I remember you! You are so sweet and Thank you for making this video. I love seeing transformations of self love, and self acceptance like yours. Hair has a much bigger impact than we think and young girls around us see us as self representation so when we love and care for our hair with pride it exudes confidence to other girls like a domino effect.

You're so darn cute and your hair is gorgeous. I am an older, older lady that has colored (very light blonde) and straightened her hair for all of her life....UGH! Due to an adverse experience with chemicals in the dye...I am letting the white, gray, silver, whatever color is under there grow out and I am letting my hair do its curly thing. Today in church, these two ladies I do not know tapped me on the shoulder and said, "We think your hair is beautiful!" Wow, did that make me feel good. I will be checking some of your older videos to get some pointers. After all, you can teach an old dog (or gal) some new tricks. Sweet video...you are inspiration for the younger ladies.:)

I have a love story with my hair. My whole life I had people telling me I am ugly and I was always envious of my friends for that. As a teenager with a mother that hated me (including my hair), I used it mostly in ponitails and very well combed to appease her. My mother had kinky hair and hated it too as she wanted that straight hair too.
Then, one day I had to go to school and I lost my elastic band. My mother wouldn't allow me to stay at home. So I was punished by going to school with my curly hair. It turned out the best thing to happen to my self esteem.
My friends thought I had a perm and they wanted me to tell them what I did so they could do it too. I had to comb my dry hair (I know I know... no combing dry hair), put it in a ponytail so they could see me with my "natural hair", wet it again and wait for it to curl. I didn't use anything but coconut soap and oil at the time.
My friends couldn't uderstand how I used my beautiful curls straight. From that day on, I used it curly. It became my watermark.
I lived in the USA back in 2003, when natural hair wasn't a thing, and I had women ask me if my hair was natural or a wig. If I was in a bathroom line someone would always push my hair to see if it was true. Once a little girl with pin straight hair said she wanted hair like mine to her mom.

Seriously When you said "Straight hair was a dream for me" I almost started crying!! I tried so hard and fought my texture so hard my entire life and now just after my 26th birthday I am finally embracing the beautiful 3B I was blessed with!! I wanted to thank you, especially, as well as every curly advocate out there for getting me to see the light; to start my curly hair journey and truly love every step!!! I know this is an old video but This was really one that got me thinking about it, although I only played with my texture very occasionally at that time, it opened the door to now! Thank You so much for doing everything you do!!

So I know this video is a couple of years old, but I just started searching for curly hair tutorials and found some of your videos. THANK YOU for posting this video in particular!! I'm 39 years old, and I've spent my entire adult life straightening my hair every day because I've never had any idea how to style my natural curls My mom has stick straight hair and was never able to teach me how to style mine, and I've always hated the gelled-up disgusting frizzy mess that my hair has been when I've tried to wear it naturally, not knowing what to do. So, so much of what you said in this video is exactly what I feel, and seeing the photos of you as you were figuring things out gives me hope for the first time in my life that I might be able to have gorgeous curls someday, too!! Thank you SO much!!!

Thank you so much for your video. Your transformation is amazing! I definitely understand the NY tight ponytail because I also use to do that hairstyle back when I was in middle school to avoid dealing with my curly hair because I was the only one in my family with curly hair and I didn't know how to take care for it. Your video has inspired me to not give up because I am only 1 month within this journey and I have some straight pieces and some waves and if I am lucky a curl. Prior to this journey, I would occasionally straighten my hair and it got a little better (straightened max 3 times in 2016) but my hair has been stuck in between a wave and straight pieces for a year (was not on the curly girl method and never heard about it until a month ago when I started this journey) even my mom noticed how wavy my hair has gotten compared to how curly it was when I was younger. I'm so happy to see your video.

I haven’t used heat on my hair hardly at all, over the last 3 years! I had blonde, “medium” hair, it was so damaged that wearing it natural was too frizzy, so I ended up straightening it all the time, and then because it was damaged I had to cut it frequently. The last 3 years I dyed my hair back to my natural color, so that I could just let it grow, and I learned about the Curly Girl Method about 2 years ago, and for 2019 I’ve made the decision to LIVE BY the Curly Girl Method! And so far I can already feel like my hair is growing so fast, and my curls look better every day, the more I learn and the more I try out new things! I’m starting to feel my curls are my favorite attribute! Love watching these videos, I love learned that the people who’s curls I LOVE, also were in my shoes at one point! It’s so so encouraging! ❤️

I just found your channel, your curls are gorgeous! I have gone through the same process, brushing it out and having a wavy frizzy mess in high school, to straightening and keratin treatments! My main issue though was living in central America for 7 years - the hard water ruined my hair. I straightened it cause there was nothing else I could do. Now I've been a year back in the US and after clarifying shampoos, new growth, and shea moisture restorative conditioner and lots of Argan oil...finally have my curls back!

Your journey is incredible! I was the same way in that I had no idea how to take care of it. I straightened it quite a bit in high school and used non CG friendly shanooos and conditioners. I started my journey during my sophomore year and got some tips from a couple naturalistas on my floor in my dorm. Then I started really taking care of my curls and looking up products on Pinterest and straightening the hair way way less often. Like once every 4-6 months. I've officially been straightener free for 6 months and I'm not going back. I straightened it in April of this year for a length check, but I decided to stop because I don't like it straight anymore. It's boring lol. My hair currently has never been better! I found out about devacurl a year ago and I love them so much! I'm a gel freak!

I know this is an old video but I’m super happy I found someone who has experienced what I’m going through now. I’ve brushed my hair out since I was about 4 and I’m now 15. My hair basically in a ponytail my whole life. I knew I was born with curls but I thought that that was just a stage of being a baby. I have always still had that “wave” but I’ve now realised my hair is a natural curl. So I started the CG method this week and I’m finally starting my journey!!

I used to get terrible knots in my hair back in middle school. I did a relaxer treatment at a Dominican salon back when I was 13. Never again. I started doing Keratin treatments (once a year)...and honestly after that I never had any knots in my hair EVER again. So to me it was a life savor. So I'll never speak against it. My curls have loosened up over the years, and I'm finally learning how to style them to avoid the frizz. I don't wear my hair straight as much anymore. Curly is a part of me. Thank you to videos like yours. If only youtube was around back in the day haha

This is exactly the video i needed. I'm at the beginning of my curly hair journey and I'm doing research to see how i can go back to being curly and what i should do to my hair. my hair is obviously naturally curly but i've brushed it out since i was young. my mom had wavy hair so she didn't know how to do my hair and from a young age i hated my curls and thought they wee ugly and that straight hair was so beautiful. Now that i'm in college i want to figure out my look and i've realized i have no idea what to do with my hair and i never really have. now tht i live in a more humid place my curls are starting to return and now i realize that i love my curly hair and I want my hair to be curly like its supposed to be. it so encouraging to know that others have this experience too. Although i wish it wasn't so common that people with curly hair early on learn to dislike their own hair and have to go through so much to figure out how to maintain it. nonetheless, i am thankful for the internet and people like you who will help me along my curly hair journey.

It has been two years since I've started my curly hair journey & it has definitely been a struggle. Some days I feel really confident about my curls but then other days I just look at it like "ugh why can't I just have a full head of curls already" 😭 My hair is at this weird stage right now where the front part of my hair is way curlier then the back and I hate it sometimes but I just always remind myself of my journey and how I'm two years strong and I can't give up. Watching videos like yours always gives me confidence and motivation to keep being natural and to love my curls. For anyone that is going through their natural hair journey please don't give up. Once you see your curls start coming back it will give you the motivation you need so be patient, keep being strong and embrace your beauty and curls 💕💗

I'm on week 3 as a wavie! I've always felt my hair was stuck in an awkward in-between state, not straight, not curly or coily. Always with my hair up! Something clicked 3 weeks ago and I decided enough is enough, time to embrace and actually find out what my texture looks like. I am SO much wavier (even quite a few proper curls!) than I thought! I can't wait to see how it progresses... and I love that the best part is how good CG is for your hair. And I have to say, as a product formulator and junkie, delving into all the new products is way too much fun.

Currently in my hair journey, I'm going for length first! My hair about 3-4 years ago was up to my chin, and I bleached my BLACK hair to a like 8-9 level BLONDE about a year and a half ago, and I'm trying to undo the damage of that as well. With trims, it's getting healthier, but it's hard to convince myself to get it trimmed when I'm trying to grow it out to waist length. Currently I'm at the middle of my back, so I'm getting there! I am starting my journey now. My hair is very short. The back curls up nicely, 3A like yours. The sides, are very hard to get curl and even parts of it are almost completely straight. I get really discouraged. I just found your channel and this is only the second video I've watched. I am going to look, but if you have not done a video on exactly what you did to get your curls back (deep conditioning treatments, protein, no heat, etc.) I would apprectiate it. Also, I have quite a few grays, so I use henna to color my hair. But no harsh peroxide or drying products. Also, until I was 24, my hair was actually straight. I got a haircut one time, and my hair started to curl up. I am worried one day my curls will just go away. The back being as curly as it is, is encouraging. Thank you for your videos.

I've always tried to keep my curls as they are, but I didn't know how to style them, so now I'm doing my researches online and your videos are very good! The biggest difficulty is, I think, the fact that neither hairdressers know how to manage curls ☹️

I love sunkissalba too! I started watching her videos because of her hair and she’s also very inspirational. I’ve been straightening my hair since I was in middle school. From time to time I wish my curls were like yours but I always went back to applying heat 😒 .. it’s just so much easier to maintain. Now, I want to start my curly hair journey and I’m only ONE month in and I’m dying to straighten my hair... I hope I can make it, your curls are very inspiring!

I love this video. I know this is an older video, but I'm on my curly hair journey now. I gotta say it's pretty tough. I haven't fallen in love with hair yet. I don't know how curly my hair is because like you I did a lot of dying and strengthen it. I've always hated my frizzy wavy hair. Right now I have 2c wave, but maybe it's more curly than I think. Thanks for the video. 😊

I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL SO MUCH, I KINDA RELATE TO THIS BUT I ALREADY HAD THE JOURNEY QUI8TE FEW TIMES AND I ALWAYS END UP REGRETTING MY BAD CHOICES. BUT RECENTLY WHEN I JUST GAVE UP ON MY CURLS AND MY HAIR BECAME WAVY AND ALMOST WITHOUT A SHAPE IN MOST PARTS, I BLOWDRiED IT WITH A DIFFUSER WHICH IS EASIER TO AVOID THE HAIR MADNESS, MY HAIR WENT BACK TO CURLY BUT OF COURSE STILL NOT DEFINED AS IT WAS. I AM TALKING ABOUT 2 TO 3 YEARS NO CURLS.
FROM THAT MOMENT I WAS SUPER HAPPY BECAUSE I LOVE WARING MY CURLS AND NOW I AM ON THE DEEP CONDITIONING STEP AND CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS TO GET MORE DEFINITION.
YOUR VIDEOS ARE SO HELPFUL ESPECIALLY TO SOMEONE THAT FORGOT HOW TO DEAL WITH CURLS. PS: YOU ARE SUCH BEAUTY :*

Wow this video is so relatable, I've been through all of those "before" stages and I'm only 16 😂. I am currently in the process of starting my journey and your videos have helped me a lot. Your hair is literally goals and I'm motivated to get to that stage and have my curls looking like yours. I had to cut a majority of my hair in order to start fresh and I'm using DevaCurl as well. I started seeing a huge difference right when i started using the product, my hair is finally getting some shape. I'm excited to see the end results and have all the struggle pay off in the end.

I recently started my curly hair Journey 2 weeks ago. I have seen some improvement. I had literally straighten my hair almost every day since I was 20 and I am now a 35. I really miss my curly hair that I used to have growing up and in high school. I'm trying the curly girl method and I am seeing some improvement. Your video inspires me to continue working on my hair. My hair is still struggling with some frizz I'm hoping that will get better over time.

You know u were the youtuber, that inspired me to go natural, and I actually just started back in July, but am more serious about it now, I think the last time I straightened my hair was back in November. I can really relate to to u as a child and in middle school cause I was always getting things done to my hair or just dry brushing, then adding gel....while dry...😶 it was a mess, thank you soo much, you are such an inspiration😍. Now I'm in highschool knowing the does and don'ts of curly hair, and try to help other curly girls at my school with their hair😍😁😁

I remember until middle school having ultra frizzy hair as I would describe them I also had white hair so I was on a whole bunch of treatments and changing doctors and I remember hating my hair to the extent of shaving my head until last year when I just cut them very short like a pixie cut cause I hated them and I had 0 confidence before that but just as I had a pixie cut I could see my hair curl in a way I have never seen them before so beautiful so soft I was really grateful that day it made me realise my real hair type since then I've discovered so many things and have finally started to understand my hair and see that there were absolutely no problems with my hair but that it was just curly beautifully curly and also a big thanks to the people around me my family my friends everyone who just embraced my hair and also the ones who critisized it cause now I just feel so good about it all, I love my hair thank u

Just started my curly hair journey about 6 months ago. It feels like it’s been a lot longer but it truly hasn’t! I dyed my hair for about 10 years straight, bleaching, dying crazy colors, there’s times where I had my sides shaved, and then on top of it I’d straighten it all down. My hair was unhealthy, but I eventually just started dying it black. I had it black for about 2 years, and when I’d wash my hair my curls seemed better. My growth also was steady. Then I made the decision to bleach my box dyed black hair, to an orange and straighten it. When my hair wasn’t straightened my curls felt limp, super damaged, and my ends literally just started breaking off. I started dating my current boyfriend around the time I dyed it orange and he encouraged me to just go natural, which is what I wanted to do for a while but never really had the confidence because my hair has always been at a weird length and the curls just didn’t look good. So since then, I’ve stopped dying my hair completely, I’ve maybe straightened it once or twice, (it actually looks worse straightened now) and I’ve been trying to bring my curls back to life. So far so good! They haven’t been this curly in years. There’s still areas that I need to work on and I’m still trying to get past this awkward length that I’ve been at for years because of all the damage. I’m still trying out hairstyles that work with this hair other than putting it in a loose bun everyday. If anyone has any tips for styling I’d greatly appreciate it. I haven’t tried using a diffuser yet but I’ve been putting in deep conditioner for curls and it seems to help with all my frizz and makes the curls more separated/defined.

I am on week 3 of following CGM. I have blow dried and heat styled my hair forever and this summer decided to take a break. Shockingly, it seemed like my hair was curly/ wavy and I decided to look up online how to deal with it. Found the curly girl method and I am really trying it. Right now, I can't seem to manage the frizz and I really miss the shine that silicone products gave my hair, because there is no shine now. Been conditioning like it's going out of style, so I'm just hoping as my damaged tresses grow, my natural shine will pop back. Lol. Your hair is lovely!

You and your hair are beautiful!! 😍
Growing up my mom would do my hair but she has straight hair (shes native american) , so there's the start to my problem lol she also encouraged dyes in my later teen years. Its been the colors of the rainbow from ages 16-24. I had dye damage, heat damaged, dry, frizzy hair. I played sports my whole life so tight updos, and tight braids were a go to. I attempted to grow it out for a year, no dyes and no heat but i kept the same products. Which was my biggest mistake looking back now. I started the curly girl method in Feb. I've seen a huge difference in such a short amount of time! no dyes, no heat. Started using Devacurl decadence line (for max moisture), devacurl coconut style cream and ultra defining gel. Also using shea moisture streghthen, grow and restore leave-in and masque treatment. My new problem is that I'm soooooo impatient now. My hand just keeps reaching for the scissors or i can't wait my 3 days to give it some love lol thanks for sharing your journey, and for motivation! You and CurlyPenny are hair savers!! #NotAllHeroesWearCapes lol

I'm actually 62 years old and I have just started my curly journey...I'm actually in 3rd week. I've noticed that my hair has curled nicely. I don't use boxed hair colors, I've only used henna, but even with a plant-based henna you still have to be careful of over coloring your hair. I'm of Italian descent and my hair is a straight wave with curls so I'm a mixture of 2 a + 2C. (LOL I just started understanding that!) I lived in Bronx, NY, and like you, I strayed away from my curls and just blow dried my hair out because I thought curly hair would be too juvenile of a look for me. Because of watching your vids, I began to realize someone else had my kind of hair ...I began embracing my curls, but I found it very difficult to determine what's the best products to use. I knew what I couldn't use, I just couldn't figure out what I needed to use instead. It's kind of hard to figure out because many of the UA-camrs who have tutorials tend to try different products so it's hard to determine what's best for your hair. The one thing I had to keep in mind was no crap in my products; so I figured if I went organic I shouldn't go wrong! The other thing that I learned was that, not only did the products make a big difference, but also the order that you place them in your hair. But I was getting really, really discouraged because, even though I never used boxed color in my hair, I did use a flat iron for a little bit. I still wasn't all that happy with my hair because it was too flat and kind of boring! I'm very glad that I didn't use a flat iron too long, otherwise my curly journey would have been a lot longer. When I started watching your Channel, I realized that I could use mousse just on the crown of my hair near the scalp to give me the volume that I need. I've always stayed away from mousse because it was so drying. But you were using "Not Your Mother's Curl" products, so I tried their blue sea kale and coconut water mousse, and I love it! Their defining curl cream was a little drying to my hair so I opted for a different one; I'm using a defining milk instead. It's a lot gentler and I don't need a lot of water to give me the moisture that I need. For my styling gel I use "Biotera" which also defines very nicely but I also like the fact that it leaves a cast but it doesn't flake and it's silicone, alcohol, SLS, and all that other nasty stuff, free! And then of course I use a leave-in conditioner that you also tried from "Maui Curl Quench" (leave-in) which works very nicely because of the shea butter and coconut oil. I also utilize your suggestion that when I condition my hair I only do it half way to the ends of my hair. It's a great tip and it works nicely without weighing my hair down. You may be much younger than I am but I truly enjoy your videos because I think your struggles are very much like my own and therefore I can relate to yours, and when it comes to looking good and being confident and happy with yourself, age really is just a number! I'm very pleased with the way things have turned out so far. I'm still in the process of training My Curls which means that after I wash and condition, sometimes I use a bonnet and a hair dryer. The Bonnet dryer method for me is equivalent to a diffuser because it disperses the air throughout the bonnet without direct contact. Does a great job. I just wanted to say all this to thank you for the tips and the excellent tutorials that you deliver. I love especially that it comes from your heart. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more videos from you. Sincerely, Cat

I love your videos! I came up on a buzzfeed video about curly girls getting devacuts about 2 months ago and began my journey then. I haven't dyed my hair in over a year, but was heat styling it until about a month and a half ago because my waves and curls don't start right at the top of my head and my hair was very short. Now it's been about a month without heat styling. I'm growing my hair to be like Christina caradona's cut. My hair is like yours, straight when wet, but dries 2c/3a when I scrunch, so you having similar hair gives me hope that my curls will get better and better

Protein treatments and religiously deep conditioning and PATIENCE. I started last May and I probably have another six months before all of the damage is grown out. I went from 2A to 3A/B in that time, but I have different hair types allover my head now when it didn't used to be like that.
I did three semi chops. They weren't big chops, but I wish I had just big chopped in the first place. This last hair cut really made the biggest difference.
My biggest advice is to have fun with it. Enjoy trying new products and product combos and WRITE THEM DOWN. Try to really enjoy the journey. You WILL reach your destination, so relax and enjoy the ride!
PS: Thank you so much for the videos. Your hair is super similar to mine, so I learned a lot with your suggestions. :)

I ran into your Videos last night as I searched " how to brush curly hair" at 2 am. Sadly I never developed curly girl care discipline/habits and now at 29 finally decided to research it and embrace it more. I've had many hair dye processes, Brazilian blow outs and keratin treatments. Additionally I went about eight years of getting sewed in hair extensions. I would braid most of my hair and get straight blondish human hair sewed in. I would straighten my hair daily to blend my hair to the extensions. All this was crazy expensive and my hair started falling off and I developed what looked like a scalp rash that eventually made it scary to continue neglecting my scalp.
About a year ago I decided to give up the fight with my hair. I didn't feel pressure to straighten it and stopped dying it. I have cut off most of the hair I have dyed in the past. For some reason since all my family is straight haired (except my mom) I felt like that was the way my hair should be since I'm Latina. Plus I was teased about my curly hair and my Mexican cousins called me black (which now I'm like that wouldn't be bad at all). Anyway, I met my boyfriend and he is just so supportive and not superficial at all and I feel confidence to just begin styling my hair with coconut oil while wet. It looks okay but not as voluminous or as defined as yours.
Bolton line is, I'm so inspired and excited to begin using curly hair products and embracing my curly hair. You're an inspiration and know that I understand how you felt about Alba after I watched your journey. Better finding the curly world later than never. I know my partner and I consider having kids and his mother has the longest curliest hair. I want to be able to teach my kids how to care for their beautiful curly hair and not let society make them feel ashamed of their locks as I once was. I definitely felt the anti Afro sentiment from people and ridiculously felt shame. I can't believe I went through all the trouble for acceptance or to fit in.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

I've just gone through my curly hair journey. Although my hair still continues to improve everyday, the state that its at now beats having perfect straight hair any day. I used to be so frustrated with my hair because I didn't know how to manage it, and it always looked crazy. Idk where I would be without youtube 😅 its been about a year since I started my journey. And let me tell you. My hair looked so bad at first 😂 my hair looked stringy, frizzy, and weird. But it was so worth it. I've straightened my hair one time since starting my journey and when I did i hated it. It didn't feel like me anymore to have straight hair. I just learned to love my hair for what it is and how it wants to be.

I’m going through a healthy hair journey now. I straightened my hair for 15 years because I didn’t know what else to do with it. So in the summer last year, I decided to get my hair back to health. The worst part though, for me , is having to cut my hair to get the dead ends off. My hair is not as long as it is in my profile anymore. But it’s definitely much healthier and more defined. Your video really inspired mean and is pushing me to continue. Being patient is so hard but the long term effects are worth it. I’m almost there but I know I still have a little ways to go.
