Oh my you nailed it. I’m a Filipino living in US. My first job here I noticed people just eating by themselves in their desk. Also us Filipinos when we are eating & a friend comes by the first thing you say is “ want to have some”. You can’t just go on munching without asking. In the Philippine offices we have coffee time one in the morning around 10am & one at 3pm. Usually we gather in someone’s desk & chit chat or we go to the cafeteria in groups....at least during my time there. Also you are right, there is always a place to go to eat & hangout any time of the day or night & you feel like you are always surrounded by people. In the US when we go on long drives seldom do you see people hanging out outside their houses. In fact it became a game for our family during road trips....we would say oh look there’s someone out there. I was in the Philippines from Feb 3 to Mar 7 (almost got locked down there) & loved the feeling of being surrounded by friendly people all day long, going out to eat , travel to the islands , being pampered in the salon/spa, home massages & just be happy. I can’t wait for this virus to go away so my hubby & I can come back. Why go to the Caribbean, Hawaii & other island countries....helloooo the Philippines is the place to go. Some foreigners are afraid...the foreign media sometimes exaggerates the news. Well their loss....

I can relate. Arriving to the US years ago, I still prefer some Filipino ways. Yes, we still share food when we eat outside 😂. I miss Filipino time... here you need to be on time hence the road rage, hence the worry, hence the rudeness of people who live here. Everything is a rush and needs to get done on time... now now now... ohhh i miss the stress free laid back Philippines. Just lay back sit down and eat my cheap champorado 🤤😆

I don't think the rudeness of some people is due to time constraints.. Here in Europe people are very particular with being on time, hence they don't take time for granted..I had to adjust from being so used to Filipino time, where we take our time to just making time to be on time.

Drinking coffee at midnight culture started when PH became the "call center" capital of Asia. Since BPO or Business Process Outsourcing boomed, companies are catering to clients in the other side of the world which means they are working on a totally opposite timezone. So to keep themselves awake at night, there, coffee. :)

I chat with Filipino's online a lot and sometime find myself talking like them online. On my second trip there it was 30 C or more and the day after I came back to Canada it went to -30 C. Talk about temperature shock. Typhoons won't bother me much as I lived on the east coast of Canada for a few years and I mean right at the ocean and you have gale force winds in the winter with snow and freezing rain so I think I can handle a typhoon. I drove for a few days in Scotland and adapted to it fairly quick. Only got honked at one time lol. As a truck driver I see so many bad drivers every day and they would not like what I have to say to them haha. The east coast of Canada is a slower pace of life very similar to the Philippines so that part is ok. I can't wait to move to the Philippines as I know my life will be much better and as they say It Is More Fun In The Philippines.

I've always had this theory that one of the quickest way to adapt to the hot and humid weather in the Philippines is to change the chemistry of your body by changing your diet. A rice based diet is what helps people adapt better to the tropical heat. Because it gives you the needed energy to burn without the heavy protein build up that a pure meat and potatoes diet gives. Western high protein diet is good for packing in the muscles and fat to adapt to the cold winter climate, but here, all that fat and muscle would be just like wearing a heavy winter jacket in the desert, it makes you sweat and feel sluggish in the hot tropical climate. Once you've changed your diet and your body has adapted to the temperature, you'll find that you can tolerate the heat and sweat more and can appreciate putting on more clothes for the texture and their sweat absorbing properties. And if you still feel very hot, you can always have some cold refreshments to cool down or if the opposite, get something hot if you feel cold.

    • @longhairfen

@ObeyJay13 ah but those countries you mention have a fairly similar diet like the Philippines so they are also able to adapt to the tropical heat. I didn't say fat and muscled people per se have a hard time adapting, I said the high protein diet that produce dense muscle tissues and fats in the west makes it harder for pople to adapt to the tropical climate.

This is heartwarming guys. I especially liked when you mentioned the Filipinos’ resilience and how it’s rubbing off on you too. Some would misunderstand our “come what may, we’ll find a way” attitude. It’s not always a positive thing but I think it’s one of our endearing traits and I guess one of the things that we want our foreign friends to pick up on. Having been very used to natural disasters that we cannot stop but only do our best to prepare for, has instilled in our culture a certain psychological strength to battle the many hardships in life. And also your comment about the climate is very true. There have been studies linking weather to behaviours and seasons to personalities, so the idea’s not far-fetched. And for us Filipinos, it’s an advantage: we may not always like the heat, but the perennial sunny day contributes a lot to our “sunny” disposition in life. I’m glad you are enjoying your stay in the Philippines, even if you are limited to just being the city.

When I went to the Philippines few years ago, one of the things I noticed was the patience of the Filipinos when it comes to driving. Wow! I can't believe how patient they are. Here in the US. There's honking, swearing 🤬, and some other forms of showing anger or short temper. It's not a surprise why there's a road rage. So, driving can be very stressful here.

In addition, Filipinos believe that if it's God's will to die then die. In the south aside from earthquakes, typhoons and floods there are also wars and bombings. Filipinos have adjusted to all sorts of problems, even their neighbor's midnight karaoke, hence they just smile and don't easily back down in life.

    • @dcardigan13
      @dcardigan13 4 роки тому +11

That is not to say we won't make an effort to heal ourselves, of course. But the thought can balm our pain a little and it makes us less bitter about life and the fragility of life. Sometimes, we even think it's the good people that God claims first to save them from further suffering here on the mortal world/plane. Sometimes we think some people die in pain or had to suffer before they died as punishment for the grave sins they've done while they were alive. I can't explain it very well but I think having explanations to things we don't understand or sure about, no matter how superstitious or supernatural they are in nature, gives us a bit of comfort and keeps us from getting bitter and encourages us to think more about karma. Being conscious about karma encourages us to be more kind or at least, not intentionally bad.

I can relate to that I'm a Filipino living here in Southern California the stress level here is too high like everybody is in a rush, you cannot even have time to have a conversation with your neighbor, unlike in the Philippines whenever we go on vacation, upon arrival in Manila for some reason that stressed feelings suddenly disappear like turning off a switch.

The coffee shop at night culture can also be attributed to the number of business process outsourcing companies in the country. Most of them work on afternoon and night shifts (UK and US daytime) so many call center workers patronize this coffee shops to start their day. In Makati and BGC some coffee shops run 24 hrs like convenient stores.

@@petertullemans ever since the boom of the business process outsourcing industry in the Philippines, a lot of businesses grow with them as well. Not just coffee shops, in business districts, special economic zones and industrial parks which are the hubs of these BPO companies, a lot of shops and stores run for 24 hrs a day / 7 days a week. Restaurants and fast food operate round the clock. You'll even see bars and pubs full of people drinking at 7am to 12nn when many of these BPO workers end their shifts. Even SM Hypermarket and Department Stores in some malls open 24 hrs during December to give those who work on night shifts a chance to do their Christmas shopping.

I'm Filipino but my family moved to Canada when I was a child. Every time we go back to visit, it's always puzzling to me how people there could wear jeans in the extreme heat. I always pack my suitcase with light cotton and linen clothing to combat the extreme weather. I guess our bodies adapt to the climate wherever we live. Our winters here could reach negative 30-40 and I would trade Philippine's hot weather over winter any day!

I laughed on your #3 example. Maybe because some are shy to talk in English and sometimes saying "Yes" is a lot easier for them than to continue explaining in english. But I think you've noticed that after saying yes they will keep on making hand gestures trying to convey what they want to explain to you.

Using rice cooker is like driving an automatic (forgive the analogy). We usually cook rice "manually"... measuring with the first line on your finger, removing the lid when the water boils, then low heat when there's little water left and putting the lid back on. Then you wait until its cooked. But cooking large pots of rice for fiestas on wood fire is a whole different category. (They measure water using the lid of the pot)

I rarely make comments to vlog.
But i can't help not to say how you were able to live the Filipino ways.
You give positive feedback about life.
I really appreciate when you said you have been living better life away from your comfort zone that you were used to.
It makes me proud Filipino base on things you have been adopted to.
    More positive vibes...

I think drinking coffee in the evening has become a trade or a habit because of the Call Center Agents or the people working in BPO or ( Business Process Outsourcing ). Because they are working on a night shift so they need coffee to keep them going. Also i do appologize for the "Filipino time". Honestly, that is one of the attitude that should be corrected. Antonette -- A foreigner must understand that TIME has much to do with his CULTURE, HUNGER and SURVIVAL. Then the foreigner will understand why TIME is IMPORTANT to him, but UNIMPORTANT to the Filipino. If a Filipino plants rice one month late, his harvest is one month late. If a European or American plants wheat one month late, his crop is ruined and he starves. Furthermore, a Filipino can plant and harvest 2 crops of rice in a year -- his foreign counterpart can plant only ONE crop. This is why PUNCTUALITY is of prime importance to a foreigner -- but NOT to a Filipino. Of prime importance to a Filipino is friendship, understanding, patience and tolerance of personal differences.

Food sharing is fun, especially with friends, loved ones and family! You get to taste everything while socializing. To Filipinos, eating isn’t just an individual activity you do to refuel, it’s also a time to socialize. This is why in Filipino offices, everyone has lunch (or take yosi breaks) in groups. We have this thing called “boodle fight” where enormous amount of food is laid out on banana leaves and we just eat with friends or family members with our bare hands. To me, eating “naked” (by that I mean without utensils) is like making love to the food. Imagine licking that sauce off of your fingers! Haha. It taste so much better and natural. Of course, you need to sanitize your hands beforehand but yeah, it’s one of my favorite things about Filipino culture.
