ppl running for the ship, then later as boats bring them to the cruise ship.
Never go on a cruise without travel insurance & a passport. If you get injured off the ship in another country, the hospital won’t treat you & if you need transportation to get back to the ship, you’ll need a passport.
Take ibuprofen, Benadryl, alka-seltzer, Tums, Emetrol for nausea, & if you have medical issues that could possibly flare up, take supplements that could help in the middle of the night. You won’t have to spend your vacation hunting for this stuff off ship or pay double for it on the ship.
Make copies of your cruise paperwork, passport, & important paperwork etc… to have with you off ship, then keep the originals in your safe in your room. Put a bright sticky note on the safe so when your cruise is over, you won’t leave stuff inside.

I work for an airline, and I can't tell you how many times I hear the words "what do you mean my flight is canceled/delayed? My cruise is today!" My first cruise is in November. Believe I'm flying in the day before. Airline employee standby flights for a cruise are also a no-go.

If we are flying in winter from Canada (or Northern USA) we plan to fly in 2 days before departure- not 1 day. A winter storm can easily impair flights for more than a day and we want that extra margin of safety. We budget accordingly.

I speak as someone who had to find my husband's case in the luggage room in the middle of the night because he accidentally packed the trousers he was going to wear going home. Luckily it was a small ship. On another cruise he was called back to portside because he had packed a folding penknife because I was always leaving string labels on my clothes. They did let him keep it. We have done one fly cruise where we flew in the same morning. It all went fine but I would not do it again.

True experiences: My parents missed their cruise because the airplane getting them to the the embarkation spaces was cancelled because of fog, making it impossible for the plane to take off.
I became seasicksick on the third day of using the patch on a 7 day cruise. I did not cover my land legs for several weeks after the cruise ended. Some people are just more sensitive to motion sickness than others. I think I was the only person seasick on that cruise.

Closed loop cruises are cruises that leave and return to the SAME PORT. If a cruise leaves Seattle (stops in Vancouver) and ends in Anchorage or leaves Boston (stops in Bermuda or a Caribbean island) and ends in Ft. Lauderdale, you need a passport.

If you cruise from L.A. or San Francisco to Hawaii and back, you will need a passport. The ship will stop in Ensenada, MX. If a cruise leaving a U.S. port doesn't stop at a foreign port, it needs a U.S. crew.

    • @sarahthompson5518

That's a good question. Maybe you can determine the answer by looking at your flights to the departure port city. If your flight is a long one with one or more connections, then you should consider a larger buffer time before ship departure. Maybe the first flight of the day before or even two days before to be sure. If you are flying a nonstop from your airport directly to the departure city, then scheduling the earliest nonstop flight for the day before embarkation day should be good. And don't forget to factor in winter snow storms, or severe rain storms and wind events in your area or in connecting cities. I also like to add sufficient time so that the odds are in my favor for a successful departure.

  • @rgruenhaus

Make sure the cruise insurance covers enough that if your return home flight is missed by 5 minutes checking your bag that the insurance only pays $500 and the expense of a room till the next day and the new flight which with the airline that only has one flight a day as well as food cost for the night totals almost $600. Remember that you have to pay for the expenses and put in a claim to get it back maybe a month later!

They gave her some medication, quarantined her in our room for the rest of the cruise, and handed her a bill for $1457.00. Our private insurance refused to reimburse us since the illness happened at sea with a foreign doctor treating her.
Thankfully we had trip insurance. Not only did they reimburse the entire $1457.00 but they also reimbursed 1/7 of the cruise fare for the day that my wife was stuck in the cabin.

Not choosing the right cruise FOR YOU.
I may write a fabulously positive review about my perfect vacation. If you read between the lines you’ll realize that I said nothing about casinos, nightlife, comedians, or game shows - because I’m not really interested in those things - so if that’s what you want you should ignore my enthusiastic high rating. On the other hand, if (like me) you want a peaceful and quiet time with fabulous service on a small ship that’s easy to get around on, you may want to avoid the highly rated cruise that’s all about the party and high level activities. Also think carefully about the ages of your children. My grandkids loved DCL until they were about 14 or 15 but after that they hated it. (The adults in our group now love sailing DCL without the kids, because this is what is right FOR US.)
One size does not fit all.

Anyone who trips up on prohibited items is simply being a victim of their own stupidity. Some of the things covered in this video are just fatuous. One item that can be more complex than it appears is allowing the cruise line to schedule air travel. With us, this meant we would have to awake at oh-dark-thirty, drive an hour and a half to a sunrise flight, and have a layover to the cruise port….where we would be expected to board the ship prior to departure, all on the same day. And this was in the middle of January, and we live in the U.S. Midwest. Needless to say, we rescheduled our flight to the previous day- and were charged by the cruise line for doing so (and of course we had additional expenses of hotel, meals, and transport to the cruise port). As a final real injunction: because of what has already been said, as well as other reasons, buy the insurance package. Not cheap, but just do it.

What about your boyfriend bringing his concealed carry backpack as his carry on… and forgetting to make sure there was not a bullet in the bottom of the bag. Best part is, he made it through airport security 3 times & on/off the cruise ship 4 times before he found out about it…

Airport security is honestly a joke. They put us through all that, yet miss so much. I had this self defense sharpish heavy metal keychain thingy (bought from a self defense company..it was a legit weapon) in the bottom of my purse and completely forgot about it. Through security with flying colors on both departure and return. Didn't even realize it was in there until I was unpacking.

Without a weapon what was he going to do with it, throw it? They care about weapons, not a single bullet.

Taking a cruise is a bad vacation decision to begin with…
Too many rules, hidden costs and crowded spaces plus those barely functioning toilets

My next cruise we are leaving the ship one day early so we can just roll our luggage off the boat.

We had to wait 1.5 hours before the could find the correct gangway, ugh!! The other gangway had no way to roll off the luggage from Deck 5.

One thing to never do is make any sort of comment about jumping off the ship. A few years ago I was sailing the Caribbean and apparently a woman was either dropping off or picking their kid up from the onboard daycare (in port, in Aruba) and the kid was being fussy. The mother made a comment, something like “ugh! You make me want to jump off this ship!” Well, Carnival staff called an ambulance and had her and her group taken off the ship and she had to go to the hospital to be evaluated. Then they had to find their own way back home. So just don’t say things like that.

Cruising is supposed to be leisure with little nervous or anxiety. A slower relaxed speaking speed not in such rush to finish off may sound better to the audience. It also gives breathing space to reminisce the presenters gems of wisdom. Do you agree?

I almost never buy travel insurance and often arrive on the day of departure. I understand the risks of both and choose to take them. Each person has to do what they think best for them. But overall good info.

Exactly. I keep watching cruising videos in the hope I'll find something that actually appeals, but no. It looks like hell on earth to me, a keen independent traveller who prefers to avoid crowds at all costs. I think the smaller ships look more interesting, like 500 passengers or less. Especially the ships under sail where there is far less 'entertainment' and more options to stop at smaller ports that the floating gin palaces can't dock.

We also, wherever possible, take trains rather than fly (we're in Europe), less of a cattle truck experience. My husband at 6ft 7 finds flying painful and distressing.
